For anyone unhappy at the current government there is a petition available to sign. When I signed it last night there were 170k signatures - to say it's gathered pace is an understatement as it now stands at well over one million signatures.

That petition is now reaching 2 million and maybe Labour should take notice of how a vast swathe of the population is feling about what they have done so far.
Maybe next time vote REFORM - they can't be any worse than this or the last lot!

Casdon Tue 26-Nov-24 14:52:59

Under the British democratic system Labour definitely did win by a massive majority rowyn. That is why they have 412 seats. The percentage of the vote received, or the number of electors who choose to vote is not relevant in our version of democracy.

There seem to be very short memories of what a mess we were in before the last General Election. A lot of the measures needing to be taken now are because of the problems which were left by the previous Government .

I agree. Just what on earth do people think the Tories will do ?

I agree. If there was any realistic alternative to the Labour party that would be fine, but there simply isn't. I don't think that even those who normally vote Tory would do so after the past few years.

MaizieD Tue 26-Nov-24 14:53:55

You do realise that a 'debate in Parliament' is a completely meaningless charade. It's ostensibly held in Westminster Hall (not the main Commons debating chamber) with a handful of MPs and usually reflects the government line.

No questions will be asked...

I don't bother getting involved with politics usually, but*'keeping quiet* really should check her facts. Labour did NOT win by a -__massive majority.
And, yes I know that a petition for another election will not succeed, but, as already there are over 2 million signatures, there will have to be a debate in Parliament, which might involve some awkward questions.

Funnily enough, after the Brexit result, Starmer demanded another vote/ so he too must think it's worth a try!

And if anyone wants to know how to sign the petition -

Maybe check your facts - petitions with over 100,000 signatures will be "considered" for debate in Parliament.
Have you watched parliamentary debates? Some have single figures in attendance.

It's to show this government what people think of them.they think they can run all over us.we can't demonstrate on streets.so this is only message we can send to them as they have broken promises to the public

I believe you are in the minority with this opinion . Tories lost with a resounding vote. I would like to think that most of us realize miracles will not happen and that we will need much patience for the much wanted change.

The rate the numbers are whizzing round you’d be very worried if it was an electricity meter. Maybe it should be called an election meter.

CeliaT52 Tue 26-Nov-24 15:08:08

It appears that a lot of the (so called) signatories are from foreign countries. I think it’s just trouble making and should be ignored. Surely no one in their right mind expects all the problems of recent years to be solved in just over four months.

ronib Tue 26-Nov-24 15:20:07

Of course no one expects all the problems to be solved in a few months but no one thought it would turn into a real horror show!! Rachael from Customer Complaints has a very misplaced confidence in her business model.

Frogs Tue 26-Nov-24 15:21:56

There won’t be another general election no matter how many people sign the petition - what I get fed up with is every time a new government gets elected they immediately go on about ‘the mess’ left behind by the outgoing party. David Cameron was the worst - I wanted to cover my ears every time I heard him talk about ‘the mess’. 🙉

Duchy Tue 26-Nov-24 15:22:09

I signed because Starmer took heating allowance away and Reeves needs to wipe stupid grin off her face. Makes my blood boil.

Duchy Tue 26-Nov-24 15:24:39

Reinstate heating allowance.

It should get the same treatment as the petition to have another referendum on the EU. Seems some people just don't understand how our democracy works. It's quite pathetic. There is a much, much better case for having another EU referendum than preempting a GE that will happen in 5 year at the latest anyway.

Juicylucy Tue 26-Nov-24 15:29:10

I believe labour only won by a majority because of there manifesto. The petition is because they lied the things they are doing now was never put to the country before the vote. That’s the reason for the petition the fact they misled the country.

They really can actually. They are a bunch of chancers and grifters. Read about the latest MP of theirs who has a history of violence against women. At the very leaste the Freform UK Ltd vetting is pretty poor.

The Reform UK MP James McMurdock was apparently detained as a teenager for repeatedly kicking his then girlfriend, it has emerged, despite him previously claiming she was hurt after he pushed her.

According to court records released to the Times, McMurdock spent 21 days in a young offender institution after kicking the victim “around four times” in an incident outside a nightclub in Chelmsford when he was 19.

McMurdock, who became Reform’s fifth MP after winning the Essex seat of South Basildon and East Thurrock by 98 votes at the general election, gave a different account of events shortly after his victory.

Later in July, the mother of his former girlfriend told the Mail that the new MP was “a monster” who had “left marks on her body”, saying: “It took two security guards to pull him off her.”

ordinarygirl Tue 26-Nov-24 15:32:13

I don't believe the issue is what would the Tories would do but why Labour did not stick by the promise not to affect the working person. Farmers are by definition working people .
Just for clarification I am not a farmer nor am I a labour or conservative voter

Yes absolutely agree with this.

^Yep, same as for Brexit^

Absolutely Fleurpepper! Perhaps it’s time to start a petition for a second EU Referendum!

But Starmer already did that after the Brexit result was announced. He demanded another vote.
So those who have started this petition are only following his example, except that they're having a LOT more success than he did.
Although we all know that there is absolutely no chance of it happening, the rules say that there must be a debate on the subject in Parliament if the petition reaches a certain number of signatories . and as it is already over 2 million then a debate there will be.

That'll be interesting.

IOMGran Tue 26-Nov-24 15:47:21

It won't be interesting, it'll be just a waste of time.

Jane43 Tue 26-Nov-24 15:56:39

The amount of frenzy about this on X is ridiculous. This all dates back to Trump after the 2020 election with ridiculous claims of stolen elections and rigged voting. If anybody is thinking of signing this ridiculous petition be aware that you are being used by forces determined to harm the stability of our country. Elon Musk has posted UK post codes so that Americans can sign the petition, this man is very dangerous and the amount of disinformation his site churns out is worrying. The latest turn is people objecting to Starmer using the term ‘my government’ it is supposed to be evidence that he is a dictator despite nearly every PM before him using the term.

Jane43 Tue 26-Nov-24 15:58:04

Reinstate heating allowance.

Including to the 3.2 million pensioners on the higher rate tax bands?

Fleurpepper Tue 26-Nov-24 15:59:32

The massive irony is that most of the people signing this are the very same who voted for Brexit, based on lies, more lies, and lots of lies on top. And then went on and on about Democracy and tradition- and seem to not even have a single clue about British Parliamentary Democracy. Oh where Referendums are just part of- and like the Brexit one, not binding. Quite unbelievable.

Allira Tue 26-Nov-24 16:02:40

Oh, so presumably there is a list of people who have signed this petition which compares with the people who voted to leave the EU? Otherwise, how would you know?

I thought voting in elections and referenda was by secret ballot in the UK?
Although I do know that there are methods by which fraud can be detected.
