The Guardian offers counselling to staff after ‘upsetting’ Trump election result!

The Guardian is offering counselling to staff as it vowed to support its workforce after Donald Trump’s “upsetting” US election victory this week.

In an email to staff, The Guardian’s editor Katharine Viner said the election had “exposed alarming fault lines on many fronts” and urged journalists based in the UK to contact colleagues in the US “to offer your support”.

I’m glad I don’t give The Guardian any of my money if they waste it to coddle employees in this way!

Maremia thank you for your good sense and empathy.

The vitriol on GN is, at times, disturbing IMO. I had promised myself not to return to this thread, but I wanted to acknowledge your good post Maremiathanks

The original poster is definitely not new to GN. One might say she knew exactly what she was doing on starting this thread.

This story regarding The Guardian offering journalists therapy due to POTUS Trumps re-election is covered by many other media/press outlets not just The Telegraph.

Calling the OP goady is not in the spirit of GN, when it is just highlighting an item which is in the MSM.

It’s just another example of people being too upset to read any opposing views cos it conflicts with their own.Threats to leave the forum even.Nothing goady about an OP which is newsworthy.Honestly, what happened to backbone?

I agree with Oreo.
People get hysterical over Trump. Why don't we wait and see what happens?

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 12:16:02

There are loads of right wing views expressed on social media, MSM. I don't think setting fire to a hotel with people in it is either a left or right wing view but nobody should get away with putting it on Twitter.

Wyllow3 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:16:21

Trump is the Kind of Drama, but his incitement to hatred and threats are very real as well as being highly dramatic. King of drama, really. If we comment on what's said and done, (the thread on the US election reported much over several weeks with examples and commentaries) and our concerns, the drama originates with Trump, not posters here.

Wyllow3 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:16:47

correct first sentence, "King of Drama".

Trump doesn't mind if journalists get shot
Wes Streeting wants to push Jan Moir under a train...

All tarred with the same brush.

I would just say that remarks on here about censorship are very one-sided. Since the 'riots' recently, people were put in prison for tweets, causing others to be afraid of what they say, effectively censorship/self-censorship. It seems the only views you're allowed to express are 'left' - dare to post 'right' wing views and you're in danger. During the unrest following the dreadful murder of those poor little girls, someone posted a false account of a Muslim woman having had acid thrown in her face. How inflammatory is that! - but was he put in prison? No! Just a little one-sided, hey?
(Sorry can't remember who, look it up or disbelieve, at will)

Most of your comment is rubbish!

Most of us on here are constantly and consistently attacked on here if we dare post a compassionate or empathetic view about anything.

We are constantly called “leftie woke liberals” if we express any support for human rights.

I’ve NEVER read any GNs having an issue with right wing views, far right yes, and yes, ANYONE is free to have their views and to express them here.

It’s a public forum, we are all different, we all have different backstories and life experiences, we have different professions and know different things.

I don’t think I’ve ever read so many dramaqueen statements before on any thread on any forum.
Will you listen to yourselves! It’s the sort of thing you expect from teenagers.
The sky won’t fall in, Trump won’t be executing journalists and sheep may safely graze. There won’t be a mass exodus of any professionals either.

Of course the sky won’t fall in, but you have no idea (nor do I), about how many people may or may not move from the USA!

If you think it’s OK for a president to incite violence, that’s between you and your conscience.

Being rightly concerned about an unstable 78 year old, having his strings pulled by one of the richest men in the world, isn’t being a drama queen, it’s being a realist!

Shall we not twist words or assume things?
I don’t think it’s OK for a President to incite violence or anyone else either.
What I do think is that Trump says lots of things and does very little. He was voted for democratically by the American people.
That doesn’t mean he can do anything that he likes to journalists or anyone else, you think the US is Iran or Russia or China?
Quite a lot of comments on here are OTT in the extreme.
My right to say so btw.

WellsRose Fri 08-Nov-24 12:21:31

Please stop being so rude about people who don't agree. I can assure you I have a backbone.

Indeed. There are some who just love to poke the beast, whilst getting in a jab at “leftie wokes”

Incidentally, I’m proud to be a “leftie, woke, liberal”, in other words compassionate, empathetic and willing to listen to both sides.

Doesn’t make me a bad person nor does it mean I don’t believe in consequences, supporting law abiding citizens, controlled and fair immigration, strong fair policing and a good justice system.

I have indeed “walked a mile” in many people’s shoes.

Try it someday!

I’m sorry that happened to you. I hope you got the support you needed to feel well within yourself.

My granny used to say, “empty vessels make the most noise”. Many people on forums like this don’t read the whole thread, just post their reaction to the OP. And many ignore posts they find challenging or awkward and scroll on like it didn’t happen. Which is similar to the way Americans saw that Trump was a misogynist and voted for him anyway.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:26:28

Compassion and empathy are not just found in those who are left of centre Cossy

Right of centre folk are able to see both sides of debates, also want fair policing, a workable immigration policy and a good justice system…

I worked in local government when the Brexit vote happened and we were in a state of shock for a few days and counselled each other!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:27:46

Left -v- Right and ‘never the twain shall meet’. We are like 2 tribes who don’t particularly understand one another. Or do … and find the ‘other side’ perplexing (at best!). 😁

Cambridge definition of fascism;
'a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control, and being extremely proud of country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed'

'State control' arguably applies more to Democrats than Republicans.
'Very powerful leader' - well, Biden and Harris were both pretty limp but unless the US constitution changes, Trump will have only normal presidential powers, which have not, as I understand it, been 'fascistic'
'Extremely proud of country and race' - that's rather open to interpretation. Lots of Democrats, I am sure, would say they are proud of many of the attributes and traditions of their country
'political opposition not allowed' - well, it's the Democrats and their supporters who are whining about the process of democracy

I do not see, MOnica, why wanting proper policing, education, immigration control and an end to the promotion of transgender ideology is 'fascistic'. Arguably, much of the transgender stuff is anti women's rights.

The word 'fascist' is thrown around far too much, to denigrate the views of others and put anyone remotely 'right wing' (a description that itself begs definition, seeing as so much stuff that is now 'right' used to be 'left', as looking after the 'ordinary person) firmly off the moral high ground.

'Fascist' has the most horrible, extreme connotations of the repression and cruelty of the Nazis and it is not accurate, fair or productive to throw it around and demonise people.

We need to LISTEN not LABEL

LizzieDrip Fri 08-Nov-24 12:28:47

Cossy hear, hear👏👏👏

Proud leftie, woke, liberal here too.

Of course, I dare say I’ll now be told I’m ‘virtue signalling’ and /or ‘on my high horse’.

What you may not understand is that Trump has promised to go after reporters who he dislikes and will limit freedom of the press in America. Reporters may have to divulge the source of their information, their text and e-mails can be read. They are one of the "enemy within" he will persecute. Yes, the reporters may be quite afraid and in need of counselling. Their lives will not be easy or possibly safe now.

It is indeed your right, just as it ours!

The difference is most don’t resort to insults such as “Drama Queens” or accusing us of acting like teenagers!

We simply don’t agree with you.

As for the US not being Russia, let’s see how long that lasts in January, when Trump pardons himself and all those involved in the Capitol riots.

A convicted felon running one of the most powerful nations on earth is extremely worrying!

Sorry I disagree, it has shown two sides (different) of opinions.

I just do not get the hyperbole over this election, which was won fair and square by the Democrats. The majority voted for POTUS Trump, they knew what they would get.

JanCl Fri 08-Nov-24 12:34:26

Yes and recently he suggested that if someone wanted to shoot through the assembled journalists, that'd be OK with him. Personally I'm devastated he got in. We are already seeing the incels and misogynists being emboldened online with their 'Your body, my choice' slogan. Which is chilling.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 08-Nov-24 12:35:02

I get name called so often because I happen to support Farage & Trump.

Fortunately for me the moderators have decided I’m allowed an opinion. It’s no good shutting down debate just because some posters hold differing opinions.

Life and discussion forums would be boring if we all agreed surely? A virtual echo chamber ….

I’ve never stated otherwise, not have I thought up insulting names for those on the other sides of the political spectrum.

I have friends and family with totally opposing political views, I still love them, I respect their choices, I simply don’t agree with much of their views. They are kind and empathic people.
