A woman of integrity.

After reading her letter in full, I see no reference to gender issues, tho I have no objection to posters discussing them.

The letter itself comes across to me very personal and peeved in nature, and really doesn't say anything that isn't a concern for many of us in and out of the Party. She fails to acknowledge the achievements so far, including the ruling, which surely she backs which increases resources for rape and domestic violence victims.

I think she would have been better served working alongside other back benchers on matters she highlights such as the levels WFA and child benefit and indeed the debate now cross party on gifts.

Others should follow but not sure they will! Many are MPs for the first time … as time goes by maybe they will gain enough confidence to challenge the ‘inner circle’

Susieq62 Mon 30-Sept-24 13:48:47

Looking at her life and history I am not sure RD is a person to admire to be truthfully and brutally honest . Plus 3 months is a VERY short tenure. Glad she is not my MP because as one of her constituents I would be asking questions and making a lot of noise!

Excellent post @ 13.03 Rosie.

When it came to standing against the trans lobbyists RD wasn't simply expressing her ^personal strongly held views^Iam she was stating biological fact and standing up for the rights of natal women, something which too many in positions of power/authority/influence were afraid unwilling to do.

Rosie Duffield has the backbone that the PM should have. But he's too busy helping his Chancellor kick pensioners in the teeth and doing an inventory of all the glittery freebies from well-to-do sycophants.

Who will expect Sir Keir to run things for THEIR lucrative benefit in return.

It's plain enough - we have a PM who can, shamefully, be bought by the rich.

mae13 I agree with what you say except for the last line. I think it should be:

It's plain enough - we have a PM who can, shamelessly be bought by the rich.

Abdi Duale, a member of Labour’s ruling national executive committee, said it was “funny how people find their principles after winning five more years in parliament”.

JKRowling has come out for her

Iam64 Mon 30-Sept-24 13:10:06

I don’t disagree it all felt unedifying. I have to say though, I’ve worked alongside colleagues who needed to be at odds with managers and anyone who wouldn’t/couldnt/didn’t want to share every aspect of their personal strongly held views. Oppositional

Rosie51 Mon 30-Sept-24 13:03:48

Many of us share her views on trans activists and women only spaces. It’s now Labour policy but be fair Iam64 she was not supported in her views and came in for a lot of ill treatment. Told to stay away from conference because her views were controversial, Starmer said it was wrong of her to say that only women have a cervix. She received death threats and still Labour didn't speak up. Nadia Whittome even tweeted a good riddance tweet (which I think she has now deleted) but left up the one saying she should have been expelled by the party and not given the choice to resign the whip, because she doesn't share Rosie's beliefs. Starmer made clear his dislike of Rosie when he failed to invite her to his election launch in Kent. Kent's only elected MP and not welcome at the election launch! Could he have more publicly shown his dislike of her?

undines Mon 30-Sept-24 12:55:25

Yes, well done Rosie. I hope her constituents continue to support her

I am not a member of the Labour Party nor a Labour voter. I may have been asleep like Rumpelstiltskin but I knew little of Rosie Duffield before her resignation letter.
Strange thing to do it seems to me. She would have been just as much a woman of principle and integrity if she had resigned in one paragraph. In fact more so IMO. Exhibitionism comes to mind.

I agree winterwhite. I also see it as a pattern of behaviour. Her track record has been to speak loudly in her criticisms of the party she was elected to represent only 3 months ago.

knspol Mon 30-Sept-24 12:38:04

A person of principles in government, surely not!!!
Good for her. If only there were more like her in all parties.

Bazza Mon 30-Sept-24 12:33:48

Yes, well done Rosie. It’s what I would have expected of BJ so was somewhat disappointed in KS as I thought he would be above accepting gifts. It did cross my mind that if anyone had given BJ a suit they should give up tailoring as he never looked any better than a bag of rags.

sodapop Mon 30-Sept-24 12:30:37

This whole affair of gifts/bribes acceptable or not could have been avoided. Why is there not a blanket ban on MPs accepting anything whilst they are in office. I expect that is too simplistic. I worked in the public sector and we were not allowed to accept gifts from patients or relatives.

MayBee70 Mon 30-Sept-24 12:24:40

Better to have fought her corner as a member of the party imo.

Suzejp Mon 30-Sept-24 12:24:35

Good for her standing by her principles
Hope more follow her

I think if Keir is incompetent in any way it’s that he didn’t court Rupert Murdoch prior to the election and doesn’t have a good spin doctor.

nanna8 Mon 30-Sept-24 12:14:17

Didn’t take long, did it ?

Rosie for PM is what I say!

Very interesting article about Duffield from the area she represents - the people who actually know her as their MP. It was written in June 2024 so it’s not ‘sour grapes’ about her resignation.

Shines a different light on the ‘holier than though’ Ms Duffield!

Just read Rosie Duffield's resignation letter. Well said. That told him! Also just read your link LizzyDrip and as far as I'm concerned it only confirms her honesty. Criticising a person of principles with a moral compass is interesting LizzyDrip, no wonder you back that man.

I so admire RD, and I’m so disappointed with KS. It was all so exciting to contemplate having a change of government, who would do something about our public services, but it looks like he is not competent enough to be PM. Of course they totally mishandled the winter fuel payment cancellation whilst accepting freebies.

Did he mishandle the riots, too? What else has he proved to be incompetent with?

Anniebach Mon 30-Sept-24 11:45:13

Her constituents voted for a Labour MP. If she resigned and stood again as an independent that would be fair to her and the
constituents

Twig14 Mon 30-Sept-24 11:45:11

Very well done. Need more like her.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 30-Sept-24 11:41:19

I have only skimmed the full thread, so someone might already have said this; if so, I apologise.

Many people, me included, thought that a Labour government would be a very welcome change after 14 years of the appalling Tories. I am still glad that we have a Labour government, but very disappointed in the apparently frequent freebies, not to mention the threat of further austerity instead of some proper investment to grow the economy. Let alone the two-child cap and the WFP.

However - if RD is also disappointed in what has been happening so far, I think that she is right to resign the whip. Her constituents may well have voted for the LP manifesto, or to get rid of the Tories, or as a personal vote. If she is a believer in the previous values of the LP, including the manifesto, can't she still be representing her constituents as much as she did before? Therefore, no by-election required.
