Where is the celebration?

Brexit - 5 years old today.

There is a huge paucity of benefits and silence in the Brexit ranks.

A bit of a diversion from this thread but currently Barclays Bank is not able to process transfers and payments. Property transfers failed yesterday and removal vans have been left unloaded. Clearly not to do with Brexit? I can’t imagine how a major bank made such a mess of banking. It does make me wonder how the Uk is coping in general.

Well Trump is not . If someone is going to without good sense support him then I don’t need to support it with false politeness . He is now destroying the USA , its laws and constitutions to have someone praise him for this and wish the same for the UK ???

Well, you could counter it with valid arguments instead of making personal attacks, perhaps?

Such language just invalidates anything you may say and stops others taking your posts seriously.

Kandinsky Sat 01-Feb-25 10:26:42

Even the thread title is confrontational and goady.

‘Where is the celebration?’

Not, ‘We officially left the EU 5 years ago, what are your thoughts 5 years on?’

Not sure how many people would have know it was 5 years ago ( not many I’m sure ) it feels like a million years ago to me.

TerriBull excellent post 👏👏👏

I haven't seen any Union flags festooned around nor any street parties!
Some of my friends and neighbours did vote to leave but I can't call them thickos or even jingoistic. They are not. I notice that family members voted differently from each other but they seem to have put that behind them too.
Not once have I heard Brexit mentioned or argued about when we have had gatherings since then. Other major events have taken priority.

It's all part of history's rich tapestry and will merit a few paragraphs in the history books for our descendants.

I did vote remain btw!

Brexit was a total disaster and will continue to be
Totally wrong how it was handled from start to finish and those voting for it are not now accepting that many more now realise the disaster it is
We have split from Europe and now have a ‘best friend’ who is a dangerous idiot instead 😢

This is exactly what FGT does all the time but I don’t see you calling her out for this .

But posters do, hadn’t you noticed?

I voted to leave. I am neither a "thicko", nor "deranged", nor uneducated, nor working class.

I listened carefully to politicians, (far more erudite and knowledgeable than people on this thread), who argued to leave.
We had also lived abroad many years, and we had seen first hand how laws were made without the common interest at heart. Often they were not adhered to anyway.
Members of our family would have been more than happy to vote remain if we could have had a Federal Europe.

Very seriously though, my life has seen no real difference since Brexit other than a few niggly formalities. The same for my children. Obviously I can't say whether things would have been better for any of us if we had remained, so to suggest any form of celebrating seems very shallow. I can't remember which famous writer it was, maybe Dickens, who spoke about going round the mulberry bush leading nowhere. These discussions usually only end up back at their starting place, any excuse to ridicule posters' choices, or worse still, to launch personal attacks.

Well said, escaped.

Going round the mulberry bush - an endless argument which goes nowhere. A perfect valid statement under the circumstances and yes, sorry to say so, Whitewave but the premise of the OP was a tad goady. But you know that 🙂

I hadn't noticed Friedgreentomatoes calling other posters names or questioning their intelligence or even sanity. I may be wrong.

If you resort to name-calling you lose your argument.

FGT does not issue personal insults, nor does she repeatedly demand for others to justify themselves. Disagree with her politics by all means (I frequently do) but I think posters should keep the naked aggression and personal attacks out of it.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 01-Feb-25 11:50:13

I joined GN after the EU referendum.

In the seven and half years I have been here the leave/remain (argument) discussion has been going on relentlessly.

Name calling will not help or alter the situation, it’s like flipping groundhog day hence my comment about the hamster wheel, going round and round but not getting anywhere.

Faierynan Sat 01-Feb-25 11:55:29

Comments like "most people." Who are these "most people"
Every body I know who voted for it are glad they did

What I posted to TerriBull i also say to you.
Thank you 👏👏👏👏👏
It means a lot to those of us who were insulted and ridiculed for using our democratic right.

”This is exactly what FGT does all the time but I don’t see you calling her out for this”

Syracute I understand how you feel - it’s annoying isn’t it.

Here are some recent put downs used by FGT (there are many more but life’s too short to find them):

“Tosh”
“Hyperbolic nonsense”
“Oh give it a rest”

Apparently it’s OK to post these commentssmile

AGAA4 Sat 01-Feb-25 12:03:12

The Brexit discussion keeps coming up on GN ever since I joined six years ago.
It's a war between Remainers and Leavers that can never be won. The deed is done. We have left the EU and have to face all that leaving entails but we know that in the long run none of us have 'won'.

escaped Sat 01-Feb-25 12:04:19

They're not personal put downs, LizzieDrip. They are exasperated exclamations which we all use.

Yes it is. They’re not personal attacks so within the rules. If they were breaking GN talk guidelines they would have been deleted and you wouldn’t have been able to go looking for them!

GrannyGravy13 Sat 01-Feb-25 12:12:59

Please, this is getting too personal now.

FGT2 doesn’t insult posters, she does disagree with posts which differ in prospective to her views.

This is becoming increasingly more like bullying than debate.
