Afghan women are being removed from Afghan society!

This is the latest ruling by the Taliban.

Women and girls are now living in total isolation, basically they are slaves to their fathers, brothers and husbands.

The English National Cricket team are due to play Afghanistan on 26th February in the ICC Champions Trophy.

I and many others are calling for England to refuse to play this match, what do others GN members think?

Silverling48 Thu 02-Jan-25 19:12:07

Keepingquiet how very kind. I will pm you.

It will be utterly contemptible if they play.

I believe Afghanistan is the only country which stops girls being educated, or speaking in public, covered from head to foot or being outside without a man accompanying them.
Women live in extreme fear there.
As for allowing men in this country, they won’t be able to impose such misogynistic rules here.

You haven't heard about honour killings then?

Yes, and it is against the law here.

Subjecting half of the population of a country to these extremist measures is the law in that country.

Therein lies the difference.

Can anyone check to see if this petition has been put on Mumsnet - if not could they because I'm sure it would attract a lot of signatures on there.

Signed Will share.

Signed. Hasn't it occurred to the Taliban that by withholding proper medical care from women during pregnancy and birth that they are putting the lives of unborn boys in danger? I don't suppose they care about girls but even they are needed to continue the supply of future males. But logic doesn't enter into it.

I think we all knew deep down that bit by bit women in Afghanistan would suffer once the taliban were back in control.
I don’t think that we or any other sporting teams should play there.

I don't know enough about where Afghanistan figures in world trade/economics etc but given that there has been conflict there with all the 'major players' in the world, and we've come away with bloody noses I shouldn't think the Taliban gives a flying fig.

I think they will. They love cricket. It is the most popular sport played in Afghanistan.

A teeny weeny glimmer of hope.

It was quite a while ago in the early days of the Taliban rise to power when we heard about Afghani women being beaten because their shoes made too much noise as they walked. I was discussing this with a group of women and there was laughter, shoulder shrugging and eye rolling. I was shocked, angry and saddened. I was sure that everything would get worse for the women and, step-by-bloody-step it has.

Are Western men all that much different? I cite the case of Gisèle Pelicot.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Jan-25 09:17:10

Aee all French males the same as Pelicot?

This particular thread is about the terrible conditions females in Afghanistan face.

Acknowledging one issue doesn't mitigate the other.

Really!

If you think western men are much different ? Please start a thread on this, it would be interesting to see posters points of view.

In the meantime please leave this thread for those who what to discuss and help the women and girls of Afghanistan who are being systematically obliterated from society.

Really? How do you know? Have you spoken to them?

My Afghan friends absolutely despise the Taliban.

R, an acquaintance who was an interpreter for the British forces has half his family here, the other half including his daughters left behind.

Absolutely. Why do we think people leave? Men can and do despise the Taliban and instead of supporting them we get a series of dark hints about letting "them" (unspecified hints they will attack women) in.

I wish there were more we could do in the meantime I hope this will get more publicity as the football is a good focus to bring it to peoples attention.

He must be worried sick about them.

I did mention earlier about seeing the Afghan teenage girls coming out of school the other week, incidentally it's a mixed school, and I hope they will make the very best of their education here and one day be able to make a difference.

Medieval is the wrong word because even in medieval times, women were not treated like this.

I was going to post a similar comment vintage1950 but you put it so well that there is no need.

I would add that, although some people think sport and politics should be kept separate, this is such an extreme case of violation of human rights that an exception should be made.

I can't wondering what the Taliban are afraid of happening if their iron grip on male supremacy is not maintained.
