I have never started a thread before but I find this attempted raid on an elementary school in Chicago today beyond appalling . I have family that are teachers in the USA . Now teachers not only need to defend their students against gunmen but their own government as well . I don’t do it as often as I should but I will write my Congressman and Senator . This is disgusting and unacceptable !

Who are you asking these questions?

The previous poster, of course, seemed clear.

It’s not particularly clear. It’s better to quote from their post or to name them if you’re replying to a specific poster.

Trump has set quotas for the number of migrants he wants rounded up each day. 1,200 to 1,500.

South American counties are refusing the planes because they say the way they were flown, chained and on military planes, is a human rights violation.

In response to Columbia refusing his plane, he has ordered a 25% tariff on anything from the country.

The cost of coffee, sugar, spices and fruit are about to increase dramatically.

Just read it, Columbia has now responded by putting tariffs on US goods!

Seems as though Columbia caved and is now willing to work with him.

Probably best for everyone, bit it will encourage him.

Wyllow3 Mon 27-Jan-25 01:26:05

There are other factors at play tho - Columbia has received millions of dollars of aid over the years, they are not in a strong position. (Aid to "stabilise" government, re the drug trade, etc)

imaround Mon 27-Jan-25 01:41:04

I completely understand it. Ot really is best for both countries not to have tariffs.

It is just another disappointment to see more people bend to his will. It gets more and more likely that no one is going to help us stop this madness, if that makes sense.

If you don’t stand up to a bully, it will never end.

Someone has to grow a pair. I am assuming that Canada will stand up to him?

imaround Mon 27-Jan-25 02:12:52

Yes, and I am loving the Mexican president right now.

Steel factories in Canada and Mexico have stopped taking orders from.US customers in anticipation of tariffs. It is good to know they aren't messing around.

I hope the EU flexes too honestly. They don't seem to have much patience for him.

He apparently had a phone call with Greenland and that didn't end well. I am seeing reports of him threatening Greenland again too.

Columbia is has enough problems of its own without picking a fight with the US, they have a major war with drug gangs. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the US to want control of its borders.

The US needs migrants, just like us it wants to control who is allowed in, Biden had a virtual open border, picking up those that crossed and shipping them to cities across the country. There isnt going to be a big falling out with Mexico, or Canada as with Columbia a deal will be done in the interest of both.

Greenland is different, the US would be really stupid to allow China or Russia to establish influence there, certainly not military bases. They could walk in tomorrow, my guess is they won’t but it will be a continuing issue whoever is governing the US.

Allsorts Mon 27-Jan-25 07:30:22

Glad I don't live there, but only they can sort it I’m afraid. If you enter any country illegally of course you cannot stay, its the way its enforced and more deterrent needed before they arrive.

Wyllow3 Mon 27-Jan-25 10:17:48

There is already a US military base on Greenland. Defence? Greenland is rich in rare minerals, look that way.

I don't see how anyone can back ICE snatching any undocumented person away and breaking up families, atm they say they are only targeting criminals - news and concerns here

Remember that it is not that long ago that teachers, doctors, neighbours and so many ordinary people would have been asked to denounce Jewish children- Anne Frank comes to mind. And that helping them would have led to loss of life for those hiding or helping them.

I doubt if Canada will step up. They have immigration problems of their own.

They have ordered Gitmo opened and it is being readied to hold 30,000 deported migrants.

The USA is a big, big, place. Could rebellious States be held in check by the military?

Power does ultimately depend on having control of the armed forces. Would Trump actually be able to control enough forces to subjugate all 51 states?

Does anyone remember the speech by Obama? Was there an outcry then?

Please post the speech you’re talking about Rula, people aren’t mind readers to know what you’re referring to when you say ‘the speech’?

I'd be interested in what speech too. All on U tube. I shall never forget his farewell speech.

Here are the final 1.29 minutes of that speech.
