Who is this Lord Waheed Alli who is a Labour donor?

I was curious so I looked him up (see pic).
He’s 59y and a British entrepreneur. At school his careers advisor suggested he become a bus conductor. He left school at 16y.

Emily Thornberry (who was by then a neighbour) introduced him to politics. Lord Alli is godfather to their child.

Tony Blair elevated him to the HoC in 1998 at a relatively young age of 34y becoming the youngest and the first openly gay peer in Parliament. He sits on the Labour benches in the House of Lords. The BBC summarised his appointment as "the antithesis of the stereotypical 'establishment' peer – young, Asian and from the world of media and entertainment".

I think many of us had already consulted Wikipedia.

I always think "who is this" suggests/means there are others?

Thank you, fgt2.

I just assumed politically aware posters were aware of who he is, how he got to be in the financial position he’s in.

I used “this” as a nod to all the notoriety in the media. Hence my curiosity. I read up on him, part Wiki, part other sources. Wiki didn’t mention the careers advice he was given at school, that was from an interview article.

Thank you

I must assume, then, that those of you who are thanking the OP for information many of us had already bothered to find for ourselves have been speaking from a position of ignorance when previously commenting on this bout of RW hysteria. 🤔

I don't know if careers advisers are any better these days, or if indeed they still exist, but in my day they were useless. This is a classic case in point it would seem.

22 years ago, my youngest son died at the age of 25 years old. A tragic death. He was very involved politically and Waheed Ali was very much a sort of Mentor for him. Lord Ali was so kind and friendly at that time to my family and myself and a couple of my daughters had tea with him on the terrace of the House of Lords. My memories of him are of very good.

Not like you to be so condescending MaizieD

All background information is welcome on N & P threads, not every poster knows everything about everything…

GrannyGravy13 Sun 29-Sept-24 09:16:11

MaizieD as for right wing hysteria, really!

Nothing can reach the dizzy heights of anti-Conservative rhetoric and hysteria which has been going on since the inception of GN.

PuddyCat Sun 29-Sept-24 09:31:56

Why so sneering and condescending MaizieD? Was there really any call for you to be so unpleasant? So what if OP informed you about something you were already aware of; plenty of others may not have been. Your superior knowledge and insight is overshadowed by your inherent need to belittle. It does neither you, nor the opportunity for open discourse, any favours.

I think commenting upon ‘donorgate’ was more about the largesse involved rather than the individual concerned - which is why I was curious.

Franbern flowers I’m so sorry for the loss of your son.

How lovely that Lord Alli was a mentor to him, and how kind of him to support your family. It sounds like he has always been a kind person with a generous heartflowers
