How long will this continue?

No word yet from Yvette Cooper who insists “smashing the gangs” is the way to stop this. Hmm.

I agree that there is nothing wrong with a post which seeks to find out who is claiming asylum and why, but that isn’t what this is, it is a controversial thread GrannyGravy13.

It picks on the number of migrants on one day and implies that is the norm, when it isn’t.

It says Yvette Cooper hasn’t said anything about it, and implies she isn’t doing anything other than ‘smashing the gangs’ when she is and it’s been in the news.

It’s one of a series of posts saying the same thing made by a very limited number of posters, designed to set the cat among the pigeons is what it is.

The OP doesn’t imply its the norm

The OP just points out the number of migrants who arrived on Saturday 5th October.

These figures are available daily on the Government’s website.

There are plenty of thread topics other than controversial areas of news and politics though FriedGreenTomatoes2. If you post inaccurate information about controversial topics you are bound to get informed people pointing out the facts - it’s inevitable. I know it’s tempting to start controversial threads, but do it in the knowledge that others will not always play the way you’d like them to.

Sounding like sour grapes, informed people?😄 what makes you think that most on GN are not informed?
So if you don’t like a thread title you name it ‘controversial’ do you? Wasn’t aware of anyone playing either.
If you consider others to be your equal on here you won’t go far wrong.

I did not say most on Gransnet were uninformed Oreo? I said that people posting on News and Politics should be informed if they don’t want their views challenged. There’s no sour grapes on my part, I’m just a pain in the ass who likes facts - and I don’t mind at all if you don’t like me pointing out when people post inaccurate things, that’s what I’ll continue to do.

Oreo Sat 19-Oct-24 14:42:47

Incidentally the title of the OP is a true one and does include the word ‘yesterday’ and wasn’t claiming that vast number every single day.
Yvette Cooper may well be beavering away behind the scenes and it’s early days for her yet but nothing of substance has come along so far.
So, all in all, a quite reasonable OP for us to discuss.

Oreo Sat 19-Oct-24 14:47:02

Nothing is stopping you from posting about things you believe are inaccurate Casdon least of all me, but expect others to feel exasperated too if you constantly demand proof.
Me, I’d just ignore those demands and carry on.

Hi FriedGreenTomatoes2

You introduced and interesting point yourself early on the thread - via using a web ref on other countries adopting a Rwanda" plan

It then led to an informative discussion on the difference between other countries use of "out of country" migrant processing ie Germany and Italy both who had different schemes, and people posted what they were.

without your quote the discussion wouldn't have happened, and I'm glad you posted it, as I learnt a lot, but.....

Friedgreentomatoes 2 daily Fail for me! I like the columnists, Richard Littlejohn, Tom Utley, Boris, Nadine Dorries. Imo they speak for the silent, sensible majority.

Casdon Sat 19-Oct-24 15:27:49

The truth is, none of us is going to change, are we, so it’s a case of like it or lump it from all quarters, your fun post about politics is my trigger, my posting links to information is your trigger. Sorry, but not sorry FriedGreenTomatoes2, because that’s just the reality, isn’t it?

BevSec Sat 19-Oct-24 15:32:07

Count me in,!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 17:12:16

It seems so Casdon.

Upon reflection, I think it might be okay if I just say (chattily) “I read in the DM today that …”
Or the Telegraph or whatever.

That’d be ‘my source’ and would perhaps be enough. Obviously if folk then wish to say “hang on a minute”then of course that’s fine too.

Well I only read a few DM news items online and also articles in the Guardian, Independent and others but:

Nadine Dorries and silent, sensible are not really words that belong in the same sentence, surely!

Where has Yvette Cooper disappeared to?
That strong opinionated feisty women who was going to sort out illegal immigration?
Oh … she is busy booking more hotels.

More hotels that Starmer said would not be used by Labour. 🤣

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 17:52:14

According to a report by Tower Hamlets council nearly 80% of Somalians are benefit dependent.

Just about all Somalians in the UK were originally asylum seekers yet flights from UK airports to Somalia are full of former asylum seekers going home on holiday while fresh Somali asylum seekers arrive.

So fleeing - but holidaying? How does that one square the circle?

We really are soft.

It’s like Groundhog Day on here

You do comprehend the basic enonomics and politics behind

hotels?

I assume?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 19:20:49

jasper who are you addressing? It’s not clear.
Me?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 19-Oct-24 19:30:31

“Clearly, this is going to take time, and we regularly review our use of asylum accommodation because, as set out in the manifesto, we’re committed to ending the use of asylum hotels and saving the taxpayer billions of pounds.”

That was from the link you supplied Casdon. ⬆️⬇️

The Home Office is understood to be reviewing the hotels being used to house asylum seekers. But the department would not confirm if it is seeking to use more or reopen any of those previously closed.

A bit confusing isn’t it?
Yes. no, maybe? They certainly aren’t revealing much - let alone A Plan.

In the meantime, - more hotels?
This is going to cost us taxpayers a mighty big sum.

I know I sound as though I’m carping. However Labour came in having dissed all suggestions from the Tories. I am still hoping Yvette Cooper has formulated a workable solution and shares it with us soon.

She’s just gone to ground. No interviews recently, no briefs from her office. Nada.

Really, it is utterly beyond me. Where does it come from this nonsense, this hatred, this prejudice?

And what's the pay off?

It would be a good thing to put to a public referendum because views are so polarised.

I dont think any Uk political Party would dare do that again for decades!

Hatred? A drama-llama word.

Anxiety and concern-certainly, whether it’s for what will happen here or what will happen to the asylum seekers or both.

Pay off? Looking forward to hearing yours.

BevSec Sat 19-Oct-24 19:52:17

Jasper16, there is no nonsense, hatred or prejudice in the above posts, it is sad you think there is.
