So sad reading of this evenings terror attack in Germany.
A simple pleasure walking around a Christmas market will probably become a thing of the past.

I have been to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, I was so nervous as the Police presence was high, they were searching bags, we were all being funnelled into the old town.

I knew if there was an incident it would be carnage.

I told my husband I was unhappy and had a sixth sense that something would happen.
We left the town centre and walked around the parks.
My husband was patient but thought I was being a drama queen!

The following day there was a terrorist attack.

In hindsight the powers that knew there was a high risk.

I pray that all those injured survive.

Counter-terrorist and police look for connections, patterns, evidence of planning, evidence of violent threats, materials connected with bomb-making, connections to known terrorist groups.
He didn't fit these patterns. How can authorities monitor all the individuals who spout conspiracy theories on the internet.podcasts?

It's not a matter of "playing a card". M61, when it comes to these really appalling severe examples. It is what it is.

I think we are way behind in our definition of terrorism, the world has moved on.

GrannyGravy, Your post in no way reflects the facts known so far. Your comment that ‘there is a tradition in Islam to lie to protect itself’ is offensive.. the tradition of lying to protect ourselves isn’t confined to Islam. It’s also not in Islamic tradition.

That phrase playing the mental health card’ is another offensive and ill informed view point.

Iam64 you mean grannygranb not me 🤷‍♀️

Iam64 Sun 22-Dec-24 12:59:46

I’m so sorry GrannyGravy - I typed carefully grannygranb and didn’t see the predictive text on my iPad change it. Gremlins interestingly I’ve had to type it 3 times just now as it kept deleting it and replacing with your name which must be more familiar to the gremlins 🫤

GrannyGravy13 Sun 22-Dec-24 13:02:59

No problem 👍

(The Gremlin films are favourites in our house at Christmas, even though our AC are all grown up the GC now watch their parents old favourites)

Iam64 Sun 22-Dec-24 13:07:15

Well …. The invisible Gremlins have been busy here interfering with my central heating settings, encouraged six password changes on my new ring bell but worse - disconnected my tv box from its link to the internet hub. I’m sorry don’t mean to disrupt the thread but - I’m had to wait 4 days for a technician from my internet provider

From wiki:
In the early 21st century, taqiyya has become the subject of debate. According to S. Jonathon O'Donnell, some theories posit "the idea that Muslims have a religious duty to deceive non-Muslims if it furthers the cause" of Islam. He argues the "claim rests on a misreading of the concept of taqiyya, by which believers may conceal their faith if under threat of violence. This misreading is widely deployed in Islamophobic writings."[69] The term has been used by writers and counter-jihadists such as Patrick Sookhdeo, who posit that Muslims use the doctrine as a key strategy in the Islamization of Western countries by hiding their true violent intents.[70][71]

Sorry I don’t agree with you

Wyllow3 Sun 22-Dec-24 14:48:36

Just tested out the gremlins and they have learnt already 🙂

I very much agree with your post, Iam, on both counts.

Casdon Sun 22-Dec-24 14:48:49

That’s a most unhelpful response Mt61 unless you put forward a workable alternative suggestion.

“It is what it is” whatever does that mean? don’t be ridiculous! He’s killed a lot of people.

Saudi Arabia is an extreme islamist absolute Monarchy in which Sunni is the predominant faith.. It is ruled by Sharia Law.. and it is illegal to practise any other religion publicly..it still has beheadings..

As I understand it this man was trying to help people who weren't Muslims to escape to Germany.. It seems that he believed that Germany wasn't doing enough to help them..

apparently he had become Paranoid in the recent months about the German government.. It does sound like he was quite Mentally unwell to me.. But I expect we will get a fuller picture in the days to come..

Just so, pascal30, to its sadly very worst extremes - violence on that scale against others.

It's never, ever, a "Get out"clause, it can only explain, and it takes experts to define and explain how it can come to be.

If hes ranting & raving enough to knock people over then he can’t be well in his mind, can he? I have have many a bad day but I certainly wouldn’t wish to harm anyone 🙄

Mt61 You do write some appalling things. What you wrote was the equivalent of expecting an A&E consultant to treat himself when he has been severelly injured in a road accident.

Those working as psychologiss, psychiatrists, counsellors and more widely in mental services are as likely as anyone to develop a mental illness and like most people with a mental illness, unable to understand that that has happened.

Like what Monika? The truth! people are fed up looking over their shoulders.
Christmas should be a joyful celebration!

You don’t offer any solutions, Mt61 just constant criticism of what and who you consider is wrong. What would you do if you were in charge?

Who does on here? Nobody has the answer!

petal53 Mon 23-Dec-24 08:09:02

What on earth is that all about?
Why should any Gransnetter on here offer any solution? And what difference would it make even if they did? It’s not up to us to offer any solution because it wouldn’t make a blind bit of difference whatever we said or did. The solution, if there is one, is in the hands of those in power. And in truth, none of them have the political will to do anything that might actually change anything. Not that I know what that might be.

We have to accept that we are absolutely helpless in the face of such evil. There is nothing any of us can do and no solution that any of us can offer. And that is the truth!

petal53 Mon 23-Dec-24 08:15:31

My sympathy doesn’t go to the perpetrator. He must be absolutely insane to do such an evil thing because no sane person would ever contemplate doing such an evil atrocity. My sympathy goes entirely to the victims, who were innocently enjoying a normal Christmas activity and whose lives have now been destroyed.

Utter evilness and wickedness. There is no excuse or reason. But he must be insane because no one could be so evil otherwise.
