My goodness the statement from the Murdoch is extraordinarily damning.

I wonder what it is that they are keen that we don’t hear at a trial.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 18:23:27

What was said about Diana that affected Harry before he was
12 years old, is it possible to sue a newspaper because of something they said of a deceased person ?

Sleepygran Thu 23-Jan-25 18:23:59

Ordinary folk couldn’t have afforded to take this court action as far as it has gone.Well done on him for continuing with it. What do the Murdoch lot not want us to know?

woodenspoon Thu 23-Jan-25 18:28:51

I don’t think it’s the Murdoch lot that done want us to know, as you phrase it.
If the trial had commenced and Harry lost which apparently was quite likely according to what I have read, he would have been liable for his costs and NGNs totalling around 30 million pounds. Harry pushed to settle on the last day. Three times the trial was delayed at Harry’s solicitors request. NGN were fully prepared to go. It’s been written on all media, newspapers and BBC correspondents. They all stated it was last minute and highly irregular.
Not being a lawyer, I can’t comment either way but one would assume he’d sue again if they were incorrect?

Tizliz Thu 23-Jan-25 18:35:10

As I understand it, if Harry had won in court but was given less compensation than Murdoch offered then Harry would have to pay his costs. So he was better off not taking the risk. But he still got the apology and publicity.

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 18:37:46

Why was Diana brought into it , doesn’t make sense

woodenspoon Thu 23-Jan-25 18:38:18

Yes that’s exactly it TizLiz. Financially he would be in real difficulty. So he settled. NGN wanted to draw a line under it. They were happy to pay him off and give him a carefully worded apology.

Lathyrus3 Thu 23-Jan-25 18:43:14

If you actually read the apology and the following statement issued by NGN, it’s clear that Harry settled for what could be proved -intrusion, phone hacking etc by News of the World- and gave up on further claims against The Sun and its management (including Piers Morgan) which presumably was a much weaker case without the proof needed to substantiate his claims.

So it was a settlement. Both sides gained something and lost something.

It puzzles me that people haven’t actually taken time to read thoroughly but have jumped to erroneous conclusions such as Harry wins against the Sun or Piers Morgan in meltdown, which is clearly not the case. As settlement has taken place hat can go no further now.

woodenspoon Thu 23-Jan-25 18:52:37

That’s right. Both gained and it cannot go further now.

Maremia Thu 23-Jan-25 19:45:21

It is sooo difficult to 'prove' in a court of law. Well done Harry!

Is this a joke

Anniebach Thu 23-Jan-25 19:56:11

No, why was Diana mentioned ?

I thought this thread was about the apology that Harry and Tom received from the powerful news group?

Not a bash harry thread surely that’s been done to the death!

Because the minute either Harry or Meghan are mentioned on here, you can bet someone will be along to start the bashing! In fact, they don't even have to be mentioned in a thread - any hint of the Royal Family brings the H&M bashing brigade out with their torches and pitchforks!

I couldn't agree more ViceVersa

Perhaps Harry should now take a good long look at himself and the harm HE and Meghan have caused to others, including their own families!

Jaberwok Fri 24-Jan-25 10:55:27

Hear! Hear. yellowfox.

Anniebach Fri 24-Jan-25 11:51:24

He will not do that, he will keep giving interviews so he can talk
about himself, who tells the world what they said when paying
respects at the death bed of their grandmother?

icanhandthemback Fri 24-Jan-25 12:34:29

And so it starts again!

This is why Hugh Grant had to settle out of court, although unhappy about it. He could not risk financial ruin

All of you criticising Prince Harry, and bring his wife into it, are doing exactly what the vile Murdoch wants. He wants to see people getting in a fluster about Harry and Meghan, talking about his 'betrayal' of his family, his 'greed' at taking a settlement, anything to avoid discussing what this was all about; the illegal, law breaking activities of a major company, let alone the misery caused by the tittle tattle, misinformation and sheer lies.

I don't care what Harry & Meghan do, to be honest, but I do care a great deal about a newspaper owner who has been found guilty of a crime, has committed perjury, has ruined lives. There were many victims here, not just Harry & Meghan, we know there are a lot of people who believe everything that they read in the newspapers, based their opinions on what is written, I think we should be more angry about this than most people are.

Aside from their own families, who else have they damaged?

Yes! Precisely this! What the Murdoch group did to Harry and many many others was utterly disgusting, illegal and immoral.

Jaberwok Fri 24-Jan-25 14:05:38

Annie, did that conversation include an apology for all the grief and heartache caused to HLM by her grandson and his wife? No, thought not!
Financial ruin? Didn't these people have a cast iron case?

Cossy Fri 24-Jan-25 14:09:02

No, why was Diana mentioned ?

You cannot be serious?

1) Rightly or wrongly Harry blames the press for the death of his mother.
2) The press stalked Diana and her boys everywhere they went, even when granted photo opportunities they continued to harass them.
3) Harry blames the press for ruining at least one personal relationship due to their relentless pursuit of friends and girlfriends.

Anniebach Fri 24-Jan-25 14:16:50

Yes, Harry gave an interview to the press saying how important
Chelsea was to him, the press hounded them and it ended their
relationship.

What puzzles me about the apology re Diana, Harry couldn’t
have produce emails etc, can one sue for an apology for hurt
done to a deaceased person

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jan-25 17:07:01

The police are looking into following up the potential charges of perjury perverting justice etc.

keepingquiet Fri 24-Jan-25 17:10:25

Why am I even here?
