How Many More Fibbers Are In The Cabinet?

Rachel Reeves lied on her CV and now Transport minister Louise Haigh turns out to have a conviction for fraud.

Any more revelations Sir Keir?

It’s not minor to be a liar.
Holding office at this level the electorate deserves some kind of integrity and if it doesn’t start with honesty then I don’t believe they are worthy of the position.

What exactly did they lie about? It would be interesting to know.

It's possible to not support the Tories and think her actual behaviour in this incident was not honest. Do you think it was honest? Either standards are important or they are not. If we excuse poor behaviour then don't be surprised when people excuse Johnson etc.
I think she was dishonest over the phone, however in terms of her political role, as I understand it, she declared this information and they accepted it, so in that specific sense I dont think she behaved wrongly.

How many more fibbers are there on Gransnet?!

What does that mean?
I don’t understand?

Yes, I would like an explanation of that statement..

I think it honestly never occurred to her there would be a problem switching the work phone back on that she had thought was taken in the mugging.

In hindsight she should have informed the police "I've got my phone after all" and end of.

Good grief, the faux outrage on this thread is absolutely hilarious. How anyone who supported the last tory government can spit out the words "honesty and integrity" without chocking is beyond me.

Umpteen convictions and resignations over sexual assault, all committed whilst in office. Billions of pounds given to cronies for PPI. I mean, the list is almost endless.

You’re right, the list is almost endless.

Having read the “facts” of this case I’m afraid I think it’s a storm in a teacup (I’d say this irrespective of the party allegiance)

Yes, but if they didn’t tell her to do that, perhaps she thought it wasn’t necessary.
The insurance company makes it quite clear that I must inform them if I recover something I had claimed for as lost.

Yes ma'am......

mae13 Fri 29-Nov-24 10:14:10

If you truly NEED an explanation then your grasp of plain English is pretty woeful.....

Wyllow3 Fri 29-Nov-24 10:14:21

I think it's quite likely the police didn't tell her, simply becuase she had nothing to "hide" and nothing to lose by telling them.

petal53 Fri 29-Nov-24 10:14:39

I think she was dishonest over the phone

So do I.

Wyllow3 Fri 29-Nov-24 10:16:00

Why?

^I think she was dishonest over the phone^

So do I.

There was no financial or other gain to her in this though, as it wasn’t her personal phone.

Boz Fri 29-Nov-24 10:18:33

The Times has been told that the company launched an investigation after Haigh said that company mobile phones had been stolen or had gone missing on repeated occasions.

"repeated occasions" is the key to all this. More will come out so Miss Haigh has "done a runner".

I didn’t support the last government, but your post seems to say that you, as a LP supporter believes that two wrongs make a right, or that the wrongs of the last government should excuse the wrongs of this one.

I don’t think all LP supporters do that, but who knows?

It's quite simple. Spreading misinformation is the same as fibbing.

Ilovecheese Fri 29-Nov-24 10:23:30

I imagine that she knew she could not expect any support from Keir Starmer because she was critical of the behaviour of P & O.

LizzieDrip Fri 29-Nov-24 10:23:39

I think it’s a shame she has had to resign but I can fully understand why she’s done so.

The right wing media in this country (which is virtually all the media) has different standards for Labour MPs than for others.

Tory & Reform MPs can lie repeatedly and hold convictions from their earlier life but the media doesn’t hold them to account in the same way.

I not sure how you came up with that?

Two wrongs do not make a right and I don’t excuse this govt for things and think they’re whiter than white.

Just to clarify, I would call out any perverse behaviour and wrongdoing by ANY public figure, regardless of their political persuasion

Sssshhh LizzieDrip, don't mention Reform MP's James McMurdock! He's served is time in prison now and it's all over.

Not on GN it isn’t. 😂😂
And it would be sure to be dragged up if they were ever anywhere near winning an election. Besides, even being a convicted felon seems to be OK in some places now.

I don't think you should make allegations based on allegations until the circumstances are clarified.

I’m a bit confused about this. Gransnetters are saying LH wasn’t convicted, but I’ve heard on news outlets that she was convicted. With regard to Gransnetters, it seems to depend on whether or not any particular poster supports Labour as to whether or not they say she wasn’t convicted.
I would just like to know the truth, but I’m not expecting to get it from GN.

Wyllow3 Fri 29-Nov-24 10:53:59

A Discharge is a conviction but it was a spent conviction.

I dont think our political convictions can alter this, I think discussions arise around whether she needed to resign, since she had declared the incident (see Galaxy above, 9.36.)
