Shocking news this morning. On the tv and in the papers.

Apparently there are over one million migrants living here in the UK who have no right to be here.

600,000 of them are living in London. Just think about that huge number for a moment.

It equates to TEN football stadiums full to capacity in our capital city.

No wonder we’re broke. It’s dispiriting. Our borders are so leaky it’s not worth pretending any more that we have them.

What do you think about this newly released information?

I remembered having recommended this novel in a previous thread. For once the search-box found the post. It was in an interesting thread started in September 2020 which is very relevant to this one. There are some perceptive posts in it – and the tone throughout is one of discussion, not confrontation. That is an illustration of the way confrontation has recently become the norm in discussions of serious subjects.

There were only 63 responses on that post compared to 250+ on this one so really it didn't take off, whether that's a positive or not I've no idea. Also isn't it forbidden to bring other posts into an existing one (I'm not sure?)

No, I don't think so if it's as a reference point.

A thread about a thread is against the rules, I think.

I thnk the subject is generating more interest than it did four or five years ago. We have all had a few more years exposure than we had then. I am glad that it is getting a good airing, even if it does reveal some xenophobic attitudes.

Thank you for the clarification Allira

I do. And I find it pretty offensive.

Go in any city here and see first hand the problem, you wont hang around long, then make your judgement

What do mean Allsorts? I don’t follow your thinkingconfused

Native Americans are being harassed in New Mexico and Arizona.

Usha Vance has been receiving racist hate online since summer.

Imaround, Vance, vice president, has a wife with brown skin as you call it, as do a proportion of congress so it is not about colour. It’s about numbers. Go in any city here and see first hand the problem, you wont hang around long, then make your judgement
.Awful that you have bird flue and the cost of eggs is high as a result of that, it happens everywhere though. Happened here and Mad Cow disease.

It's not about numbers. It's about money. Those that have too much of it creaming from those who have none.

It's morally bankrupt.

America is screwed.

By releasing vigilantes and rioters from jail, Trump has ‘given permission’ to far right groups and individuals to victimise people in the groups he has said he wants removed from the USA. They are indiscriminate in their attacks, and innocent people who are US citizens will inevitably be killed. Having released the genie from the bottle, he is going to find it impossible to reinstate law and order.

Based on what I have seen previously, they will find a way to blame the Democrats, not Trump.

But I am seeing supporters are already regretting their vote because so many are now without jobs due to his hiring freeze.

We are headed for a humanitarian crisis in this country. Unemployment is rising and he is just laying people off willy nilly. Homelessness is rising, food is starting to get more scarce and expensive. It is the exact opposite of what he promised.

Just wanted to give an update on how its going in the US as of yesterday.

Crops are rotting in fields in California and Texas. Eggs are $9 a dozen. Beef is getting harder to find because cows have been affected by bird flu. Within a month we are going to have a food crisis that will affect non-migrants amd migrants alike.

Citizens are being rounded up and their 4th amendment rights are being violated.

Women and children with brown skin being harassed at church food pantries and on busses. Anyone with brown skin is a target, legal or not.

Citizens are being advised to carry their passports at all times.

Crossed posts - if food prices rocket, will people still slavishly follow Trump?

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 24-Jan-25 15:53:20

Oh imaround, that is scary.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-Jan-25 15:52:21

Agree David.

Trump will have known this would happen - I don't think he cares creating such civil unrest, which we are going to see.

Update on the ICE immigration round ups in California. Yesterday a few migrants were detained. Today 75 per cent of the field workers failed to show. Result...the oranges are rotting under the strong sunshine, and fruit prices will now go up for ordinary Americans.
But hey, who needs immigrants?

Mmmmm sounds familiar?

It really is unbelievably short sighted..

It would be more practical to allow 6 months to get work visas for those already in the US and sponsored by their employers, pretty much as the UK does with legal migrants.

Yes, I think Claremont used it as a quote, not her own words.

Using these around a phrase ^^ helps to denote it's a quote.

Ah, Claremont, "spaffing" is a new word on me. I love it.

No, it's horrible.

Just because Boris used it is no reason for us to copy him.

Even if you are a linguist, and 100% sure of meanings, including slang in English, I wouldn't advise trying to look cool by using such an expression. Luckily it was used in quotation marks on this thread.
Boris used the phrase entirely inappropriately because but he used it in the context of a discussion about the historical sexual abuse of children.

“I am astonished by some of the posts written here. Such a lack of compassion and having contempt for these poor people fleeing their homes and countries because they cannot survive there be it for political reasons or changes in the environment. I bet they would be the first to leave here if they could not feed their families.

This country needs people who will fill the jobs that we cannot get people to do. The economy of the country requires a succession of workers and with our birth rate diminishing who is going to fill the gap? Those here illegally need to be fairly and quickly processed so they can work and pay taxes. In my experience most immigrants work hard and value education and improvement. That is what made America great Mr Trump!
quite right”

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The telegraphs headlines have become more and more “click-bait” and inflammatory.

I’m all for sharing and reporting FACTS, backed up by evidence if necessary or appropriate.

That’s my main issue with GB News, it’s fact based but also opinion based and quite right leaning, which is all fine so long as those watching it admit this.
