Are you aware that many Palestinians work in Israel? They go to Israel medical treatment. Many road signs and public information leaflets are printed in Arabic.

Israel do not want to annihilate Palestinians. It's the Palestinians who want Jews wiped off the face of the world. From the river to the sea? I'm sure you know what that means. I hope you do anyway.

So many here familiar with the fact that this is also a rallying call for some Israelis, who want the whole area under the control of Israel. Its being currently enacted with the slow take over of the West Bank.

Have you ever read any of the things Ben-Gvir has said? They're much more specific and threatening than "from the river to the sea".

Today of all days should be a day when historic grievances should be put aside. It should be about some sort of reconciliation. Without that, there is absolutely no hope of peace and understanding on either side.

Peace and reconciliation is a worthy objective growstuff, but probably unlikely long term. I’ve been watching SkyNews this morning and their coverage has been detailed, and they’ve interviewed people from both sides. Listening to them makes me believe that long term peace is unlikely at this time, but we can still hope.

Unfortunately, I agree with you maddyone, but we can but hope. I'm not being naive or underestimating how much work needs doing to achieve some kind of peace or, at least, stability. I once thought the same about Northern Ireland.

Tbh after reading, listening and thinking about the prospect for continued peace since yesterday, I feel very pessimistic, after my initial hope.

There is so much hatred on both sides.

We have only to read the comments on this thread to understand how difficult it is to persuade intransigent views, and this is just a few old grannies!

There is no coming together and no tiny glimmer of hope frankly.

I’ve noticed on this site that when a poster wants to denigrate those with different views they go down the ‘a few old grannies’ route.I think you are a lot older than me Whitewavemark2 more my Mums age group but regardless of that yours, mine and others on this thread have opinions that matter just as much as anyone else on other SM outlets.

It isn’t a matter of persuasion it’s our own views on the matter.
Up to 7th October 2023 my own views were that a two state solution was probably, with a few reservations, the way to go.
I now think it should never happen.

Iran have gone very quiet lately since the virtual disbanding of hamas and getting rid of hezbollah leaders and the strike on themselves by Israel.Iran is no doubt dismayed by it all.

My post gave me no joy whatsoever. I listened intently to both the Israeli spokesperson, and the news from various sources citing Hamas. I read as much as was possible over night, and came to the conclusion I did because I cannot see the two sides agreeing on anything as there appears so much hatred between them. Hamas it is thought has recruited as many fighters as it has lost, Israel is expecting a large shipment of weapons over the next few weeks. The gulf is as wide as it has ever been and all the violence has simply made it worse.

I had hoped that the agreement in all its stages would bring lasting peace, but I fear that it will break down before the second phase can be implemented.

The BBC reported this morning that the new Hamas leader (hiding in Qatar in plain sight) is far more hard line than the previous one.

He is still advocating for the repeat of 7/10/2023 until all Jews are wiped from the earth on uTube etc.

There will never be peace until Israel feels safe, and I cannot see that happening any time soon.

Yes you are right, and unfortunately the same is true of some of the Israeli Knesset.

So the longer-term course of the war is probably contingent on the far-right components of Netanyahu’s governing coalition, and especially the rise of messianic Judaism, which seeks a pure Jewish state, and is very significant in the IDF.

Hard line is not a way forward for Gaza, not now not ever, there will have to be compromise.

War in the area will never really cease. It simply makes my heart sink.

They’ve gone quiet because they are finished. Their financial situation is dire now that there 2 big supporters have deserted them.
Assad and Hezbollah who siphoned off billions of dollars to them. Money that was sent by the west to help the Palestinians.
