How much will it cost, when will it be completed and can we expect it to solve the Social Care crisis, eliminate Fiscal Drag by increasing the personal tax allowance, fix a badly fractured NHS, deal with escalating knife crime, etc, etc.

Well, Rachel from Accounts? Is this your idea of a Magic Bullet? And will it save your career when Keir decides it's time for a Cabinet re-shuffle?

Calendargirl I totally agree.

Trades people have so much earning potential also.

I appreciate that money isn’t everything, but it should be taken into consideration when making career decisions.

Mamie the proverbial elephant in the room is of course that the UK is sadly lacking skilled workers.

If all these projects go ahead I assume the companies involved will have to advertise jobs abroad to fill the vacancies.

(A large proportion of our business is construction related, and it is a huge problem, electricians, engineers, brick layers, plumbers etc., all in short supply. The youngsters are not interested in the construction industry)

Yes I am sure that is true and workers will have to be recruited from overseas. The failure of successive governments to sort vocational education is appalling.

Remember the population is due to rise significantly and some of us have not understood why reservoirs have not been dug before now. Oh yes, we were all meant to save water and reservoirs were not needed. Now they are. Fascinating.

Our water South Midlands comes directly out of the Severn where there is ample flow year round what is needed is proper water grid to use that water to supply the South East, along with stopping leaks of course.

If you were right David, your water supply would already be serving Birmingham instead of Wales doing so. I know, we could just get rid of Wales and make it one big reservoir.

Birmingham is served by the Elan Valley dams that flows entirely by gravity, those dams have a limited catchment area the flow in the Severn is hundreds of times that.
Locally water was formerly pumped from local rivers but that didn’t meet EU standards so an alternative was found - the Severn, the downside is that it has to be pumped, that’s expensive.

I'm not necessarily in favour but by the time it's built there'll be a very different world with different types of aircraft using different fuel... If it was being built with current aviation in mind I'd seriously object - have lived under the flight path - but it's not, I'm assuming. Things may be very unrecognizable by the time it's built.

I might be completely wrong, but I’d guess that the massive further expansion at East Midlands parkway, which is at the airport/M1/M42 junction announced yesterday has something to do with the reopening of Doncaster. They aren’t far apart, and it would be quite feasible to use Doncaster for more freight, as both airports have only one runway.

EMA a massive freight hub for DHL maybe another carrier wants to use Doncaster

yrhengastan62 Thu 30-Jan-25 13:29:33

Sitting here in South Wales I can't even begin to imagine how this, or any of her other announcements, is going to benefit anyone here. I'm sure those in the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland feel the same.

Marg75 Thu 30-Jan-25 13:42:44

Rachel who? Oh, sorry, the Chancellor, I thought it was a best friend!

Not just DHL, and it’s a very busy regional airport for passengers too because it serves three cities. I’ve seen the development between the M1/M42, work appears to be ongoing there, so Doncaster’s capacity will be needed I would assume.

I don't get why a lot of her speech yesterday was about the wonderful new speed up travel between Oxford and Cambridge Thought they were upper middle class places with a lot going for them and don't most of the upper middle class have cars anyway Some improvement to trains in the North like getting trains running on Sundays again would have been good

Barleyfields Thu 30-Jan-25 15:10:56

She was talking about connecting Oxford and Cambridge because of all the new technology companies in both cities. Nothing to do with any upper middle class (or otherwise) people living there. Improvements to train links in the north were also announced. Did you listen to the speech?

Maybe more efficient, quieter less polluting, different no, they need to be aerodynamic and need a runway to take off, any changes will be how we use air travel.
We really should use air travel less and reduce CO2 my guess is we won’t.

Living in the North, the improved rail links are very welcome indeed and wont take forever. Its a 👏

Cambia Thu 30-Jan-25 16:07:33

How about more airports in the north instead of more in London! Don’t see how this us going to help growth just more money wasted on consultants and quangos, where are the new hospitals that were promised!

Barleyfields Thu 30-Jan-25 16:17:30

There is no suggestion of ’more airports’ in London, but the expansion of an existing one. Where in the north do you consider a new airport would assist the growth of the economy Cambia?

orly Thu 30-Jan-25 16:17:50

...and she's advocating killing newts and bats as well.

TakeThat7 Thu 30-Jan-25 16:29:35

Need big improvements with trains in the north the number of trains regularly cancelled is making train travel so you wonder if it's worth using

Barleyfields Thu 30-Jan-25 16:33:49

That’s down to the the train companies, not lack of infrastructure - and Labour’s failure to negotiate service improvements when giving train drivers what they wanted.

RSALLAN2002 Thu 30-Jan-25 16:36:08

No problem. Boris Johnson said he would lie down in front of the bulldozers. In relation to the air disaster in Washington today, someone said Regan Airport has only 2 runways making it risky. It has a lot less traffic than Heathrow. Apparently, many USA airports have 3, 4 ot 5 runways.

TakeThat7 Thu 30-Jan-25 16:39:25

Ok I admit I probably missed some of her speech Hope she mentioned things like means testing for having to pay TV licence Improving reliability of trains on the Avanti run to help hospitality and businesses and paid work for maybe people with special needs or social anxiety such as picking up all the cans and plastic bottles in the parks and countryside They far outnumber the trees round here And couldn't the metal or plastic be recycle d into park benches and benches in town centres

I lived in West London for nearly 40 years, when the children were growing up, they were asthmatic, one had permanent glue ear. Our GP told us that was a common problem with children in the area, combined fumes from M25 and Heathrow. It's going to be a lot worse then.

That’s awful. It’s as if no thought is ever given to the environment or people’s health.

pascal30 Thu 30-Jan-25 17:37:37

Apparently the runway wouldn't be completed until 2050 so it's hardly going to improve our economy.. Plus there are loads of backbenchers against it (for ecological reasons) and there are loads of legal loopholes to get through.. but it will involve moving part of the M25 and destroying 2 villages (10.000) homes.. So I really hope it doesn't happen

Barleyfields Thu 30-Jan-25 17:56:42

Reeves reckons it will be operational within ten years. Cloud cuckoo land. There are much more important things to concentrate on.

Calendargirl Thu 30-Jan-25 21:36:19

2050?

Well, none of us will be using it then.
