Will Messrs Reeves and Raynor Still Be Around This Time Next Year?

Sir Keir's ratings have nosedived so badly since the election that I wonder which moves he might be planning for his first Cabinet re-shuffle.
He strikes me as having an underlying ruthless streak and won't hesitate to jettison certain unpopular "comrades" in order to shore up his own position.
Whenever I see a media photo of Keir, Angela and Rachel grinning idiotically at each other I just have to think "I bet two of you will have got your P45's by next year......"

I think the first reshuffle may see Louise Haigh moved or replaced, but I don’t see that it’s likely that either Reeves or Rayner will be moved any time soon. There isn’t a need to remove ministers who deliver on the government’s agenda, whether or not people, particularly those who didn’t vote Labour, like it or not.

Why Louise Haigh? (just wondering) - because of the investment thing?

I was thinking if the P&O gaffe, yes - I don’t think she’d understood the implications of her remarks, which will worry him.

I'll just leave this here: "Mark Carney endorses Labour’s shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves" - www.ft.com/content/13aeb762-5636-4423-b964-9128e2d9137d -

I hope he removes the eternally annoying Bridget Phillipson.

Calendargirl Sun 27-Oct-24 18:32:14

Yes, Rachel’s hair does not look as good as it used to.

I bet she is very stressed about the forthcoming budget.

She certainly doesn’t look so ‘bouncy’ and cheerful as she did when they won the election.

The last government delivered on only one of the forty hospitals included in their pledge though ronib. I’m hoping that Labour will do rather better for the NHS, including a replacement and renovations plan which will be more comprehensive. We’ll have to wait and see.

ronib Sun 27-Oct-24 18:16:40

Casdon interesting point you made- ministers who deliver on the government’s agenda . So forgive the cynicism but I have a nostalgia for the last government’s 40 hospitals pledge.
It was very convincing at the time and it is still in the pending tray.
Masters of spin ….

No obvious reason for any changes at this stage. I anticipate stable government for 5 years and probably more - better than we had from the Tories.

Absolutely.

There are other able Labour politicians to choose from, though.

I think the question is "Why Reeves and Rayner in these top jobs rather than any of the others?"

Maybe have a look at the qualifications and experience which Rachel Reeves has before asking your question.

Well, if all goes well, he can boast about having put women okay in top posts despite not knowing what they are.

If things don’t go well, he can blame them. It’s a win-win situation for him.

They’ll still be around in 10 years, hopefully, and this country will be in a much better position. I’m just thankful that the last bunch have finally been outed after 14 years.

Absolutely! I just wish the right wing media would give this new government a break. We’ve had 14 years of dire leadership (lying Johnson, Lettuce Liz and not forgetting Lord Cameron who began a new kind of rottenness with the Brexit vote…) so surely it’s to be expected that Labour would have a bumpy start.

Whenever I see Rachel Thieves and that dreadful hair cut I think of the kids at the "cottage homes" near the secondary school I went to. The boys had what we called a pudding basin hair cut as though they had, literally, had a basin put on their heads and trimmed around. The girls had a slightly longer version - known as a bob. It was done by the house mother as no one was going to send kids in care to an expensive hairdresser.

You would think someone in public life could afford a professional hair cut. Maybe no one offered her a freebie for it so her mum did it with the kitchen scissors.

what a nasty and pointless post.

I have some photos of my oldest DD with a pudding basin haircut when she was about four. It was quite fashionable in the 1970s.
I cut it but without the aid of a pudding basin. It looked quite cute.

Here's Joanna Lumley with The Purdey haircut, iconic in the 1970s.

DH has just reminded me that actually, the LP could have been elected at least twice in the last 14 years, 2015, 2017 I think, but weren’t.

Wyllow3 Sun 27-Oct-24 15:35:28

Will be interesting times when a new Leader is elected re policies, and yes, I think they are probably lying low thankful the focus is not yet on them....

Who knows?? Let’s wait until after the budget and give these guys a fighting chance to put in place their pledges and policies. The wheels of government turn very slowly, as I know only too well having spent the last 14 years of my working life as a CS!

This, more or less.

Curious tho - why do we get no O/P's on opposition politicians/policies? Its easy enough to criticise instead of saying, "this is what we should be doing instead"

As they're not in Gov and at the moment still awaiting a new Leader, let's wait shall we and see what policies will be made.
Going on the defensive because Labour are being slammed methinks.

He’s trying to make up for not knowing what a woman is, by having females in prominent roles (good idea)

I love this theory! Yes I see the logic in this. KS doesn't know what a woman is , so he has some sort of fake women in office. One of the fakes is infact Mr Rayner resplendent in a green trouser suit. Monsieur Reeves has escaped from Ello Ello and will say things only once.
