Which promises has Labour broken? What has caused the seismic shift from stereotyping benefit claimants as flat-screen TV-watching tattooed scroungers with gel nails and an inability to budget, to victims of a heartless regime who need sympathy and understanding?

I think it mostly has something to do with the mild Labour attack on the 'wealthy' by way of IHT and VAT on private schools. And slightly increased corporation tax... Just look at who is orchestrating it...

Though I don't think Labour exactly helped itself by immediately cutting the WFA and not raising the 2 child benefit cap.

Agree. Shocking, and cruel comments. Its like being back 30 years ago when MH had a stigma attached, and what you have said pours scorn.

Depression is a genuine health condition with real symptoms. It's not a sign of weakness, and it's not something that can be "snapped out of".

And yet, let's be honest here, we all know people who are not prepared to help themselves, or to get up to go to work - and who do not have clinical depression or severe backpain- and do use either or both as an 'excuse'. I know several.

As in the other thread about 'friend who won't help themselves'. Part of this may well be depression too, and yet all who replied agreed her reliance on others, whilst making no effort, is not fair.

It's not about either/or.

Of course there are illegal immigrant hotels, just watch the news. The government are calling them Asylum seekers when they are in fact coming from France in a rubber boat so they are not running away from a terrible country, they just want the UK's freebies.

Wouldn't it be lovely if a house next to yours was purchased by the government to house immigrant men how would you feel then.

Oh, I agree. The PR around the WFP was dreadful, and I realise that there are those who will suffer as a result of the cut. Means-testing always causes that. But my point is that it wasn't a broken promise, which is what they are being accused of doing. And in my experience it is the people who used to say they didn't need it who are howling loudest, which says a lot.

And yes, I am very aware of who is orchestrating the attack - it was more of a rhetorical question, really.

I am beginning to understand the mindset of this new government. When Reeves announced yesterday that the £40billion tax hike was necessary and that was it for the duration of its term, she clearly meant for employers. So therefore I am sceptical that any chancellor can predict the economic future two or three years down the line. So a little fib? I wonder what other groups will be her target? Employers are not taking her hike in NIC very well. Unsurprisingly.

Yes, some, but Fleurpepper what David said was appalling for all the reasons people have given.

In my work in the past I've known grown men cry because they couldn't work - and the stigma against them pushed it further.

This is what Reeves said,

"There will be no more tax rises or borrowing for the duration of this government's term, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said.

She told business leaders there will not be another budget like her maiden announcement, which included a rise in employers' national insurance contributions and the national minimum wage.

"I'm not coming back with more borrowing or more taxes. And that is why at this budget, we did wipe the slate clean to put public finances and public services on a firm footing," she told attendees at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference. (sky news yesterday)

"As a result, we won't have to do a budget like this ever again."

Sheesh. I suggest we wait to see if this is the case! Its laying down a stable path, no path would have been an easy one.

Ignorance is astounding, so many are perfectly happy for young people to idle their lives away when there is work, any employer will tell you how frustrated they are at the work ethic today.

Starmers plan is targeting young people who are mostly physically fit and could do many jobs, it’s going to be minimum wage, they should earn whatever money they receive, rather than do nothing.

and would you be happy for your children or grandchildren to be exploited by a fruit farmer, forced to pick fruit or veg, for example? Or do you just mean other people's grandchildren are to be told to 'snap out' of their anxiety/ADHD/depression and get out of bed and go and work in Poundland? Other exploitative employers are available

Gosh, this thread has taken a depressing turn. We have moved from discussing the (in my opinion) futile petition to have another GE, to predictably, blaming young people, those on benefits, 'illegal' immigrants, for all the ills of the UK. Some people have very short memories, and the same people, sadly, parrot the nonsense and misinformation churned out by newspapers owned by Non Dom/Landowners, or by the Stirrer in Chief, Farage. I despair some days.

I don't think that it is the Tories that people are thinking of voting for - they are as useless as Labour is turning out to be!

I am totally baffled by Reeves' thinking. The paltry amounts raised by her budget won't go anywhere near 'wiping the slate clean'.

I can only see two scenarios:

1) She is depending on selling the UK off to foreign 'investors' which she believes will drive 'growth'.

But we have seen that only serves to enable 'investors' to milk our services and industries for profits to enrich them and their shareholders while doing as little as possible to improve them in any way

Or

2) She is planning to use the very far from mythical 'magic money tree' that is the government's ability to create the money to spend into the economy without having to 'borrow' and pay huge sums in interest to the institutions and individuals which buy government bonds (that's what 'borrowing' is, the sale of government bonds). That would certainly promote 'growth but it wouldn't half upset the financial markets...

I somehow doubt that it is the latter...

Labour seem to be making one error after another. Their decisions by a bunch of inexperienced career politicians so far are quite alarming. Give them enough rope……..

The repetition of incorrect and biased information about the government, asylum seekers, people on benefits because of health problems is increasingly a feature on gransnet. It’s bonkers. Where is the sensible well informed debates about the concerns ?

To those shouting how would you like it if ‘illegals’ moved in next door. My town is a sanctuary for asylum seekers. So far I don’t have any living next door to me but one of my daughters has a family from a dangerous part of Africa living next to her.

I heard that it was created by an Englishman living in Sweden. The rules around petitions to Parliament should not, IMHO, allow people not even living in the UK to create or sign such petitions. It just encourages the world and his wife to get in on the act.

The problem is our electoral system. The Conservatives thought they had a natural right to govern and treated us with contempt. Labour did not get a massive majority (they got only 33.7% of votes cast but, unfairly, a much higher proportion of MPs) but seem to think they have a mandate to do what they like, even going back on promises made and introducing controversial measures they did not mention before the election. We need a system where people don't feel the need to vote negatively so much and where their wishes are better reflected. Not surprisingly the PM likes the current system and has no intention of changing it, despite the growing lack of faith in it and the threat to democracy that brings. Until now I have always voted in elections but can't see me doing it again. That seems the only way to persuade the government of the need for change.

Given the situation they walked into, what specific decisions would you have liked them to make MillieBoris? On the prison, the doctors, for the worker on impossible minimum wages, for care, for the economy?
