There does seem to be concern that USA will allow Ukraine to use the long range missiles they supplied to Ukraine to attack Russia.

Still, Trump is going to stop the war ‘in a day’, so that’s all right then.

Ukraine has already fired long range missiles from USA (ATACMS) into Russia.

Today they have fired the U.K. Storm Attack long range missiles into Russia.

POTUS Biden authorised their use earlier this week, and Keir Starmer followed him giving his permission to use the U.K. missiles just after this announcement.

It seems we are moving closer to WWIII. Bloody Joe's changing his rules on both long range missiles and anti personnel mines has Russia saying response with nukes is authorized by their doctrine.

Putin said using ATACMS inside Russia is the same as a war declaration. That's not good. Russia has tested a new nuke capable missile on Ukraine and raised their nuclear threat level

The US has upped theirs in response. Clearly the probability is going up. Someone cut undersea cables to Finland and Baltics too. Likely next places Russia may invade. And you have to watch what Iran and China are up to since the 3 are the new Axis

They were discussing the state of the UK army and navy on our tv. Preparing for war, unfortunately. All because of a miserable old man and a lunatic Russian. Pity they can’t fight it out themselves. Thousands and thousands would die.

They have to prepare nanna8 with the hope that war won’t come. I really hope not anyway. Our poor armed services have been so depleted in recent years that someone high up in the army (I can’t remember who) said that we would be unable to defend ourselves now in the event of war. And this week it’s announced that we are mothballing two of our ships and some other military equipment in order to save money.

Populations are being prepared for war, which is not the same thing as countries preparing for war.

It’s a possibility, but I think it is unlikely. All the same, if we are all scared (and the younger mums on MN are terrified) of the likelihood we will happily support funding armaments.

Maybe that’s wise - I don’t pretend to know. I feel sad for the young mums on MN though. My first pregnancy was during the gulf war and I was so scared for my unborn child. I do wish that we weren’t being fed constant fearmongering.

The war I Ukraine has destabilized the NATO / Russia stand off, it has proved how weak Russia is in conventional arms they are struggling. If they were really a threat to NATO they would
have rolled across Ukraine in a few days and it would be all over.

Now Trump wants it settled, to settle it both sides have to gain something, in my opinion the fighting stops Russia keeps what it has won. Ukraine gets NATO membership and secure borders. NATO membership is needed to ensure defence, when borders are guaranteed rebuilding can start, funding rebuilding is not going to get investment if conflict is likely to break out again.

Any idea of regaining the land lost should be forgotten, trying to do that could well start WW3.

Well seeing as Biden, has escalated it, or at least his puppet masters have, let us see shall we. Did Trump say he would do it in a day, or is that just your take on it.

Possible, but not probable. Putin knows that if he oversteps the mark, he will have te whole of NATO to deal with. That is what NATO is there for.

As for nuclear. It would be a the case of the big turkey voting for Christmas. NATO and the US could blow Russia out of the waterin a very short period of time, if they started using nuclear weapons. remember Russia has a Pacific seaboard and so do the USA and Canada, also a NATO member, so he would have to be prepared to immediately fight on two very long fronts, one running from Finland to the Black Sea and the other stretching 4,500 kilometres from north of North Korea to the Berents sea - and Alaska nearly touches Russia. I am sure that the US will have well prepared air force and military bases there.

Sensible post but do lots of posters want a sensible approach, often I think not.

I was watching a programme recently on iPlayer called How the BBC Began, and there was a section in there about how behind the curve they were when it came to producing rolling news programmes. Plus every story that came in had to be verified by a second source before it could be broadcast which made things even more ponderous. Richard Dimbleby was fronting Panorama at the time of the Cuban missile crisis and they really had no idea what was going on because it took so long for messages to be received over the the transatlantic cable. The light programme had to stay on the air overnight so that people could listen to Kennedy’s speech to the American public. All people knew was that we were on the possible brink of nuclear war. Armageddon. Even two of their most seasoned executives, John Tusa and Paul Fox, many years later couldn’t talk, without becoming emotional, about how impotent everyone felt about not being able to keep a terrified public informed. It was the World Service listening station at Caversham that picked up a message from Khrushchev to Kennedy saying that he had given orders to dismantle the weapons and ship them home. It’s was quite literally down to who blinked first. I tried to explain to GS recently what a terrifying period that was. I was the same age as he is now at the time and planning to enlist in the Army. It suddenly seemed there might not be a country left to serve. Of course now we know what is happening in the world minute by minute and it’s a far more dangerous place.

The oligarchs are his supporters along with top military and security leaders. Im sure they don’t want to keep the war going they just want to save face, a defeat would be much more serious.

They all have their power bases, they fear democracy because it would destroy their corrupt domination of the nation.

Biden wants to stop Russia gaining more land in Ukraine, by targeting Putins supply lines Russia will have to change to defence - he hopes.

With Russia in defence mode it will be easier for Trump to get a deal to end the war

I wish I could be so hopeful. I think Trump will force a grossly unjust solution on Ukraine and NATO and the West will lose that countries trust and pro-Western outlook, pishing it back towards, probably, China, for international support.

I ghater there were countries - centuries back - that "fought a war" by the leaders of the two countries playing a game against each other (think it was chess) and it was deemed that whoever lost the game lost the war. Much more civilised....
