The Guardian offers counselling to staff after ‘upsetting’ Trump election result!

The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week.

In an email to staff, The Guardian’s editor Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support”.

I’m glad I don’t give The Guardian any of my money if they waste it to coddle employees in this way!

spottybook

Nobody offered me counselling when labour got in

Have you been physically threatened for your views or challenging opinions?

Your comment could be seen as quite treatening and upsetting! I do hope that spottybook doesn't need counselling after receiving that!

"Earlier this week, Trump told a crowd in Pennsylvania that he wouldn’t mind if journalists got shot."

edition.cnn.com/2024/11/07/media/trump-news-media-press-freedom-threats/index.html

It only takes one loony to listen to the stuff he's come out with and follow up on it.

Absolutely!

If President Trumpmusk does what he says he will we will all need counselling!

I think some will need a damn site more than counselling!

There's more to this than just upsetting journalists.

Trump has called journalists 'enemies of the people' and has dismissed legitimate journalism as 'fake news'. He has threatened to seize emails and phone records. He has said "We’re going to come after people in the media”.

Who knows what that kind of inflammatory language might lead to? We all know there are some loonies around who will follow through. There is anecdotal evidence that some journalists in the US have already been physically assaulted.

This is absolutely insanity and totally spooky for journalists.

This is truly a disasterous situation ..

Imagine ? A dictator going to kill journalists and leave children fatherless or motherless ..

Very very very awful 4 years ahead.

Students at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy were reportedly told this week that they could play with Lego, colouring books, and have milk and cookies in “self-care suites” following the result.

Jeepers.

Flipping heck!

Fried Green Tomatoes - I hope you are kidding!

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 11:53:15

How? Where is the threat?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 08-Nov-24 11:53:23

The sky didn’t fall in during POTUS Trumps last four years in power.

If the Democrats had put forward a better candidate at the beginning of the election process rather than go with POTUS Biden, in all probability they would not be facing four more years of DT.

This article and all the others like it don't mention that most organisations offer counselling including newspaper organisations so it's not balanced reporting. It's just trying to get people riled up and it's worked judging by this thread.

Indeed!

TheWeirdo Fri 08-Nov-24 11:54:26

I can't abide that vile bag if turd Trumpy boy but I don't exactly need counselling because he's won again!

And thankfully I never read The Guardian either!

We are going to definitely see a numerous amount of "expats and journalists and actors / actresses / vocalists" leaving the Usa for Spain / Portugal / Amsterdam / Switzerland / Ireland etcetra.

The sky may not have fallen in, but plenty of damage was done and will be done again.

I wouldn’t wish to be a young women the states already outlawing abortion (for any reason)

I wouldn’t want to be a judge or journalist.

California are already rushing to put some law state powers in place fearing Trumps planned attacks on what he considers “weak, leftie, woke liberals” , things we might just consider basic human rights.

Despite 14 years of Tory rule, we are fortunate to retain good employment rights, fair abortion rules and great hate crime laws, the USA already has none of these in some states.

This story regarding The Guardian offering journalists therapy due to POTUS Trumps re-election is covered by many other media/press outlets not just The Telegraph.

Calling the OP goady is not in the spirit of GN, when it is just highlighting an item which is in the MSM.

The Capitol riots hadn't happened in 2016. People died during that. It makes Trump seem far more dangerous.

Journalists having counselling because they cannot cope with democracy! Wokery at its best!

Please note, much of what we know about Trump is media spin. The Bidens also have been accused of crimes, but less has been said about this. I understand Kamala Harris has some questionable activity in her past. I believe they are all corrupt. I temporarily feel just a little glee at the woke, transgender-promoting, globalist-promoting, self-righteous, dogmatic noses put out of joint. But do I trust Trump? Or Musk?? Absolutely NOT.

Wyllow3 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:02:21

The email that sparked this thread wasn't in the main about journalists being offered this support:tho it was headlined in the thread title, but even in the O/P the only quote was

"Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support.

In fact - and I quote GB news here - Guardian staff werent offered "therapy"

but merely

if you want to talk about it, your manager and members of the leadership team are all available,' staff are told

What is the spirit of Gransnet? It seems really unpleasant these days.

Sorry to say it, but I find your remark tasteless and a tad offensive!

What “we” know of Trump has been witnessed by many of us, and many of us have good friends and family living across the USA.

Wyllow3 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:07:23

So various predictable news sources then go and make

into "therapy", gets seized upon tho "counselling and therpy\" was not in the Guardians email -

and same old same old politicking by misrepresenting what has actually been said.

I don’t think I’ve ever read so many dramaqueen statements before on any thread on any forum.
Will you listen to yourselves! It’s the sort of thing you expect from teenagers.
The sky won’t fall in, Trump won’t be executing journalists and sheep may safely graze. There won’t be a mass exodus of any professionals either.

And that is really rude and personal. Just because you don't agree with something, doesn't mean you can talk to us like that.

undines Fri 08-Nov-24 12:08:11

Trump doesn't mind if journalists get shot
Wes Streeting wants to push Jan Moir under a train...

All tarred with the same brush.

I would just say that remarks on here about censorship are very one-sided. Since the 'riots' recently, people were put in prison for tweets, causing others to be afraid of what they say, effectively censorship/self-censorship. It seems the only views you're allowed to express are 'left' - dare to post 'right' wing views and you're in danger. During the unrest following the dreadful murder of those poor little girls, someone posted a false account of a Muslim woman having had acid thrown in her face. How inflammatory is that! - but was he put in prison? No! Just a little one-sided, hey?
(Sorry can't remember who, look it up or disbelieve, at will)

Of course the sky won’t fall in, but you have no idea (nor do I), about how many people may or may not move from the USA!

If you think it’s OK for a president to incite violence, that’s between you and your conscience.

Being rightly concerned about an unstable 78 year old, having his strings pulled by one of the richest men in the world, isn’t being a drama queen, it’s being a realist!

It’s just another example of people being too upset to read any opposing views cos it conflicts with their own.Threats to leave the forum even.Nothing goady about an OP which is newsworthy.Honestly, what happened to backbone?
