So that excludes the retired, the disabled, the long-term sick and those turning up at the local "Joke"Centre to draw Universal Credit because no employer will touch them with a bargepole because they only want the young, the totally fit, the subservient.

If Sir Keir has ever been the Working Class individual he's oft claimed to be........then I'm a Martian.

Which I'm not.

Just listened to the budget. After 5 pages of knocking it as aa viable term to use and to criticise Starmer, did anyone catch Rishi Sunak's reply to the budget.

What term did he use - yes, "working people

eazybee Wed 30-Oct-24 14:41:54

Well of course he did, because that who this budget is aimed at. and it is the only term Labour understand, their definition of course. His definition may be different.
Good to see him tearing into Labour. Starmer laughing away, shoulders heaving; Reeves looking less than comfortable.

There’s a lovely nonsense going on in the political debate. - quite honestly I think I’d end up a pauper if I had to rely on an income from my investments!
My latest not very bright idea was to buy some art and potentially sell on for a profit. Much easier said than done.

I hope someone does ask Starmer What is a working woman! Would be very interested indeed

You could try painting a masterpiece!

my investments consist of some free Barclays ( was Woolwich) shares and some free Santander (was Abbey National) shares. Hardly get rich quick.
And some Premium Bonds.

Allira my latest brainwave was to buy a Winston Churchill oil painting on paper. Then I found out about- ‘In the manner of the artist…’ I had a hankering for a time when Prime Ministers were head and shoulders above the rest….. still it makes a good conversation point.

Toetoe

The bus fares up from £2 per journey to £3 so a working person who catches the bus five days a week will pay £30 . This person is likely to be on minimum wage .

As I mentioned already. £30 for DD and £30 for DGD with no oyster zip or IGO options and not everyone working for the NHS got a pay rise.

Paint by Numbers Keir Starmer
On sale in all good art shops.

Winton Churchill painted flowers after the manner of Van Gogh. So did I but mine is better (though I say it myself 😁).

Let’s all pick on Keir Starmer, shall we?

Give him a ruddy chance.

He could at least have washed his hair before he appeared on Budget day ...

Pick on him?
I suggested ronib should paint him.

Here's one I did earlier.

Allira that’s so good Allira. Have you tried selling it?
I am still working out how to frame my fake Winston Churchill….

ronib Wed 30-Oct-24 16:07:41

Although you have captured a sort of Thunderbirds look - or Captain America? Allira and without spectacles?

A Prime Minster is meant to hit the ground running. This Prime Minister is still scrabbling around in the locker room looking for the key to his locker.

The Labour party have been in power now for over 3 months. Certainly it is too early to see the implementation of their policies, but so far we haven't even heard which policies come first and how they intend to implement them, and with so many of them not even getting a mention in the budget, we can be pretty sure that many priorities, like education have been put on the back burner.

All we have had is cloth-eared and clumsy policy statements that show that they have not been thought through clearly (WFA) and silly arguments about definitions that any half savvy government would have completely avoided.

This government has 60 months in power before the next election. 5% of it has already been wasted.

Allira, you’re very talented. I’m impressed.

Agree with you Monica.

Well put M0nica.
Allira, I’m impressed.

And yet the Labour party seem unable to come up with a definition for 'working people' hmm

...because, in my day ,

, being a worker wasn't just to provide your "main source of income" (which is as far as Labour's definition goes) - it was to provide for pensions and savings for your later life. So the transition from worker to retiree means we are worthless

Oh good. If Labour has given a definition maybe the speculation about what they meant will stop now.

I don't know about anything they've said about retirees being worthless though. All they said was that they would not raise key taxes (defined as income tax, NI and VAT) that would affect working people. How does that translate to 'non-working people are worthless'?

DiamondLily Wed 30-Oct-24 17:15:56

It seemed months of waffle about very little.

Most on NLW won’t be better off - what they gain in wages they will lose in UC top ups.

Whether employers decide to lay people off, because of the rise in Nat Ins, remains to be seen. 🤷‍♀️

Doodledog Wed 30-Oct-24 17:22:01

If it means taxpayers are not paying employers' profits in the form of top ups to their low wages, then that has to be a good thing.

I don't think unemployment figures are high - in fact we keep hearing that it is difficult to fill many vacancies - so if one employer doesn't want to pay NI, employees should be able to find one who will.

eazybee Wed 30-Oct-24 17:23:15

Rachel Reeves expense account is relevant because she is a public servant and in her decisions affect people's income. She is apparently unable to do her own tax returns, employs an accountant and claims the cost on expenses.
Do as I say not as I do is the mantra of this government.

Trueloveways Wed 30-Oct-24 17:27:28

I’m happy with the budget and looking forward to another 10 years of Labour budgets, policies and laws. I’m now looking forward to the LD party being the official opposition in the next Labour government.

MrsMatt Wed 30-Oct-24 17:29:05

I think that ANY person that wants to be an MP no matter which party they lean towards, should have to spend at least 6 months living in basic accommodation, on minimum wage while doing a menial job. If they are single then all they get is the current state pension. No help from family, friends or access to their own money. Let's see how many last the 6 months
