I would highly recommend todays “The Rest is Politics” 29/01/25. Podcast

Warning it is grim and chilling

Casdon no one is buying up any country - it’s laughable.

I hope you don't live in Scotland, ronib!

I imagine, somewhere in America, there are people who said it was laughable to think Musk and his young IT gang would be able to make a hostile takeover of their government.

Truth is often stranger than fiction.

I am thinking that there’s a lot of over dramatisation on N&P today.

Only because, in America, what is totally abnormal is becoming normal.

Has it occurred to you that it might be that you haven’t fully grasped what is happening ronib? If you take the time to read some of the news coming out of the USA you’d understand why the rest of the world (not just Gransnetters) is looking on aghast. CNN is good for coverage.

ronib Wed 12-Feb-25 18:38:52

Casdon and MayBee70 if Trump is able to find some acceptable solutions to Ukraine, it rather makes me feel that the rest of the world was stark raving mad in the first place. So I think a wait and see approach is probably best.

Trump is in cahoots with Putin and has a statement about what a fine man he is

imaround Wed 12-Feb-25 18:45:03

Here is a first hand account of what is happening to the US AID workers that Trump illegally shut down.

The court file is 4 pages, I will do per post.

imaround Wed 12-Feb-25 18:45:22

Hopefully they are in order.

I am thinking that there’s a lot of over dramatisation on N&P today.

But nowhere near some of the sensational, sometimes 'theatrical', and strange observations and comments made by Trump at his rallies.

Trump wants to own Greenland, make Canada the 51st State, etc - these are not our imaginings, he's said so.

What do you think the reaction should be? If you are a Greenlander or Canadian - it probably does feel quite dramatic - especially given Trump's mercurial personality - who knows what he'll come out with next.

Is this your way of shutting down debate? It's a well-known social media tactic of dealing with comments that you don't agree with. "Oh, you seem upset" or "don't you think you're being over-dramatic?"... as opposed to debating what's actually being said.

Trump thinks Greenland should belong to the US - when questioned about military 'involvement', he refused to rule it out.

Both are members of NATO - I think that's pretty dramatic stuff - and would certainly cause some drama.

Re the change of name for the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. I have just read someone saying that it is more sinister than just Trump/Musk being hubristic. There is legislation banning new off shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, but if it isn’t called the Gulf of Mexico, Trump thinks he will be able to drill. With disastrous consequences worldwide for generations! Does anyone have info on this legislation, and whether a change of name for the Gulf would invalidate it?

And now with Putin - Ukraine sad

The start of today's over dramatization.

Tulsi Gabbard has been named Director of National Intelligence by the Republicans.

She has a history of engaging in Russian Propaganda.

(Was wondering about a separate thread in Ukraine - its going to be big - so far we have Hesketh insisting Europe has to pay for the war, or a lot more, and Trump saying its unrealistic to expect a return to 2014 borders - its going to be awful for the Ukrainians).

Thank you for those details imaround - I'd read bits about the horrific treatment of workers and the projects.

ronib Wed 12-Feb-25 18:55:41

I always did think that a very measured response was a good idea Dickens and is anyone taking Trump seriously in his quest to buy out countries? Just because he spouts nonsense doesn’t mean any country will agree. A polite no thank you will do.

There is that rumor that was the reason, but I don't think so. If he was going to ignore Biden's decision he would just do it illegally like he has everything else.

I think this was ego.

Her ignorance and arrogance!

Elegran Wed 12-Feb-25 18:57:57

Read some of the Canadian Fb pages ("Love Canada", for instance) to see the reactions of Canadians to Trumps intentions - and also the posts from the States showing the reactions of 'Murricans. Some of them are essentially "Our military will soon beat your measly defences" so there are plenty of people ready to help Trump with a military take-over if he wants them to. They also say things like "Whoever controls the Gulf (of Mexico) owns the Gulf" The US doesn't have a thumping good war going on anywhere at the moment, so there is an element that is itching to pick up a rifle again and start one.

On google maps (the UK version) it's now written as follows

Gulf of Mexico
(Gulf of America)

😡😡😡

More "newspeak"

imaround Wed 12-Feb-25 18:58:59

You know who is taking his "offers" seriously? Canada, Panama, Greenland and Denmark.

Maybe ronib should call them to tell them a polite no thank you is all that it is needed.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Feb-25 19:02:51

The American International Development programme has millions of people reliant on its help.

Gone at a stroke.

There is going to be so much severe hardship.

ronib Wed 12-Feb-25 19:09:34

Well more fool them iamaround - America just doesn’t have the money to buy up 4 countries surely? What is the going rate?
When dealing with insane people isn’t it better to just quietly say no? Don’t stir the beast?

Casdon Wed 12-Feb-25 19:16:36

Insane people don’t understand a quiet no ronib. They think it’s an ‘I can’t be bothered to fight back, so it’s not important to me, I’ll roll over and let you takes what’s mine’.

ronib Wed 12-Feb-25 19:24:26

Well I can’t remember a time in history when Presidents went around with a shopping list for countries. It does usually take two to agree a deal. NATO might need to step in.

... I'm not sure Trump does "polite" - or diplomacy as we call it.

He appears also not to like being challenged by "bad" people and can become quite personal about them when they do challenge him.
