Shocking news this morning. On the tv and in the papers.

Apparently there are over one million migrants living here in the UK who have no right to be here.

600,000 of them are living in London. Just think about that huge number for a moment.

It equates to TEN football stadiums full to capacity in our capital city.

No wonder we’re broke. It’s dispiriting. Our borders are so leaky it’s not worth pretending any more that we have them.

What do you think about this newly released information?

Tiley Thu 23-Jan-25 09:19:38

I think we need a leader somewhat like Trump who would send them back to where they came from.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 23-Jan-25 09:24:28

If they are here without a Leave to Remain permit, and are not in the system how are they earning money to live?

I can only assume that they are staying with friends and/or family and working in the grey economy.

Someone is employing them, and employees and/or landlords have the responsibility of knowing who they are dealing with, if they are not here legally it is the employer and/or landlord that is liable for prosecution.

Can’t see it in The Times. Which newspaper is it in. Let me guess. The Express. Mail? Sun ( if so maybe they’re trying to deflect away from yesterdays damning court ruling).

Grandmabatty Thu 23-Jan-25 09:33:29

It's in the Telegraph.
The report was commissioned by Thames Water- who are trying very hard to divert attention away from their woeful record.
It was carried out by a firm who is led by three Americans with their own agenda no doubt
None of the 'information' was based on Home Office statistics, so where does the information come from?
The word 'estimated' is doing some heavy lifting in the article.

Claremont Thu 23-Jan-25 09:34:05

What have the Cons done about it- apart from spaffing money up the wall in Rwanda!

Labour have 'processed' more in a few months than the Cons did in many years. And have returned many more too. And yet, some here want to blame Labour for the above.

Tabloids spreading hate again- with the help of their supporters.

Granniesunite Thu 23-Jan-25 09:35:15

Just wondering what the Telegraph is reporting about yesterday court ruling?

Surely this is not a distraction from that..

Are you not concerned that these people could be being exploited.

They could have been trafficked here, have no papers and made to work for peanuts, could be held in brothels, working as general dogs bodies with no rights or access to healthcare?

But hey ho, if it’s not in a newspaper you approve of it can be dismissed?

Stop sneering MayBee.
So far (not looked much) it’s the Daily Mail and front page of the Telegraph.

Trump has started kicking their illegal immigrants out already.
We need to be doing that.
1 in 12 people in London are here illegally. Madness!

More than 1,000 boat people have arrived here since the New Year. What happened to smashing the gangs?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 23-Jan-25 09:43:38

We have lacked proper leadership in all political parties for years. I actually envy America at the moment.

Doodledog Thu 23-Jan-25 09:44:46

I haven't read the article, as there is no link, and 'apparently' doesn't give much to go on to find a source; but maybe someone who has read it can explain who has counted these people and how they did it, please?

Grantanow Thu 23-Jan-25 09:46:07

'Estimated' figures seem to wind people up. Calm down.

I think it’s more likely that you’re trying to deflect from this issue as you always do…🙄

Casdon Thu 23-Jan-25 09:46:51

Before getting hysterical about this, I’d like to know whether this number includes people seeking asylum and the known numbers of those who entered the UK illegally who are in the system. If they are included in the figure it’s less of a headline.

The introduction of ID cards has been blocked previously, that would in my opinion be the first step to reducing this issue.

What is wrong exactly with trying to establish the facts?

grandMattie Thu 23-Jan-25 09:47:52

They are students whose visas have expired, and people of that ilk. No one controls them, no one knows who they are. the numbers are a guesstimate.

LadyGracie Thu 23-Jan-25 09:47:57

I agree with you FGT.

YOU can calm down and not be so patronising, some of us are actually very worried about this situation..🙄

Barleyfields Thu 23-Jan-25 09:51:27

If they have no right to live and work here, how has this number been calculated? I would appreciate some proper information.

Such people can’t be a cost to us unless they are asylum seekers in the course of being processed or appealing, but the OP doesn’t imply that that is the case. People living here illegally can’t claim benefits or obtain social housing.

Couldn't agree more.

I just checked. Only reported on GB News, LBC, Telegraph and Mail.
