War on the horizon? Russia mass producing fallout shelters as Russia says it has the right to respond with nukes if attacked by a country supported by a nuclear capable country.

Someone is cutting the big data cables bottom of ocean between Finland and Europe. Only Russia would do such. Also cut off Estonia.

I would rather be viewed as nasty and condescending ( just your opinion) than appear to be frightened of a bully.

Fleurpepper Wed 20-Nov-24 22:39:42

Anyone who is not frightened of a power mad nuclear bully- must have other issues. All I can say without being very rude.

TBH if anyone who is not deeply concerned about escalation at the moment- I have to truly wonder about how and perhaps even why.

I've woken in the night, worrying about things I can do nothing about and this is another one.
Is there anything we can do? No.

My mother used to say "Don't meet trouble halfway" and that is good advice.

Fleurpepper Wed 20-Nov-24 22:43:14

I totally agree Allira. But as you said, easier said than done. The situation we all find ourselves in IS very worrying. Neither you nor I can 'meet it halfway' or make it go away.

Allira Wed 20-Nov-24 22:45:02

Meeting it halfway -
To worry, grow anxious, or distress oneself unnecessarily over something that has yet to happen
Or may never happen.

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 23:12:23

I’m a bit concerned, but as there’s nothing I can do about it, I’m trying hard not to worry.

Putin may be a narcissist but he's not a complete moron and this type of sabre rattling has gone on for years- millennia in fact. The difference now is that we know/hear about events, speeches etc as they're happening in many cases. It only serves to ramp up people's fears.

We were stationed in Germany from 1963 to 1966 at the height of the Cold War at headquarters of BAOR and RAF Germany. My father worked in the Ops room. Many years later he said to us that you didn't want to know what had really gone on. Sometimes ignorance is actually bluss.

it is not Trump escalating this but Biden

Trying to cause as much trouble before they kicked out - we are also poking the bear that is Russia- it’s not our war

Wars are a show of strength usually between alpha males. No different to the football hooliganism of the 70's and 80's. Zelensky and Putin are characteristic of two people grunting nose to nose. They know that whatever happens it is unlikely they or their families will suffer. For them it's chess. WW3 scare stories are only that....to create a notion of if we don't do X then Y will happen. There is going to be no WW3. The mood for war fighting among youth is non existent even in the ravaged areas of Gaza, Sudan, Kashmir, and Ukraine (where 52% want negotiations) the people don't want to fight.
Can't really see Starmer, Rayner, Reeves and Lammy rounding up the youth with a satirical private eye style poster saying "Your C....need you" or "Uncle Sam needs you" There isn't the sink of white working class lads ready for reveille....the BAME community is highly untrusting of govt...but most want to study or do business. The Russia-UK conflict is nothing to with the UK

Across the pond doddering Biden doesn't have clue about what ice cream flavour he is licking....Even my GS calls him "naughty boy" and turns the TV off.....and tells me off smilingly. The only thing genocidal Joe has promised the Gazans is a Veto in the UN (another aberration of the undemocratic process) ...thought he might have offered some defensive technologies or is it because the perpetrators are white fundamentalists Zionists.
I certainly don't want my G/kids participating in someone else's war...Do we remember 45 minutes the arabs were going to come and gas us....or the WMD's or protect and survive coupled with the AIDS adverts. Then we have the soft scares people being arrested for cocont placards, walking without masks during covid, checkpoints for travelling...as the leaders in partied. Don't worry be happy...spread love not hate....now where's that book...

What a lot of posters have heads firmly planted in sand. Just pray that all our leaders have the coolness and strength to keep their own heads as Putin rattles the Russian sabre.

nanna8 Thu 21-Nov-24 12:04:50

I really hope that they stop at just rattling . Russian bears don’t like to be poked.

Another thread declaring we are all doomed.
This time it’s Russia and Putin.
Periodically it’s global warming, although that scaremongering has been going on for several decades and we are still here.

Regarding Russia, the sooner Donald Trump is in power the better as he seems to be the only world leader with any kind of relationship with Putin, and the only one as far as I know who is in favour of negotiations between the two warring countries.

I was shopping today and a woman came up to me and said “I am really worried there is a war coming.” No idea who she was but very well dressed in trendy clothes and probably 50.

Fleurpepper Thu 21-Nov-24 17:29:08

JE, can't even begin to reply to your post. Truly.

And the bit about global warming and 'us still being there' - quite incredible.

Yes, we are still here, and have done very little about it and leaving all the mess for our GC or GGC- if they are lucky to get there.

Who’s we? The UK are one of the better countries going green and doing our bit.

Oreo Thu 21-Nov-24 18:50:10

Granted, the big fossil fuel burning countries need to get their acts together.

Trump talking to Putin is the best that could happen and may give Putin a face saving way out.

There'll be a run on loo roll again 😕

Everyone should at least try to have emergency goods, regardless. Bottled water, canned meat (or other protein source) cash money, medicines, torch lights, gloves, wet wipes, etc... No one wants to be vulnerable if our connections to modern society luxuries suddenly failed - communications, banking, electricity, water - especially if you are caring for grandchildren in your home.
