After playing Wordle, I sometimes try to play Connections. It struck me that some connections were very culturally biased and not easy for a non American to understand. Best leave America and Trump as much as possible to plough their own furrow- we don’t have many options ? The UK is not in any position to challenge Trump?

Many of us have relatives in USA and I don't think that leaving them to it should be an option.
The more we continue to examine the detail of the political situation from a distance, the more support it will be to the good people of America to challenge Trump.

This is the one that got me:
"He orchestrated a coup. It failed.
He was a convicted felon.
He rose to power on a wave of divisive propaganda and hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric.
He promised to make things great again.
He threatened to annex his neighbors.
I'm referring, of course, to Adolf Hitler."

What Trump is doing just now is attempting to claim that the tragic plane crash was caused by Biden's diversity policies.

Claremont Thu 30-Jan-25 18:16:29

Just unbelievable.

And people on this forum admire him!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 30-Jan-25 18:18:14

It’s the immigrants what caused it!

J52 Thu 30-Jan-25 18:18:43

It is disgraceful and disrespectful of those who have perished

Exactly.
My DF perished in an air crash. It's a dreadful thing.

Maybe it was?

This from BBC news.

In his remarks, he referenced the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) hiring of people with "severe intellectual" disabilities and other mental or physical issues.
A website for the FAA's diversity and inclusion hiring programme appears to have been taken down in December.
An archived version of the site, however, shows that the FAA was seeking people with "targeted disabilities" that the federal government was prioritising for recruitment at the time.
The website specifically referenced hearing and vision issues, as well as "missing extremities, partial paralysis, completely paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism".

Would you want a hard of hearing, short sighted, dwarf guiding your plane in?

The first trump presidency was a nightmare. He did some ridiculous stuff but there was always that feeling that behind the scenes he wouldn’t be allowed to go over the top - until January 6 of course. This time though, it is a whole different ballgame. I know most of us on these boards are not American, but we can watch the unfolding horror from afar and pray that things won’t be as bad as a lot of people think. It is particularly worrying that he is trying to surround himself with MAGA people and sacking (or simply not hiring) those not on his wave length.

Maybe in two years time, at the midterm elections (if they happen!) things may change as the electorate realise what a mistake they’ve made.

Here is the CNN report. He had absolutely no evidence to say what he did. He is actually described as unhinged.

Whatever the personal views and actual facts are, this is not the time to make insensitive remarks and a Head of State should know that.

Babs03 Thu 30-Jan-25 18:51:50

For Trump to assert that the tragic air accident was caused by people with disabilities and dwarfism is offensive to people with disabilities and dwarfism and totally lacking in any kind of sensitivity for the loved ones of those killed, as well as being incomprehensible and weird.
Is another 'we have been paying for condoms for Hamas' moment.
The man is off the scale right now.

*Rula^

The Western world is embracing Trump. The leaders are falling over themselves to suck up to him

Are they?

I think you'll find they're hedging their bets and indulging in polite political diplomatic protocol

He won. And that's all there is to it

Maybe in your world.

We haven't had a major incident in 16 years of "DEI hiring".

In 1 week he has:

January 20: FAA director fired
January 21: Air Traffic Controller hiring frozen
January 22: Aviation Safety Advisory Committee disbanded
January 28: Buyout/retirement demand sent to existing employees
January 29: First American mid-air collision in 16 years

Thanks imaround, the thing is that Trump's supporters don't seem to look for the 'details' all they do is follow the banner, happy to hear what they want to hear and to hell with the reality of the situation.
In a nutshell - rampant populism.

Wyllow3 Thu 30-Jan-25 19:03:46

He should wait for the results of the inquiry, before opening his unhinged and quite hateful remarks.

The FAA will has a whole number of different work roles. those guiding planes in only being one of the functions.

DEI doesnt mean that people unfit for the job get work, they have to meet the required standards, did you not know that, Kandinsky?

As regards your last sentence, why should not someone with dwarfism competently guide a plane in?

Even Trump has surpassed himself on this one. I hope there's a strong reaction.

imaround Thu 30-Jan-25 19:11:09

10 years of Trump in the US Babs, I have learned 1 thing. They do not want to see truth. I don't typically even engage with MAGA any longer. They will learn when it starts to affect them, not a moment sooner.

I will say, though, it is starting to affect them already. Lots of antidotes and stories of how Trump voters are already being affected.

They need to buckle up because it is going to get worse for everyone.

MayBee70 Thu 30-Jan-25 19:12:14

Good grief, I’ve only just heard this. A friend of mine suffers from achondroplasia. They suffer enough persecution as it is sad. How many more people will this sadistic man aim his vitriol at.

imaround Thu 30-Jan-25 19:16:21

Not sure there are many left he hasn't Maybee

He has already targeted migrants, transgender, women, disabled and minorities.

Allsorts Thu 30-Jan-25 19:18:43

What a pathetic human being. It is despicable and unheard of to show no respect for the victims and families going through immeasurable heartbeat. Shame on him.

Allsorts Thu 30-Jan-25 19:19:23

Apologies heartbreak and not heartbeat.

I did wonder about the firing but wasn't sure the FAA was part of the targeted groups.

Perfectly clear now!

Trump causes major air crash

Wyllow3 Thu 30-Jan-25 19:23:30

Surely there is a decent significant Republican who will call him out on this?
