Rachel Reeves lied on her CV and now Transport minister Louise Haigh turns out to have a conviction for fraud.

Any more revelations Sir Keir?

Rachel Reeves didn't lie on her CV and Louise Haigh doesn't have a conviction for fraud.

Reading about Louise Haigh - why did she accept advice to plead guilty only to have her case discharged? Bit weird….

As for Reeves, the right wing has been having fun with this but a strong job history in economics doesn’t seem accurate. Pity the country as her lack of economic acumen is beginning to show.

And now Louise Haigh has resigned. She had no choice. If only Robber Reeves would follow her example......

I guess the definition of 'strong' is subjective.

I'm extremely cynical about what she's doing, but to claim her economic acumen (compared with whom?) is lacking is a bit rich, compared with those who went before her.

She didn't 'fib' on her CV, but I suppose people think it's such fun to smear they don't like - maybe they never grew out of primary school name-calling. Proper discussion would be a breath of fresh air!

Haigh's resignation is the right action, but she wasn't convicted for fraud.

Everyone tells lies. It just depends on whether you are caught out or not.

Sarnia Fri 29-Nov-24 07:51:17

The Cabinet are human beings and prone to make mistakes as we all do. It would be in everyone's best interests if they were honest about anything untoward in their past because it often gets found out anyway.

It’s not crime of the century and it’s a spent conviction. Can no one be rehabilitated?

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 29-Nov-24 07:53:48

There are more Tory backed newspapers than not and they just can’t bear that we have a Labour government at last. All you Tories out there, are your memories really so short? From Cameron onwards they brought this country to its knees.

Greyduster Fri 29-Nov-24 07:55:52

I’m not a labour voter - never have been, never will be, but I know that Louise Hague was a good, hard working constituency MP. Saddened and disappointed by this. A waste.

Try having some nice thoughts at 03.33 in the morning. You might sleep better.

IMO her resignation shouldn't have been accepted. KS knew about this in 2020 and it didn't prevent him from making her transport secretary. He should have stood by her and weathered the storm which will soon be yesterday's news and let's face it, isn't the first and wont be the last.

Casdon Fri 29-Nov-24 09:08:50

It’s likely that although this was a minor offence, she knew she wouldn’t survive the next reshuffle anyway after her tactless comments about P&O, so rather than face days of media storm she decided to go. I respect her for doing that.

dogsmother Fri 29-Nov-24 09:14:24

It’s not minor to be a liar.
Holding office at this level the electorate deserves some kind of integrity and if it doesn’t start with honesty then I don’t believe they are worthy of the position.

Cossy Fri 29-Nov-24 09:20:06

If Starmer knew of this & it was spent, is it any one else’s business? I’m not sure myself.

keepingquiet Fri 29-Nov-24 09:20:58

Oh my and didn't the previous government set the goalposts so high?

I think it's a shame she's gone but at least she's doing the right thing.

This government can't do anything right in their attempt to clear up the biggest mess this country has been in for decades.

Agreed, a very hard working and conscientious local MP

What actually happened (BBC)

Following reports by Sky and The Times on Thursday, Haigh issued a statement, explaining she made a police report after a "terrifying" mugging in London.
She said she reported the phone as one of a number of items she believed had been stolen, and was issued with a new work phone.

Some time later, she discovered the handset was still in her house, and she switched it on, which "triggered police attention" and she was called in for questioning.

"My solicitor advised me not to comment during that interview and I regret following that advice," she said, and the matter was sent to magistrates.

Haigh said she pleaded guilty to making a false report to police at a magistrates' court, six months before becoming an MP in the 2015 election, and received a discharge - the "lowest possible outcome".

She added: "Under the advice of my solicitor I pleaded guilty – despite the fact this was a genuine mistake from which I did not make any gain."

On Friday she sent her resignation letter to Sir Keir Starmer, saying she did not want to become a distraction and Labour would be "best served by my supporting you from outside government”.

In response, Sir Keir said Haigh had made “huge strides” as transport secretary to take the rail system back into public ownership, and thanked her for her work.

Grantanow Fri 29-Nov-24 09:22:20

Haigh declared the conviction (an absolute discharge) when appointed to the Shadow Cabinet. She was honest about it. It's a great pity she had to resign.

It's very wrong to have a title with "fibbers" in and then tell one yourself in. the O/P (ie no fraud!)

Grandmabatty Fri 29-Nov-24 09:25:10

Thank you Wyllow for an unemotional response. The OP clearly hates labour and all it's works and those currently in government. It doesn't look like they'll let the truth get in the way of some malice

Not if it’s on Gransnet news and politics or the RF evidently.

flappergirl Fri 29-Nov-24 09:28:04

Good grief, the faux outrage on this thread is absolutely hilarious. How anyone who supported the last tory government can spit out the words "honesty and integrity" without chocking is beyond me.

Umpteen convictions and resignations over sexual assault, all committed whilst in office. Billions of pounds given to cronies for PPI. I mean, the list is almost endless.
