The US Election.

With only 3 weeks to go, perhaps we can start to watch the shenanigans taking place in the USA.

Trump is warning America of his intention post election.

“Donald Trump has provoked an angry backlash from Democrats after calling for the US armed forces to be turned against his political adversaries when voters go to the polls at next month’s presidential election.
In comments that added further fuel to fears of an authoritarian crackdown if he recaptures the White House, the Republican nominee said the military or national guard should be deployed against opponents that he called “the enemy within” when the election takes place on 5 November.
He singled out the California congressman, Adam Schiff, who was the lead prosecutor in the ex-president’s first impeachment trial, as posing a bigger threat to a free and fair election than foreign terrorists or illegal immigrants, his usual prime target for abuse.
Trump’s comments, to Fox News in response to a question on possible election “chaos”, triggered an angry reaction from Kamala Harris’s campaign, which likened them to previous remarks that he would be a dictator “on day one” of a second presidency and his suggestions that the US constitution should be terminated to overturn the 2020 election result, which he falsely claims was stolen by Joe Biden”.

Rory Stewart is a perfect example of why trump won. Utterly out of touch, so convinced of his own goodness and will never understand.

It's actually quite moving - and really makes you think.

Thank you for this. Yes, very moving. But optimism lost today, and I feel bereft. Not for me- mid 70s and had a very good innings. But I so fear for my grandchildren and all the young people out there, all over the world. They will all be affected but the terrible events of today.

She was a weak candidate and everyone knew that whilst pretending not to. It is interesting that the only person to have beaten Trump is Biden. This may actually all be Obama's fault.
He persuaded Biden not to stand in 2016 because he wanted Clinton. If Biden had stood and won, I think Trump wouldnt have tried again. But it is easy yo say what if.

TerriBull Wed 06-Nov-24 18:28:16

I've been reading these comments by Jameela Jamil, English actress and activist and not a Trump supporter by any means, who nevertheless is of the opinion that liberals made 10,000 mistakes and outlines some of those errors that got Trump elected.

Biden should have stepped down earlier, The White House and the media shouldn't have covered up his cognitive decline.

The left and the liberals have been an increasingly alienating, hypocritical , ostracizing and punitive party for 8 years. They drove their own support away.

They didn't listen to their voters on the Middle East and have been dishonest in ways that have cost them the trust of the public and then have been found out.

Democrats mandated Covid vaccines dismantling "my body, my choice" rhetoric. They spoke down to the very people they most needed to covert at every chance over the last 8 years.

Regarding Kamala Harris, she continued. "They chose a candidate to replace Biden who missed so many opportunities to address Policy in far too many interviews and just focused on the fact that she isn't him, they turned down both K and her V.P. going on Joe Rogan arguably the most important platform on the planet to convert a demographic.

People with big platforms waited until the day of the election to endorse and encourage people to go out to the polling station.

The liberals were so sure they could beat him. To the point many endorsed a third party candidate who didn't stand a chance against a man who had a 9 year rabid fan base.

They ignored young men and boys and demonized them rather than calling them in, leaving them to be indoctrinated by the far right.

Jameela was of the opinion that race and misogyny weren't the main reason Kamala lost the election and the real cause was lack of policy.

She, JJ attests that her heart is broken and that she is angry because the left had the power and opportunity to avoid this outcome

She concludes, Perhaps those politically left of centre, can see that self cannibalizing, punitive, morally superior, condescending and hypocritical approaches have not worked,

Whether you agree with her observations or not, I think she has hit the nail on the head in some of her perceptions in how the Democrats have possibly alienated those who could have been their potential voters.

So eloquently put by Rory sad I couldn’t watch it. I put it on my iPad knowing it was going to restart at 5 am but woke up at seven dreading what I was going to hear when I turned it on. Once I knew I couldn’t listen to any more. I turned it off and tried to pretend it wasn’t real.

The relationship between Musk and Trump is going to be interesting. Two narcissists who both think the are going to rule America.

think?

I think Musk rules more than just America already.

Syracute Wed 06-Nov-24 18:16:58

Hardly a landslide !
It’s a disgrace to humanity and women’s rights ! It shows how lost the USA is to the modern world when a despot like Trump is elected !

Oh and those polls! Forecasting totally awry. Pretty embarrassing really. All that money, all this predictions. Might as well have tried reading the tea leaves. Cheaper and just as reliable.

What pleasure do you derive from this, I can't help wondering?

KH wasn't great. Biden was an absolute disaster.

But Trump?

There are no words.

foxie48 Wed 06-Nov-24 17:16:25

He was born in South Africa and lived for a while in Canada before moving to the US. Hopefully, unless Trump changes the rules he's not eligible to stand for president. He did become an American citizen in 2002 but he would need to have been born in the US to stand.

No. She would not have been their choice.
Now they have more time.
🤞someone excellent will come along.

Do you think that, generally speaking, America is still, basically, a Patriarchy?

And that KH, being a woman, was at a disadvantage from, as Americans say - the get-go? Apart from the actual politics?

I read somewhere, and don't know if it was true then, or is still true now, that the only country without a male-majority governing parliament, is, interestingly - Rwanda.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 06-Nov-24 16:01:48

I'm just confused why anyone thought it was going to be close?
Harris was known to be the worst VP ever, so how on earth did anyone think she'd be remotely competent as President?

All the euphoria and staggering fund raising once Biden had been ‘persuaded’ to step down (much to Dr Jill Biden’s fury) was utter relief he’d gone. All the whoopin’ and a hollerin’ for Kamala Harris was a groundswell of opinion that now they Democrats could really get behind someone who wasn’t Biden. Support from Oprah, Beyoncé, Swift even, couldn’t sustain the momentum.

It was touted as ‘too close to call’ by pollsters.
It ended up a landslide victory for Trump.

I said from the start that DT would win, all the fault of Biden who should have graciously withdrawn so much earlier so that the Democrats had time to choose a suitable candidate. He didn’t and they had to panic into choosing KH.

I agree. Didn’t he say that he would stand down after one term in office and then back tracked on it? Much as I like and respect Harris she would not have been chosen if they’d had more time.

Dickens Wed 06-Nov-24 15:05:54

Trump doesn’t need to do gracious. For some unfathomable reason he is well beyond having to conform to normal societal behaviour. He is the top dog? Keep whimpering…. But it won’t help.

For some unfathomable reason he is well beyond having to conform to normal societal behaviour.

Not unfathomable at all. 'Normal societal behaviour' is in the eye of the beholder. Trump's earnest dedicated-followers do not demand Trump follows a code that they themselves don't accept.

The rest of the world is diplomatic, 'tolerating' Trump's loutish rhetoric in order to try to prevent catastrophe. In the same way you deal with a toddler having a tantrum.

In spite of Trump's victory - the whimpering Democrats were a credible threat at one point and I really don't think they'll run away with their tail between their legs now.

It appears you are suggesting those opposed to Trump just lie down and roll over to the Top Dog?

It's not easy to quell the rise of the popular Right, admittedly, but neither is it easy to stifle those who are, or feel, oppressed by it. Those who feel oppressed by either the Right or the Left - they riot. As we've seen. They don't just go away.

What it comes down to is this - either you stand against those things that you believe are wrong, or immoral, or you appease the 'Great Dictator' for fear of reprisals.

How you view that is of course up to you.

And the thing to understand about Top Dogs is that they wither with age and time. There is rumour that only half of Trump's cabinet officials endorsed his campaign. If there has to be a Top Dog, it follows that one must eventually replace it with another.

Trump does not have age on his side. Neither did Biden, and it showed. It's showing with Trump, too.

How long will 'democracy' last with the deadly alliance of Kim-Jong-un, Xi Jinping, Putin and Trump- with the few rising fascists in Europe.

Never, ever, has it been more important for Europe to be strong and stand together, with the UK.
