Is Sadiq Khan a good Lord Mayor of London?

After reports of political pro Palestine posters on the Jubilee line, I read up on Sadiq Khans tenure as Lord Mayor.

It does not make good reading.

We have a son and DIL living in West London and working in the City, they are not thrilled with the decline.

I would love to hear from GNetters, particularly those living in London as to your opinions.

He's been voted for three times I believe, so many Londoners must think so.

maddyone Wed 29-Jan-25 10:05:02

Londoners may like him, but I certainly don’t.

Cossy Wed 29-Jan-25 10:10:33

I’m thinking his city must like him as he’s been voted in 3 times.

I’m not too sure about him!

I really liked “Red Ken”. Johnson was a waste of space, even “Boris Bikes” was entirely his.

It depends whether you think children should be able to breathe clean air.

Sarnia Wed 29-Jan-25 10:13:54

No. It's a bit like Russian elections, there never seem to be any charismatic, dynamic candidates standing against him.

London is home to the largest number of ethnic minorities in the UK so that has a lot of bearing on it, when it comes to voting.
I don’t live in London now and am glad of it, and my answer to the OP from all I see and hear about him is a big fat NO.

Ken Livingstone was great!

Johnson was a waste of space who was elected Mayor 3 times!

He was rather popular to say the least

This is the third thread on Khan in about as many months.

What report is this new thread based on please?

loopyloo Wed 29-Jan-25 10:28:51

Well, he is not Lord Mayor of London. That's a role for the City of London . The square mile.
He is just Mayor.

Grandmabatty Wed 29-Jan-25 10:31:56

Rula Johnson was mayor of London twice. He did not stand after that.
It's interesting to see non Londoners with such a visceral dislike for someone who has little impact on their daily life.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-Jan-25 10:47:41

If its about reports of Palestine posters on the Jubilee line, they were put up without permission by activists and were taken down of course, what has the to do with Khan?

I'd post the same on both accounts, so I'll just add I agree.

London had loads of ethnic minorities when Johnson was voted in, I don't get your point, unless you believe they are somehow less capable of making voting decisions? Also as if they were "all the same background" which is simply not the case

I also have noticed the various derogatory posts about London and its Mayor recently. I vote for Sadiq Khan, as do my family who live in London. The improvement during Khan's tenure as Mayor that I am most grateful for is that my life as a pedestrian has been made far more pleasant by the Mayor's traffic calming measures.

tanith Wed 29-Jan-25 11:16:48

I don't think he's a bad mayor apart from the ULEZ decision which affected a lot of my neighbours and family drastically and i include myself in that. Has it made a big difference? I'm not sure it has.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 29-Jan-25 11:20:03

My three children all live in London. They are happy with Khan and voted for him.

As you say he is not Lord Mayor of London
TheLord Mayor of the City of London is the head of the City of London Corporation, the governing body of the Square Mile dedicated to a vibrant and thriving City, supporting a diverse and sustainable London within a globally-successful UK
Elected annually, the Lord Mayor of the City of London is an international ambassador for the UK's financial and professional services sector .
Sadiq Khan like his predecessors Johnson, Livingstone etc is the elected Mayor for the Greater London area.

TerriBull Wed 29-Jan-25 11:25:16

London has always been pretty cosmopolitan and of course there are a myriad of different ethnic cultures which are not by any means a homogeneous mass. What is apparent, whatever ethnic group people may belong to, there is a propensity to move out into the suburbs of Greater London and beyond as people prosper, that was certainly the case with the immigrant strands of my own family. Mainly because people feel too packed together and unfortunately the high level of crime as it is now is also a factor. London has its wealthy enclaves, but to live there housing costs a lot. A fair proportion of the poorer parts that are home to different demographics tend to be Labour held, so it's unsurprising that they would vote for a Labour Mayor. Most London Boroughs are Labour held.

Why has the O/P linked Khan with these posters?

Full fact
fullfact.org/online/boycott-barclays-unauthorised-posters-london-tube/

A crude attempt to smear Khan.

It depends whether you think children should be able to breathe clean air.

I have 2 daughters and 3 gc in London who walk to school/nursery every day close to at least one busy road. They say the air quality has massively improved and more than makes up for the inconvenience of some ULEZ restrictions.
For that alone and their sake I give him a big 👍

RosieandherMaw Wed 29-Jan-25 11:35:08

Mind you for charisma, Andy Burnham beats him hands down! grin

Yes, absolutely.

Clearly feeling a bit salty today Wyllow3

I read the report about the posters on the tube and tonight it was possibly fake news in doing my fact checking on this matter I went down a rabbit hole and read a number of articles on Sadiq Khan.
It got me thinking as to how GNetters living/working in London viewed him.

You pointed out in an earlier post there had been three other threads on this matter in as many months.
Is there some quota system I am not aware of?
