Sue Grey has resigned

Sir Keir Starmer said he wanted to "thank Sue for all the support she has given me", while in a statement Ms Gray said it had "become clear" in recent weeks that "intense commentary around my position risked becoming a distraction to the government's vital work of change".

I was also told recently by a financial expert that Keir Starmer may have benefited from a tax-exempt pension deal from the time when he was DPP. However, he criticised measures in the 2023 Budget which scrapped the £1m cap on lifetime pensions savings.

Disillusionment is setting in ☹

Casdon Mon 07-Oct-24 17:03:02

This isn’t new news Allira? Surely disillusionment is about things people didn’t know about before the election, not things that were already in the public domain?

This is all very Daily Mail ish!

Yup, all the Tory/Reform Grans are out in force. There are other Grans here too though thank goodness.

The Labour, and hard left grans, you mean defending their lord and master. For goodness sakes, we are allowed to disagree with you, even criticise the hypocrite we now have as a PM. after all you were all very good at chucking muck at the Tories. Who are after all not in Gov anymore, so why bring them into it.No it's tit for tat like schoolkids.

I didn't know that until I was told at the weekend.

So it was new news.

That's an uncalled for comment, IOMGran because if some Tory voters hadn't switched to vote for Labour they would not have won the election.

Lib Dems may have switched allegiance, too, as I did, to make sure the oh-so-decent Labour candidate here got voted in hmm.

So many who voted Labour are becoming disillusioned as are the Trades Unions.

It’s odd that when you had left a role 10 years before, when you weren’t an MP, you are accused of hypocrisy 10 years later when you are, because you vote differently on something that was a benefit to you 10 years before. It’s reported on at the time so people are aware of it anyway, and then somebody brings it up as a criticism because it’s new to them. But Hey Ho, I just hope the next PM is a saint in every respect.

Is there an unwritten rule somewhere?

Mustn't mention anything untoward about the Labour Government on GN.

Must remember.

No rule, it’s just odd.

Allira Mon 07-Oct-24 22:49:36

Ah well, makes a change of 14 years of criticism of the Tories I suppose.

maddyfour Mon 07-Oct-24 23:07:17

Nothing odd about it.It’s just what’s happened.

Allira Mon 07-Oct-24 23:12:22

Those of us who thought they should have a chance to bring some decency back into politics did not expect anything like this, so naturally we're disappointed.

Once Rachel and Keir push off we might be all right . All they need to reconsider is the Rwanda plan. Great deterrent.

Is it odd that Labour voters are commenting on the thread about the Tory leadership contest?

🤔

No, a good opposition is in everybody’s interest, surely? Perhaps the difference is that we aren’t too sensitive when people point out that our posts aren’t relevant though, which is what happens in most debates, parry and counter parry is the norm.

MayBee70 Tue 08-Oct-24 12:57:17

Yes, I agree about needing a strong opposition. But one that has the intelligence not to oppose just for the sake of opposing. Something that Badenoch will imo do.

Those who believe the rubbish in the newspapers are idiots, it is simply Tory propaganda I hope Starmer holds the line and does what is needed to mend the economy.

That is not maintaining giveaways to Tory voters who have too much already.

Makes total sense to employ people in key positions which a much Higher salary than PM. PM has very low salary when compared to other people in such key positions in business or finance.

Why would you consider that odd Alliraconfused

Lots of Conservative voters comment on threads about Labour MPs. It’s fine🤷‍♀️

I’ve got no comment on the Tory leadership because it’s party members that will determine the new leader, the same group that elected Johnson and Truss.
They would elect Johnson again tomorrow, they hated the “moderate” Sunak chosen by MPs. Judging by the extreme anti Labour propaganda in the press there is absolutely no indication they will choose a moderate this time.

Wyllow3 Tue 08-Oct-24 14:25:44

I started the thread on the Conservative leadership as I have a genuine interest in getting a good opposition, a lively working parliament. Simple as that. It's at a crucial point, today it gets cut to 3 contestants, tomorrow 2.

It was in response to a post commenting how odd it is that Tory (and Reform) voters are on the thread criticising the Labour Government.

In fact I don't think it's odd at all.

I agree with you - it's fine!

I don't have a vote in the leadership contest, am not a member of any political party and am a tactical voter.
