I have have a ridiculously huge phobia about rats and slightly less one about mice.

I don’t agree with poison because it harms other animals, but I certainly don’t want either invading my home or garden!

It’s the “sport” element of killing or maiming animals I find so abhorrent.

With the banning of trail hunting argument, if a fox accidentally crosses the path of a pack of hounds & is killed that is accidental, not for sport. It's more akin to the many that are killed (or injured & die lingering deaths) on our roads.
I do think it should be carefully policed & I know there are many concerned citizens who already do this, so it doesn't have to be costly. If the huntsmen encourage their hounds on a fox's trail, that is wrong & should be prosecuted & if persistent, then ban trail hunting. But if it's a rare accident which the huntspeople do their best to prevent, I don't see that as a reason for stopping all trail-hunting, personally. Maybe a way of deterring foxes from the area to be hunted (Ultrasonic like cat deterrents? Hound music broadcast?) would limit these incidents.

There are many, many videos of foxes being "accidentally" killed by the hounds.
I couldn't even post one on here to prove the point.

They are deliberate, and far, far too gruesome.

The problem with trail hunting is that they are following a scent of fox urine so they are bound to go off track frequently, if they followed natural human scent as in Bloodhound hunting it wouldn’t happen.

If the horse fraternity want to ride across country there are plenty of fun rides and events that are very popular and don’t involve chasing foxes, they would be going where they are welcome, but then what’s the fun in that!.

The hunting was changed to “Hound Exercise” in the hope that the law would be changed, it may be a dream but it was their dream.
The law was written that trail hunting for hound exercise was allowed, to change that a new law has to be introduced. That will get passed probably within the next year.

Flappergirl my understanding of Sago's post is different to yours.
In no way, is Sago condoning hunting. She simply makes the point that it is not just the wealthy and or titled people who ride to hunt.

Sago did indeed say it was not just a pursuit for the rich, although I've yet to see a great deal of evidence for that. However, she claimed it was for anyone who wanted a "challenging ride". That doesn't sound much like condemnation to me quite frankly. It's rather like saying that dog fighting is for anyone who enjoys the thrill of betting. Would you interpret that statement as someone who cared about animal welfare or barbaric practices?

Not at all, there is no so-called hunting of foxes nowadays, just a gathering of smartly dressed riders and horses, capable of exciting riding over fences etc. There were always hobby riders and farmers out on their horses or ponies. The boxing day hunt was spectacular, a uk tradition

I think Caroline Lucas also resigned? I wonder if she gets as many death threats as Chris Packham does? I think he's great, his documentary Earth was fascinating in the way it gave the 'long view' on our planets existence. I felt curiously less desperate about climate change and its current trajectory.
I feel terrible about animals and how they are abused and used by people without a thought to their welfare.
As to rats, our cat kills rats and we've had a long debate about killing them but you know, again, it's about us humans and the amount of rubbish and waste food we throw around.
Remember Charlotte's Web and the rats delighting in the smorgasboard after the fair had gone?

If we were discussing the best coffee shops on a Chat thread it wouldn't matter. But we are discussing a law; the very thing that gives us freedom of expression. Even with freedom of expression the state can lawfully restrict or punish expressions that cause harm. Examples are violations of private life, defamation, hate speech, obscenity, pornography, etc., etc.

In the Electoral Commission's most recent monitoring of public attitudes they found three-quarters of respondents felt that not enough action was being taken to address misinformation/disinformation. I can only agree.

Very different where I live. I detest hunting for any reason whatsoever but a lot hunt deer, little innocent birds and basically any thing that moves. They love to kill foxes , rabbits or anything they can get their hands on. Don’t get me started …..
