If you watch the video, you can see the scarcely hidden amusement on the face of the side on the right of the picture as Trump talks about how paper straws explode.

That poor man trying to stifle his laughter. grin

Just don't use a s*dding straw at all!!
Who needs a straw of any kind?

(Sorry for expletive)

”Trump is now putting forward a law to disenfranchise married women. If they have changed their name from their birth name, they won't be eligible to vote. It has been suggested that their husband will vote for them. Welcome to Atwood's future”

What!

I’d be joining you out on the streets Casdon.

Surely the women of America will protest!

ronib Tue 11-Feb-25 20:02:54

Has Trump asked Melania about this policy initiative? Not to forget Michelle. The female voice needs to be heard. Is this even real?

boheminan Tue 11-Feb-25 20:09:33

I've been following this thread with a foreboding feeling but my stomach lurched at LizzieDrips latest thread.

Surely this can't be true??? (not calling you a liar LizzieDrip) if it is so, then it won't be just the women in America protesting.

I wonder what Ivanka and Tiffany think about this?

Is this the act we are referring to re people disenfranchised

www.americanprogress.org/article/the-save-act-overview-and-facts/

The SAVE Act
The SAVE Act would require all Americans to prove their citizenship with documentation unavailable to millions and upend the way every American citizen registers to vote.

Not sure I've fully grasped what it means as on the surface it disadvantages Republicans except for the confusion over REAL ID's and requires a lot more commitment to get voting credentials.

LizzieDrip Tue 11-Feb-25 20:40:07

It was Grandmabatty’s post (19.27) that first mentioned this bill regarding married women’s rights. Perhaps she can give us a bit more info about it?

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Feb-25 20:49:05

I think that's the act Wyllow. I saw on twitter where a republican was suggesting that husbands could vote for their wife instead. It was being linked to Project 25. I'll try to find the actual comment

Wyllow3 Tue 11-Feb-25 20:49:43

It is the SAVE bill that I referenced

check this Newsweek reference out

"Married Women Could Be Stopped From Voting Under SAVE Act"

because if you've changed your name, and have no up to date passport, your birth certificate has not got your current name on

under the new voting registration act its not at all clear what other forms of ID are going to be OK (as the article explains)

www.newsweek.com/married-women-stopped-voting-save-act-2029325

Wyllow3 Tue 11-Feb-25 20:54:33

I expect there will be a rush by the bill designer to make sure good republican wives can be registered and the real intention is to narrow down the voting list to cut out those who find it more difficult to register.

LizzieDrip Tue 11-Feb-25 20:58:40

That’s right, it’s the SAVE act.

LizzieDrip Tue 11-Feb-25 21:00:18

Apologies Wyllow - I’ve just posted the same link that you’ve already posted.

Great minds…smile

David49 Tue 11-Feb-25 21:03:18

Do you think Trump is expecting married women to register withe dual names eg :- Hillary Rodham Clinton, it’s quite common to do that these days. If you have a passport you do have to include any other names you have used, what’s the problem registering to vote like that. It is difficult to track women when names change through marriage, it makes it very hard researching family history

Grandmabatty Tue 11-Feb-25 21:03:49

A spokesman from the White House 'Faith' office was going on about being a Christian and the husband's Christian duty etc etc

imaround Tue 11-Feb-25 21:04:19

The SAVE Avt is real and the possible consequences of it are very real.

They are literally erasing women in the US. Removing their accomplishments from government websites, shutting down educational STEM programs specifically for girls because it is DEI.

I was going to bring it up but I was chastised recently for saying they were trying to take away rights of women is false. Something about feminists always saying these things. I am not going back to give it another thought.

Babs03 Tue 11-Feb-25 21:11:05

I feel sick to my stomach about this. But it seems that - as with Gaza - the so called 'free world' is just going to sit and watch this happen. We are going backwards and the rights women fought long and hard for - many of our generation - are about to be snatched away.

imaround Tue 11-Feb-25 21:11:29

There were millions of disenfranchised voters in November. Millions of voters were removed from rolls in mostly Red states. Some states are still fighting in the courts to restrict votes from being counted in state races.

There is a theory that Trump won due to voter suppressions. There is also a theory that Elon hacked the voting machines in swing states.

HousePlantQueen Tue 11-Feb-25 21:12:45

Resounding silence from those GNetters who were shouting that we need Trump here. Any comments? Feeling silly?

LizzieDrip Tue 11-Feb-25 21:15:18

David from the article link posted above:

“Nationwide, approximately 69 million women could not use their birth certificate to prove their identity or citizenship status under the SAVE Act”

If a woman hyphenates her name with her husband’s this married name does not match the name on her birth certificate, so her birth certificate wouldn’t count as identification, under the SAVE act.

Approximately half of all Americans do not hold a valid passport.

Oh they will find a way to step lightly over this and carry on praising Trump. Don't forget is his policy on migrants that sits so well with them, they will apparently forgive all as long as he sends those migrants back to where they came from.
I think they call it tunnel vision.

Groups that are having rights stripped away from them in the US.

LGBTQ+
Minorities
Women

Except I can't bring some of this up on here lest it cause problems. Please do your research And if you want more information on what is happening DM me.

Rula Tue 11-Feb-25 21:22:31

They're really not erasing women.

MaizieD Tue 11-Feb-25 21:22:57

I read about the suspected (?) voter suppression a week or two ago. I hesitated to post a link because it seemed far fetched and sore loserish. But here it is,, people can make up their own minds.

Many disabled people need a straw, paper straws are not strong enough, many folks cannot afford the reusable ones (not sure what they are made of)
