The Trump campaign have filed a complaint against the Labour Party citing 'foreign interference' in the run up to the US election. A spokesman said should Donald Trump win yjr Presidency he cannot see him having an easy relationship with Starmer.

nanna8 Tue 22-Oct-24 23:56:34

I can’t imagine anyone having an easy relationship with either of them, frankly.

Someone in the Labour Party went too far promoting electioneering holidays in the US, we wouldn’t like it if the Tories recruited US residents to campaign them.

A gift for Trump

Oreo Wed 23-Oct-24 07:31:22

Not only a gift to Trump but a blow to Starmer and the UK if Trump does win the election.
Leaders have to be diplomatic as they never know who they’ll be dealing with next.

I can't imagine being convinced to vote for any party if an American turned up on my doorstep advising me on issues. particularly local ones.

Freya5 Wed 23-Oct-24 09:21:35

Well the damage started with Lammy, now this. They'd be the first to shout if a delegation of Americans came over here to influence our election.
The only people this concerns are the American people, trying to influence an election because you dislike who might win is arrogance at its best.

Wyllow3 Wed 23-Oct-24 12:28:54

It was not in anyway an official Labour Party delegation.

Around 100 Volunteers - no MP's went in their own time, paid for their own airfares, and were put up in democrat volunteers homes (all explored on the previous thread).

It is legal in the USA provided they are not paid.

Its just typical of the Trump camp to moan about this when UK politicians like Farage and Truss and others went over to take part in US politics earlier in the election (the Republican Convention)

and Jenrick conservative leadership candidate has actually said he wants a Trump win and has connections over there.

It came about from a SM tweet from Sofia Patel, head of Labour operations or some such job title encouraging members to go to the US to help the Harris campaign. It isn’t illegal unless money changes hands but is embarrassing for KS and the government at this tricky time, he may well have to meet and greet and deal with DT in the near future.

I believe he has issued a statement to say his relationship with Donald Trump is perfectly cordial and this will not affect it in any way.

Smileless2012 Wed 23-Oct-24 17:47:28

Is that likely to be the case now that Trump has filed a complaint MayBee?

winterwhite Wed 23-Oct-24 18:20:49

It was silly thing to tweet and it's irritating grist to Trump's mill, but it won't make any difference to the thinking of American voters, and while Trump is moaning about this he at least isn't moaning about KH. And if he's elected 😩 he will forget about it.

Will he tho?
He’s notoriously thin skinned.

If it wasn’t for Brexit we wouldn’t have to be sucking up to the convicted felon that is Donald Trump…

Absolute rubbish. Honestly, we worked well with him last time. Although the FS at that time wasn't such an undignified loud mouth as the one, unfortunately, we have now,

Casdon Wed 23-Oct-24 19:49:10

That’s just not true Freya5. There were major issues between Trump and Cameron before Trump even became President. Cameron’s memoirs were very clearly anti Trump, and he had a hard time with him again when he came back under Sunak.

Trump also had a very bumpy relationship with Teresa May because she wouldn’t let him do as he liked if she didn’t agree it was in the UK’s interests.

Boris acceded to Trump, which is not having a healthy relationship. When exactly was the time ‘we worked well with him last time’?

No. We had an undignified foul mouthed PM instead…

Can we not just get them to work in the UK until they sort out all our problems before bu***ring off to the USA to give advice??

mokryna Thu 24-Oct-24 13:09:30

I don’t understand, didn’t both Farage and Boris go over to support Trump?

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Oct-24 13:17:29

There are two separate issues

*Formal attendance and visits from both official delegates and big names to Republican and Democrat conventions

- plus big name funded speaking visits by Mp's or former MP's

and

*small numbers volunteers in their own time/money helping in election itself not speaking/policy engagements.

currently also being discussed here

Yes👏👏
If only more people had got off their rear ends and bothered to vote, we might not have had Brexit.😥

SueEH Thu 24-Oct-24 13:40:36

Trump is doing everything he can to garner sympathy before the vote. Individuals have always visited the states during electioneering and I don’t see him complaining about Farage.
The bottom line is that if he does god forbid get re-elected we will have to deal with him, respecting at least the office if not the person.
