Personally, I observed an assertive, bordering on aggressive confidence and communication style, possibly because of her background ( father worked a GP and her mother was a physiology professor) and early successes.
Why would anyone come across as aggressive just because their parents were educated and successful people?

half a sarnie short, I think !

Who or what FP ?

the one who says sandwiches are not 'proper' food for lunch at work.

I should have thought, being French, you’d have been in complete agreement as to what constitutes a “proper” lunch!

Fleurpepper Mon 16-Dec-24 19:08:33

As I have spent my whole working life working in England- from aged 19- sandwiches have always been a proper lunch- whilst doing supervision, helping some to catch up, staff and department meetings, etc.

escaped Mon 16-Dec-24 19:14:27

Food is such an emotive subject amongst politicians. They're always either eating, or talking about steaks, burgers, sausages, icecream, even baguettes.

I really don't understand how half this stuff becomes NEWS? On any channel. Bonkers!

Also Oreo, please stop following me from thread to thread offering your opinions on Christmas trees, dogs, food, the weather, green trouser suits etc. Xx

Or chocolate biscuits.

What I want to know is, was the interview with Kemi Badenoch any good?

What do our right wingers think of her? I don't think that's really been covered on Gnet, has it?

I swerved it - had my morning shower - even though it was on the CT slot. Reason? I think the Tories are a busted flush. No matter who leads them they’ve not changed. We didn’t vote for them last time, why would we want to now? The ‘broad church’ encompassing One Nation (Lib Dems in camouflage clothing) mean little to me now. Boris was the best but he was lazy (and weak), clever, erudite but trashed his stinking majority.

So as far as I’m concerned now, Kemi Badenoch is an irrelevance. Vote Reform for real change!

*ha! Predictive text. 🤣

The last thing I need at this time of year is a right-leaning news channel that hates Muslims. Knowing that pig ugly mofo Nigel Farage may turn up at any moment is horrifying.

Wow! I wouldn’t like to be somebody you knew in real life and disliked.

should have watched it then!

Fleurpepper Mon 16-Dec-24 20:55:29

I just can't watch her. Her voice and manner are the most irritating ever- as well as her 'views'. Didn't see that interview, but seen her many times on Question Time, and the TV came close to losing its life.

GB news watchers need educating . GBN 's prime objective is to blame muslims amplified by those who are foreign asylum seekers, when there is no evidence that asylum seekers are either criminals or scroungers. Individuals may be but not because of their muslimness or legal status.
The Nazis used this technique in the 30's to give the false impression that jews somehow had excessive influence or power.
Therefore the values of Judaism had to be controlled and this ended up with concentration camps.
Sadly I am old to remember the Enoch supporters threatening Asians in the Midlands. Brexit continued this hatred, the irony being more muslims coming here due to free movement as part of a trade deals (cf UAE, Saudi etc) - not that I am against muslim immigration.

The educators are always really scary in my experience.
They are so sure of their good guy status but are often catastrophically wrong.

Fleurpepper Mon 16-Dec-24 21:55:09

I remember Kalm, and other Asian groups. We moved to Leicester the same year as the Ugandan Asians- the racism was just awful. I shudder at the number of times I was told, as a white 'middle class' immigrant 'oh we don't mean you, but them + P word'. Which was so ignorant as they were Hindus and definitely NOT from Pakistan.

They turned out to be so so successful, and watching it all develop was so incredibly amazing. Oh I do remember Powell and his 'rivers of blood' speech - it chills me everytime I think about it.

I am quite sure Kalm is not ignorant at all, and knows exactly what she is talking about, through experience.

I don't know about Leicester or other big city centres, but in three areas where we have lived since Ugandan Asian refugees arrived in the UK, they have been welcomed and have integrated.
Not all were Hindu, some Muslim, some Christian.

As I said, not all were Hindu.
In fact, when they went to Uganda to work on the railways there was no Pakistan. It did not come into existence until partition in 1947.

Louella12 Mon 16-Dec-24 23:45:35

I think we're forgetting that politics has changed rather a lot! Obviously change happens, but with social media and the realisation that MSM doesn't do its job any more, the next generations have hugely different perspectives.

They don't read the Mail or the Guardian. They look at Tiktok and other platforms. People will roll eyes at the mention these sites, but they shouldn't.

Trump won in some ways due to Tiktok. 13 million followers. Fabulous content from young adults. There was fun. The Trump dance. There was positivity. Kamala had nothing like it.

And now Farage is doing very well amongst the younger generation whether you like it or not.

Politics is changing. What might bother the older generation just isn't relevant.

And we'd do well to stop mocking those who voted for Trump or Farage. It doesn't work. In fact it may well have the opposite effect.

Galaxy Tue 17-Dec-24 07:24:38

Indeed. But they wont stop. They cant. Despite the endless results which show this.

Same here. I worked in Leicester then and was very closely involved with the Ugandan Asians. I visited their kids in schools, found jobs for the adults, ate with the families, attended meetings and appointments with them.

Leicester was happy to accept them and really bent over backwards to assist them. To this day they are proud of their multi cultural city. Many of those welcomed in the early 70s are now top business people in the city.
