For those who doubt it was on GMB around 8am.

I was gob smacked to say the least…

Why Oxford and Cambridge for our AI corridor GG13? I thought Doncaster was the place, already operational.

"I think it is a good thing if opposing politicians can comment favourably on others. Sadly it's a skill lacking in many these days." as Grandmabatty said.
And it doesn't hurt to remember that political parties, although in opposition, are all part of one country. Maybe a bit more cooperation sometimes would be better for our country.

I personally have mixed feelings about Mrs T.

She was the first woman prime minister so she lead the way and showed it could be done. She proved to be stronger and more decisive that most of her male predecessors.

She took us into war in the Falklands, she sold off loads of council houses, mishandled the miners' strike, smashed all the unions and destroyed labour relations.

I admit that some unions were wielding too much power and needed to be curbed but they also played an essential part in
ensuring good employment practices. Selling off council houses meant that the private rental market became overheated and the mess we are in today over housing is largely owing to Mrs T's policies.

More coal mines were closed under Labour, post WWII

I am posting/reading (?) without my glasses, apologies for any typos.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:31:50

I think she’s had the memo ‘stop talking down the UK’.
‘Boosterism’ is now the message delivery.
Smiley faces from hereon in from Labour. 😁

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:42:50

45 minutes in.
The audience is very quiet. No polite clapping at all.
Maybe they are snoozing?

I think that the OP is getting a tad over excited😄

Not at all.

Just posting what a Labour MP said on a news programme- News & Politics?

I was teasing - not being serious!

My opinion about Thatcher is that whilst I abhorred most of her policies I did admire her strength of character and single mindedness when following through her aims.

She was a clear minded thinker and ruthless. Her ruthlessness was what lead both to her rise and fall.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:58:00

She’s still droning on. I had to mute her. 55 minutes. I think she’s coming over as desperate. Rachel Reeves claims to be good at chess. Most chess players understand that knowing your openings and how to develop them is vital.

Well she played the Chancellors Gambit last summer, lost vital pieces and all momentum. I think she’s toast now. The tax hikes haven’t even come into operation yet (start April). It’s going to be a very bumpy ride.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 11:04:44

Last night Mandelson was toast, now its Rachel Reeves...

Barleyfields Wed 29-Jan-25 11:07:58

I listened. I lost count of the number of times she said Finally’ and then dashed my hopes that she was about to stop. Her voice is just awful, and now she’s answering questions she sounds almost hysterical.

Don't get me started about Labour especially New Labour under Tony Blair.

I'm waiting for a summary of the announcements rather than bits and bobs.

The tv programme on, I think, Channel 4 with Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter is supposed to be very good. It’s about the interview with Brian Waldron. He and Thatcher had a mutual respect, as did Thatcher and Tony Benn. Keir has always tried to work with the opposition if it’s in the best interest of the country and that’s how politics should operate imo.

Whaaat? The phrase ‘lost the plot’ comes to mind. I thought he despised her and took her picture down.

I wonder why you thought that. KS made it very clear that he doesn’t like portraits on his walls. Whether, incidentally, he despises MT or not has nothing to do with that, so your assumption is either in your own head or comes from the sources of your information.

I thought this was about Johnnie Reynolds?

If Labour supporters support Labour policies (shock, horror) they are accused of following blindly. If they say they agreed with some of what opponents did (or do) they are criticised for that. It’s almost as though balance is expected to be one-way only, isn’t it? grin

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Jan-25 13:18:13

Threads often meander keepingquiet. 😁

Not at all.

If I support a government policy, regardless of the colour of their rosette, I will say so.

I just find it hilarious that Margaret Thatcher is often (especially here on GN) blamed for the beginning of the UK’s downfall, and all of a sudden up pops a Labour MP praising her 🤷‍♀️

I have a soft spot for MT as when she became PM it was the first time I was old enough to vote, and I was ecstatic that we had a female leader of the U.K.

I admired her tenacity, she didn’t suffer fools, and as she said you turn if you like, this lady is not for turning ( from memory, and probably not word for word exact)

He's not proposing any Thatcher policies, the reference was to to ability to make bold vision decisions. Have to wait for the details of Reeves speech but here so far:

As we've been reporting, chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to deliver a major speech on economic growth shortly. Here's what she is expected to bring up:
The chancellor will focus on plans aimed at "unleashing the potential of the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor", creating a "Silicon Valley of Europe" - with hopes to add billions to the UK economy

She will also announce an agreement with water companies "to unlock £7.9bn in investment" for the next five years, aimed at improving water infrastructure - including the building of nine new reservoirs

Meanwhile the redevelopment of Old Trafford football stadium in Manchester will also get the government's backing
It will also announce its plans to review the "Green Book", which is used to evaluate big investment projects, "in order to support decisions on public investment across the country", including outside London and the south-east

The BBC understands that Reeves is expected to back Heathrow expansion plans, in a move to encourage a planning application for a third runway at the airport.

She must be at odds with Clive Lewis (Labour MP) who wants to Nationalise Thames Water and hopefully others too.. a large part of our bills at the moment go towards paying off Bank loans.. and giving these companies large grants is not the way forward..

Babs03 Wed 29-Jan-25 13:39:26

I don’t admire Thatcher but think she was a devoted to her position as PM and worked her socks off trying to bring about a new era for the UK which whether it was entirely successful or not, and I would say ‘not’ in many instances, she was of a very different calibre to Tory PMs for the past 14 years. A calibre I doubt we will see again in either major party.

Babs03 Wed 29-Jan-25 13:40:41

And I am by no means a fan so find it surprising that GMB presenters were so shocked. Perhaps is a light day for news.
