I’ve started this thread because for some unfathomable reason the one discussing the latest agreement has disappeared.

An important subject for all concerned, and too important to ignore.

So as you were folks.

In the meantime another 80 people including 19 children were killed in Gaza since last night.

Netanyahu signaled there were issues with the deal shortly after U.S. President Joe Biden and key mediator Qatar announced it was complete

It was not yet clear if Netanyahu's statements merely reflected jockeying to keep his fractious coalition together or whether the deal was at risk

The Israeli Cabinet is expected to vote on the deal Thursday, but Netanyahu's office said they won't meet until Hamas backs down, accusing it of reneging on parts of the agreement, without elaborating

This is from Spectrum News (known for unbiased reporting).

No matter about the 61 teens, parents etc , Hamas counts the corpses then perhaps corpses of children, one death, in conflict child, adult, male, female is one too many

I think Netanyahu is waiting to give Trump an easy win.
Could be wrong.

Reminiscent of Iran hostage deal, sealed day after inauguration.

Hamas is the governing body in Gaza

The problem is that the war has been lost for Hamas, yet it won’t admit defeat and certainly many of the population don’t admit defeat.

After WW2 the population of Germany and Japan both accepted defeat and there was peace, there will be no lasting peace until Gaza stops fighting and disarms fully.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 15:54:53

I think Hamas accepting defeat will mean the complete take over of Gaza and the West Bank by Israeli settlers.
Where are palistinians supposed to go? There are already many thousands still living in refugee camps in nearby countries from past wars, decades after their lands were seized.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-Jan-25 15:59:51

silverlining I think that is a real threat to Palestinians. We know that one of Trumps sons? Son-in-law? Are keen to develop land in Gaza.

They often seem to be forgotten, don’t they 😥

Not sure Hamas is accepting defeat.

Sorry I missed that post, no problem.

I read that land along the coast in Gaza is already being marketed for luxury housing for wealthy Israelis, and others presumably.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 16:17:02

That’s ok gg

Yes, that’s the one. Trump family to build.

So I can’t see a two state solution.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 16:20:22

As far as Israel is concerned I believe there never was a 2 state solution on the cards.

Well I had hoped that it might happen, but I think that ship has sailed along with any hope for the Palestinian population.

Incredibly sad.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 16:24:17

WWM I think we all hoped but ……. sad

Boz Thu 16-Jan-25 16:25:21

The only card Hamas has is the hostages. I can't believe they will return all of them. Palestinians will not be allowed to rebuild which begs the question as to why little help for the refugees seems to be coming from other Arab States. Too much trouble?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 16-Jan-25 16:57:50

There will be no peace. The US is deluding itself. As long as one Hamas fighter still lives, this war is not over.

Boz Thu 16-Jan-25 17:04:47

The US has to be seen to be trying. Their Arms Industry must be raking it in - another shipment promised to Israel this month. The US needs a strong base in the region to watch what Iran is up to next.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 16-Jan-25 17:06:37

It is more than likely that Hamas cannot fulfil the criteria around the hostages. They know that if if every single hostage is not accounted for - dead or alive - and the alive ones testify to the very likely brutality of Hamas towards them, Israel will finish the job they started. No one can have peace with a terrorist organisation that repeatedly attacks you and who wants you exterminated, and shame on the world for expecting Israel to have a ceasefire.

David49 Thu 16-Jan-25 17:07:14

Probably the biggest obstacle to overcome is the UN supporting Gaza, while that continues its in limbo, no settlement, no rebuilding without security whoever emerges governing Gaza has got to guarantee peace and be able to control any extremists.

Boz Thu 16-Jan-25 17:12:32

The thing is David, what respect does the USA have for the UN. Remember how they pushed through the war on Iraq.
We live in the age of the Hawk not the Dove.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 17:14:12

The losses of nearly 50,000 civilians mostly women and children in Gaza and the West Bank and the increased land grabbing from Palestinians by illegal Israeli settlers are a recruiting sergeant for Hamas.
They want, they need, peace but this is not in Israel’s plans.
I wish it were.

silverlining48 Thu 16-Jan-25 17:21:11

Let us not forget the much respected Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu as well as a number of Israeli leaders have been regarded as terrorists in the past. It’s too easy to fling the word terrorist around, , it can change in an instant.
