Oh Mr Starmer … could things be any worse only 4 months in?

Domestically you’re nowhere to be seen. (I know, COP and saving the world jamboree). Your personal ratings have plummeted at -22. Your Chancellor is trying to defend the ‘change’ that Labour told us we needed - VAT on school fees, IHT changes, Net Zero, WFA stopped, inflation up from 1.7 to 2.4% - in your absence. To be honest I feel a bit sorry for RR. Firefighting for all she’s worth while her boss is halfway around the world. Now Starmer is telling us that he used to work on a farm….

Things just seem to be going from bad to worse for him. Buyer’s remorse anyone? Or is it jot early to tell 4 months in and he just needs more time?

That is uncalled for Casdon

I really hoped for a better standard of governance from Labour, they had 14 years in opposition to get their act together.

Those of us who are right of centre have had to put up with thread after thread of name calling and insults towards the Conservative government and on a fair few occasions towards those of us who owned up to voting for them.

Why should this Labour government be exempt from criticism?

When people make provocative threads just for the sake of it that is exactly what they are doing GrannyGravy13. I’m more than happy to participate in intelligent political debate, when people have points of disagreement about policy, but not on this sort of thread.

Free breakfast clubs, dealing quickly with people inciting hatred online, manned abuse lines, pay rise for doctors and nurses, and hopefully closing gaps so that the better off pay their dues, as well as everyone else.

That'll do me for a start.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 20-Nov-24 18:10:23

Good points MissA. Sounds like a good start.
But then why is Starmer’s personal rating so very low? Is the bad outweighing the good?

love0c Wed 20-Nov-24 18:13:00

MissAdventure there is so much wrong with your statement, I truly do not know where to start!!

madalene Wed 20-Nov-24 18:15:09

it’s because Labour supporters are so used to criticising that they are struggling to be on the receiving end of criticism

I couldn’t agree more.
With their performance to date, all criticism of Labour is justified.
I’m hoping for improvement, but not expecting it.

Uncalled for, but not unexpected.

Yes, but even using the eternal after the mess the other government left Labour are still finding it hard not to do what they criticised the previous government for doing.
It’s harder to govern than to oppose, it it’s really easy to raise taxes, so that’s what they’re doing (didn’t they say they wouldn’t do that?) and Starmer is busy doing his Iron Lady act so despised by Labour when they weren’t in power.

Those of us who are right of centre have had to put up with thread after thread of name calling and insults towards the Conservative government and on a fair few occasions towards those of us who owned up to voting for them.

Even those who didn’t endorse everything the Conservatives did, had to read those

threads so despised by Casdon.

Why should this Labour government be exempt from criticism?

Why indeed.

People who voted labour have been totally conned. I'm first to admit that the conservatives had lost their way but there were so many positives to look forward to but this government has got into power with conning the public of this country.

I think you'll find that category archived under the "Isn't Boris Johnson and his crew a useless, lying waste of space". You shouldn't have too much difficulty finding it; it was regularly used.

I am deeply cynical. After 60 years as a voter, nothing has changed with Labour. In government they are full of good intentions but incompetent and in oppositon, the prisoners of the left.

The big difference is that the Conservatives were always nasty but competent. Unfortunately in recent years they have become nasty and incompetent.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

It’s not archived at all, most recently used yesterday under ‘Rachel Reeves fictitious CV’.

Yet another tedious and provocative thread. Not everything has gone well with the new govt, I admit, but 4 months is very early days. The main problem is that the press in this country is owned by four old men who will be financially disadvantaged by the new govt and are happy to stir the pot. Regrettably, many on here believe what they are told by Murdoch, Barclay, Beaverbrook and Lebedev. I honestly can't be bothered with GN these days.

Oh, I thought we were discussing Mr. Starmer's own performance here. If Wes Streeting had been mentioned, I would have been less critical because I think he appears to be taking a long hard look at the situation. For me, Starmer doesn't seem open to much discussion, he is far too repetitive in his meaningless "I do understand" comments, really?, and his "we're facing a different situation due to the black hole". I think his ratings are plummeting because he looks woolly, (well he says he did work on a farm 🐑 🐑), and inexperienced.

MissAdventure Wed 20-Nov-24 18:37:59

Didn't he work on a farm, then?

Grunty Wed 20-Nov-24 18:40:05

Labour "being for the working man" seems a bit misplaced. It's true that they've given doctors a much needed substantial pay rise but shop workers, hospitality workers and care assistants are now in great danger of losing their jobs altogether if the warnings of Amazon, Greggs, Next, Aldi, Asda, Boots, Currys, John Lewis, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Primark and Sainsbury's and 69 other employers are correct.

You seem not to credit posters with the ability to decide for themselves. Not everyone, in fact very few who have reached the age of most Gransnetters, need a newspaper to tell them what to think. I don’t care what the owners of newspapers say, because I can think for myself.

If you feel you can’t be bothered with GN because you don’t like legitimate criticism expressed by posters about the party you support, then obviously that is your decision.

I know his father was a toolmaker though grin
