For anyone unhappy at the current government there is a petition available to sign. When I signed it last night there were 170k signatures - to say it's gathered pace is an understatement as it now stands at well over one million signatures.

Oh FFS, how ridiculous!

People ,as remainers did, very vocally I still see, are , at the moment, quite free to show their strong dislike of a Government worse than the Conservatives, and that is saying something.

SueEH Tue 26-Nov-24 13:17:26

Why on earth would anyone want to do that?

heavenlyheath Tue 26-Nov-24 13:18:39

Just who is there to vote for even if we had another election they are old has beens.

knspol Tue 26-Nov-24 13:31:59

Petition is not a complete waste of time as it shows the govt how many people are unhappy with what they've done so far and might make them sit up and take notice. I think they thought they could do what they liked now they are in power and are finding it much harder than they thought.

SusieQ62 who are the three who may have set up this petition?

I heard that it was created by an Englishman living in Sweden. The rules around petitions to Parliament should not, IMHO, allow people not even living in the UK to create or sign such petitions. It just encourages the world and his wife to get in on the act.

You heard accurately that it was an Englishman that started the petition - but he lives in England. He is a pub landlord. Check out today's "Daily Mail" online - where there is an article featuring him in it. No idea where someone got the idea of Sweden from.......

Yes please - a petition for a second EU referendum.

Yes, yes, yes please.

The Daily Mail has a hilarious article today with a map of the UK showing in shades of red and amber where the most people have voted in this poll. They must think their readers are dull, because at first glance it looks a major issue, it’s only when you read the article you see what a small percentage merits a deep red. Really, green with a slight hint of orange for areas where over 6% had voted would have been more accurate - still, it gave me a laugh.

The DM relies on its readers to follow and not to question or work things out for themselves. Pure demagoguery.

Of course a general election is highly unlikely however if the petition is the only way for people to express their lack of confidence in this government it's worth signing.I think Starmer finds the petion amusing .He should pay more attention to people's worries and fears perhaps we are not important enough to be listend to.

abby0950 Tue 26-Nov-24 13:49:27

The petition was started by an Englishman owning a pub. This misinformation is just trying to discredit the petition. What people don’t realise is that this petition, now standing at 2.6 million, will not instigate another general election, but it allows people to register their dissatisfaction with the budget and how the country is being run. I am sick of hearing this government blaming the previous government. When Labour lost in the last general election and the Conservatives won, do any of you remember the quote from the Labour Party - it went along the lines of “there is no money left”. It was in a note left for the incoming Chancellor. How can anyone think that stopping the winter fuel allowance for needy pensioners is the right thing to do, especially when billions are being sent overseas.

Spencer2009 Tue 26-Nov-24 13:50:56

This just goes to show that the public does not have any faith in Labour, I signed because I feel strongly at the complete shambles the labour leadership is making, blaming the Conservatives for everything, while they lie and lie.

There was a petition for 2nd referendum - it got 6m signatures. Still waiting for that one. At least there will be GE - in 5 years time.

Assume the map is from the government petitions' website?

Well done Andrew Marr for pointing that out, and that we do have a Parliamentary Democracy

Labour won the election. They have been in power a few months. They have a lot to change and a lot to rectify, after the mess of the last 14 years.Of course this begins with Brexit, which left huge problems for our agriculture, as well as most other economic and human rights problems.

Why are people beguiled with attention grabbing headlines from the Tory press who are desperate to hang on to the wealth of many of their readers. Michael Westwood who set it up is, guess what, a Tory voter. Musk is in on the game too.

But did you know, it is nothing near as strong as the petitions presented post Brexit, re article 50….6.1 million in 2019, and asking for a second referendum vote in 2016. Those petitions gained signatures very quickly and many more signed than this one.

To me, democracy is vital to a civilised country, that why we have elections and not simply campaigns to get rid of people we did not vote for. Who wants to go the way the US is going?

It also shows me how anti Labour and vitriolic most of the media is. I feel quite terrified by how easy it is to whip up fervour.

We must all read full information. We must also read between and beyond the lines. There is a problem with the current short levels of attention and inability to focus in on information. The media knows how to manipulate and use language to play on that.

Ninat474 Tue 26-Nov-24 13:59:14

Think I’ll start one to cancel Brexit then.
Amazing how some people think it ok to overthrow some democratic decisions but not others

Beanie654321 Tue 26-Nov-24 14:03:19

Labour are trying to sort out the problems that the Conservatives got us into over the previous 14 years. It will take time and they need to find money to right the wrongs. This petition is petty and wrong. I'm sorry. Some farmers landowners are moaning but if they have in excess of £3000,000 then they are being expected to pay inheritance tax and a certain celeb stated that he bought land so he won't have to pay inheritance tax under the Conservatives, who allowed the rich to get away with it. Please stop being idiots and give Labour a chance, which you haven't.

ronib Tue 26-Nov-24 14:10:30

FYI Michael Westwood is a REFORM voter…. And runs a pub.
All’s fair in love and war …… He charges £2.50 a pint apparently….

Good point!
And technically (though not in reality) that was an advisory vote!
grin

Seagull72 Tue 26-Nov-24 14:17:34

This is a Tory driven stunt trying to emulate Trump and his cronies. We should have had a general election after the disastrous Brexit decision. Tories have ruined our country.

ronib Tue 26-Nov-24 14:39:24

Seagull72 the Tories are a spent force. Reform is behind this petition. I expect to see more from Reform in the build up to the next election. It won’t be pretty.

rowyn Tue 26-Nov-24 14:48:48

I don't bother getting involved with politics usually, but*'keeping quiet* really should check her facts. Labour did NOT win by a -__massive majority.
And, yes I know that a petition for another election will not succeed, but, as already there are over 2 million signatures, there will have to be a debate in Parliament, which might involve some awkward questions.

Funnily enough, after the Brexit result, Starmer demanded another vote/ so he too must think it's worth a try!

And if anyone wants to know how to sign the petition -
