This is the latest ruling by the Taliban.

Women and girls are now living in total isolation, basically they are slaves to their fathers, brothers and husbands.

The English National Cricket team are due to play Afghanistan on 26th February in the ICC Champions Trophy.

I and many others are calling for England to refuse to play this match, what do others GN members think?

Yes Silverlining48, may I join you in that? I am not great with petitions, but happy to send a donation.
Great thread, GrannyGravy13
Yes, if our only influence is through sport then use it.

keeping quiet. I have spoken to these people so I know they are honourable. Thanks

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 11:10:52

I can't believe hoe poorly the petition had done.

I wouldn't even state that its still doing; looks like interest has faded from lukewarm into nothing.

Wyllow3 Mon 06-Jan-25 11:26:20

Has the petition come up on mumsnet, which should attract more.

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 11:41:27

I don't know.
You'd think it might have done, on their feminism forum.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 06-Jan-25 11:43:53

I noticed that MissA it feels like there is total indifference to the plight of Afghani females…

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 11:48:04

That seems to sum it up, yes.
When are bring wiped out as members of society.
Removed, erased, forgotten, and nobody actually cares that much.

Not even enough to click a button.

I think people are reaching a state of tragedy overwhelm and are becoming numb to world events..

silverlining48 Mon 06-Jan-25 12:15:08

1,347 have signed, 97 today. It’s slow but creeping up.
I am not tech so unsure if anyone can check mumsnet who surely should be interested.
Have pm’d you Maremia, thank you for caring.

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 12:17:14

Seems its more of a tragedy not to like Alan Titchmarsh, ot to lose £4 a week fuel allowance.

silverlining48 Mon 06-Jan-25 12:23:18

Indeed MissA. Really disappointing that so few have signed.
I don’t understand why.
I don’t have a large circle of friends and family but have shared with those I have.

There is a thread on MN. It is only 3 pages long. Opened on 29/12 ended 30/12.
Lots of support.

Duly Signed.
This Taliban stuff is mad s***.
They're not even allowed to speak loudly, are they ?

Aveline Mon 06-Jan-25 16:43:09

They are not even allowed to have their voices heard at all

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-25 08:06:16

Just seen online that The Telegraph is reporting 160 MPs are calling for England Cricket Team not to play Afghanistan next month.

Well done to those MPs , but why aren’t the rest in f them signing and/or voice their concern.

P.S. I couldn’t access the entire article as it’s behind a paywall.

Aveline Tue 07-Jan-25 09:00:44

That's a start I suppose

silverlining48 Tue 07-Jan-25 10:46:06

Just caught the end of an interview on woman’s Hour on the subject of next months cricket match in Lahore and the debate around it.
Someone from amnesty was also talking about the Afghan women’s cricket team. Rather think if they still exist they definitely won’t be playing

Grandyma Tue 07-Jan-25 10:56:30

Signed

Athrawes Tue 07-Jan-25 11:20:42

I've just signed the petition and hope that in due course life will return to some normality. It's horrendous! What a waste of intelligent women. It's hard to believe in todays supposedly modern world. What are the Afghan men scared of for heaven's sake?

Wyllow3 Tue 07-Jan-25 11:30:23

Perhaps the Taliban rather than all Afghan men. We don't know the range of views, and men sympathetic to women having an education and taking part in life more fully can expect to be imprisoned or worse.

It's a good question however. What are they frightened of?

Maremia Tue 07-Jan-25 11:32:32

silverlining48, thanks, looking for it just now.
Okay, fessing up. Not sure where pms come in. Have only had 2 before.

Maremia Tue 07-Jan-25 11:39:53

Sorted!

Doodledog Tue 07-Jan-25 11:48:56

I have signed, but to be honest I don't think it will make the slightest bit of difference. The Taliban probably disapproves of cricket anyway, and sport is at least something that ordinary Afghans can get pleasure from, and goodness knows they get little enough of that.

I care very much about what is happening to Afghan women, but don't know what we, in a very different society in the UK, can do to help, other than send money to resistance organisations to support women in danger or even more need than usual. Boycotting and sanctions only work when economies are affected in a way that impacts people equally. My guess is that Taliban members would be ok even if the rest of the population starved, and women would be fed after the men anyway.

It's beyond depressing.

CariadAgain Tue 07-Jan-25 12:44:12

Those poor women indeed. Signed and shared.
