I would highly recommend todays “The Rest is Politics” 29/01/25. Podcast

Warning it is grim and chilling

Whitewavemark2 Mon 10-Feb-25 13:47:26

What civil service jobs are those?

I suspect that anyone let go will be on a temporary contract.

ronib Mon 10-Feb-25 14:09:22

Historically the Uk civil service has made permanent civil servants redundant. It’s not unheard of. Temporary workers are not given the same protections.

Which department has made permanent civil servants redundant?

And those permanent civil servants being made redundant recently?

ronib Mon 10-Feb-25 14:17:42

Wwm2 why do you find this hard to understand? Also being made redundant can lead to improved outcomes.

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 10-Feb-25 14:29:57

David49, that was not my experience of white South Africans.

Wyllow3 Mon 10-Feb-25 14:35:43

It's the scale of the lay-offs but surely our concerns about the services affected by sudden closures with no plans in place.

btw - worth keeping an eye open to what will happen to hate crimes, currently investigated and prosecuted by either/both individual states or the FBI.
In a country where the KKK is waking up it's important not to turn the clock back. Remember, this is an administration that is currently welcoming white only South Africans.

ronib the UK has never made public sector redundancies with no notice, no consultation, or closed down whole sectors of service provision with no alternatives, leaving both workers and clients in state of chaos and for clients, harm. If you can’t see the difference between that and what is now happening in the USA, I despair.

ronib Mon 10-Feb-25 14:57:12

Casdon a touch dramatic? I don’t agree that any country should continue to pay billions in so called aid especially if this enables Ukraine to have so many young men die. In any event, other major economies apart from the USA can start to contribute to developing countries as they wish. Or not.

Churchview Mon 10-Feb-25 15:11:59

It's not 'so called aid' Ronib, it's aid.

Aid is spent on many things, including the management of serious disease that could become pandemic (ebola), on research and other causes beneficial to the donating country.

Most other major economies do already contribute to developing countries.

ronib Mon 10-Feb-25 15:21:28

Around 69.2 billion dollars to Ukraine from USA in military assistance is quoted online. If the new administration does not want to spend in this way, that’s perfectly reasonable in my view.

I don’t find what you are saying hard to understand.

It is just that I think that you have your facts wrong.

But I am willing to stand corrected if you tell me which department and when full time civil servants were made redundant

Wwm2 Under Michael Heseltine, CCTA was effectively closed down from around 1996 to 2000 for example.

www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/02/06/what-the-data-says-about-us-foreign-aid/

This article shows what the aid budget is spent on.

The problems is that it includes both military and humanitarian aid,

but they are not taking the trouble to pick out the desperately needed genuine humanitarian aid and keep that funding. They've just wiped it out

Facts on Trump federal job cut - Forbes, reliable source.

www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2025/02/07/at-least-65000-workers-accept-trumps-buyout-now-the-biggest-job-cut-in-us-history/

2 million government workers are potentially affected, plus there are already knock on effects in the private sector of thousands of jobs relating to the federal departments they served

The majority of that aid was in the form of weapons of war thatb
the US was replacing for newer versions. Not cold hard cash.

Not dramatic in any way ronib, just a description of exactly what is different about what is happening in the USA at the moment. You changing tack to talk about aid doesn’t alter what is happening to state employees in all sectors, this is not just about overseas aid.

We really should not underestimate the financial power of Trump and the US. Europe was rebuilt after WW2 and rearmed for the Cold War. Compared with that rebuilding Gaza is straightforward.
He can also make it very difficult for countries that rely on US aid and military support.

An agency is not the civil service.

I guessed that you had muddled it.

But no matter, easily done.

I am not sure if any of you follow American Football, but the big game was yesterday. I didn't watch it, but I did tune in on the half time show.

If any of you are looking for 15 minutes of serving up civil disobedience straight to Trumps face, because the US taxpayers spent and estimated $20 million for him to be there, you should Google the Kendrick Lamar half time show.
