Money-grubber Farage?

Seeing the Robber Reeves moniker, I thought I might as well share this :

www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/dec/27/nigel-farage-working-paid-brand-ambassador-gold-firm-direct-bullion?

He's going to have a bit of trouble keeping to £300 a calender year allowable income outside his salary as an MP. Especially given he's apparently earned £177,000 from GB News since the summer along with income from social media and many other sources mentioned in the article.

Does he really care about foxhunting or is it just another feeding trough full of disgruntled farmers and members of the nobility? When do his constituents receive any attention?

Anniebach Fri 27-Dec-24 13:51:23

He is a liar , I heard him praising the hunt, seems those who hunt are not ‘toffs, ’ but ordinary country people , really?
ordinary country people ride to hounds ? They may follow the hunt but that’s it

Graceless Fri 27-Dec-24 13:55:50

Is there any one here from his constituency? I'd love to hear their opinions on his work as an MP. I understand he's not been seen there since the election.

The tenuous link is there are lots of foxes in Clacton?

Wyllow3 Fri 27-Dec-24 14:14:46

I'll be honest, I found it hard to join the thread because after a summer of some hostile monikers as titles has led to a lot of grief in terms of some discussions,

but when I read the article you posted I was horrified - I'll quote a bit more here - no politician surely can promote an individual company like this? I'm staggered - .....

"The MP for Clacton and Reform party leader promoted gold on behalf of Direct Bullion on a podcast sponsored by the company in November hosted by a fellow brand ambassador and influencer, Rob Moore.

On the episode, broadcast last month, Farage said: “I’ve been working for Direct Bullion … I’ve been doing a bit of promotion for them, bit of advertising for them, bit of education for them so you know I have an interest in this – declared.

“But I’m not doing it out of nothing … I’ve been doing this now with them for getting on for a year, but actually for the last five years I’ve been involved with financial markets newsletters etc,

making this argument that you should give gold a serious thought and it is open and accessible to you

but it's not possible to follow them on horseback through the alleys and dustbins,,,

Hunting is not just for toffs.

Having lived rurally for many years in the past and knowing people in the hunt I can state that just like shooting it is very much a rural pleasure that may attract Lords and Ladies but also agricultural workers, stable hands and many ordinary people that love a challenging ride!

When Blair imposed restrictions on hunting it was just as Starmer with private school fees a vote catcher as everyone loves a bit of “toff bashing”.

NotSpaghetti Fri 27-Dec-24 16:57:53

I don't agree Sago - if it was just toff bashing he'd have banned trail hunting too, surely?

Typical, I sabotaged hunts, not for people of Reform call Toffs but to stop hounding an animal to point of exhaustion then watching a pack of hound’s tearing if apart, and cubbing ? Hunting cubs for preparing young hounds for the hunt season

Nope. The majority of people in this country loathe hunting

Nandalot Fri 27-Dec-24 18:19:44

Well, the only encounter I had with the hunt was a very unpleasant one. The hounds had followed the fox into my back garden and they were rushing about like demented beasts. I was petrified they would find my cat. The master of the hunt made no attempt to apologise or control the hounds. I doubt if he could if he had wanted to. When I expressed my concern about my cat he was arrogant and rude.
His wife rather sheepishly turned up the next day to apologise, but I felt that was worse than anything as he couldn’t be bothered to do it himself.
Cat was fine and so was the fox sheltering in next door’s garden!
Sorry, rather a diversion post but it still makes me angry!

J52 Fri 27-Dec-24 18:21:35

“and many ordinary people that love a challenging ride!”
Sago

Does the love of a challenging ride have to involve the cruel, deliberate death of an animal?
I suggest that those who like a challenge do something useful and humane.

Sago Fri 27-Dec-24 18:41:00

I am not necessarily condoning hunting, I am stating it’s not as exclusive as people think.

Jeanathome Fri 27-Dec-24 18:43:51

How do the poor folk maintain horses that love a challenging ride?

I'd just signed that petition.

As a young mother walking out in the Devon country roads with my two children, one in the silver cross the other on the pram seat, a hunt came down the road and I was pushed into the hedge - It was incredibly frightening. It was as if I was invisible.

... as everyone loves a bit of “toff bashing”.

That's the kind of response which is designed to invalidate anyone who feels strongly about a cause, or who believes they have the right to hold certain people to account.

It's akin to the mockery aimed at those who think obscenely rich individuals avoiding tax, are simply filled with the 'politics of envy'.

We couldn't possibly care about exhausted animals being torn to pieces, could we - oh no, it must be 'toff' bashing...

And I've yet to hear anyone I know seriously referring to titled people with the 19th century slang, unless they're being jocular or ironic.

MaizieD Fri 27-Dec-24 20:45:23

If the majority of Brits ‘loathe hunting’ as HPQ avers perhaps that might put a bit of a brake on the rush to join Reform if Farage is a supporter of hunting…

Anniebach Fri 27-Dec-24 22:27:11

Unusual thread , very few posts supporting Farage, I very much doubt fox hunting would be part of a general election campaign .

Farage would support the death penalty if there was a cry for it,

nanna8 Fri 27-Dec-24 22:40:04

Farage hardly needs to ‘money grub.’ He’s loaded. They eradicate foxes here, it is very cruel and often leads to other species also being killed. There seems to be a widespread hatred of them. Thankfully they stopped hunting around the time they stopped it in the UK but they used to do it in the Yarra valley near us. If the press is to be believed Farage is getting more and more popular - mainly because of the unpopularity of the current government. I think if he was PM things would be pretty scary, an unknown quantity. He could, on the other hand, be good for the country. Who knows ?

JaneJudge Sat 28-Dec-24 10:56:35

I wonder what the statistics are regarding fox hunting? for and against?

At least it is clear he found himself the wrong side of the bridge and tunnel again, rather than working hard for his constituents who have a unique set of problems that doesn't include fox hunting

Yes, you are condoning it. There are many ways to have a "challenging ride" that don't involve putting the fear of god into a living, breathing, sentient creature and then ripping it limb from quivering limb whilst still alive once it has succumbed to exhaustion. Read those words. There is no excuse. None. Sending young boys up chimneys or ponies into mines or gawping into the bear pit at the zoo were all once considered entertainment and/or the only economically viable option. Now they are appallingly unacceptable and completely unnecessary. Why? Because civilisation evolves and we, as a species, learn and adapt. It's what we do best. If the countryside's economy hinges on something resembling the Colosseum "games" in ancient Rome, then I suggest there is something very wrong with it's business model and those in charge of it.

flappergirl Sat 28-Dec-24 12:13:58

"its" business model. I wish we had an edit button.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Dec-24 12:55:00

I am hoping that more stringent control is introduced. I think it is unquestionable that hunting and killing foxes continues. It isn’t a coincidence that the fox hunting season still exists. If fox hunting had indeed been totally eliminated there would no longer be a requirement for a “season” and those claiming to be following a trail could do so at any time of the year.
