All Saints Catholic high school. A 14 year old boy stabbed the 15 year old at the school gates. Two truly devastated families. One boy dead, not coming home from school with his mates at 4pm now and I imagine the 14 year old lad terrified, sobbing his eyes out in a police station, as the enormity of his red mist action hammers home to him. Arrested on suspicion of murder.

A relatively small point but yearsnago when I lived abroad any child who commited a crime under the age of 18 had to be accompanied to court by their parents. No if or buts the parent stood alongside the child and was questioned about their supervision, parenting methods etc.
Went some way I think to ensuring that parents took responsibility for their children.

What a good idea.

I support stop & search as an emergency measure, given how many young people have died.
Surely among the copious "paperwork" police officers do nowadays there are their "stop & search" records? I would be suprised if they didn't have to record ethnicity, but for this info to be useful (eg are there particular officers disproportionately stopping black boys?) the searchee would have to give the info, & they can refuse.

"there were 24.5 stop and searches for every 1,000 black people, and 5.9 for every 1,000 white people"
The above information was from gov.co.uk, so no I will not support stop and search, these figures show racial profiling and unfairness.

So you’re happy to see kids carrying knives and stabbing one another then, rather than cause upset. I hope you can live with that.

Absolute bullshit, I am not happy for any young person to be killed, if anyone regardless of age or ethnicity is found to have a knife they should be punished.
What I do not like is the Police having powers to stop and search anyone, as the stats show black youth will be disproportionately targeted.

I can live with myself thankyou, oh and my partner has seen where black kids have been unfairly targeted.
What I could not live with is your ignorance on racism.

And if they address that imbalance, how would you feel about stop and search then? Perhaps using a metal detecting device.

I support stop and search but racism within the police force needs to be adressed once and for all.

rafichagran Tue 04-Feb-25 23:41:30

*Allira, if that was to happen, I would not feel like I do, but as MissAdventure states racism needs to be addressed once and for all. I am sorry I don't feel that would happen anytime soon, so no I do not support it.

The Police can stop and search anyway if they believe that a crime has been committed.

Well the good kids have nothing to worry about do they?
I’d rather stop 500 kids randomly, maybe find 5 zombie knives than have one more dead child. And dead children come in all colours.

Well why don't they stop 500 white kids? White kids carry knives, white kids die and white kids kill. If you want to reduce knife crime with stop and search then search them all.

We have to be realistic about how much the police can do. Operate checks at all schools? stop and search thousands? Just recently GN decided that not enough police resources were being spent on child abuse/gangs/follow ups with SSD on individual children at risk.
Reality is they can only act in a targeted way.

I worry about my grandchildren’s route to school. They have to walk via a park (or take a much longer way which would put 20 minutes on their walk).

At least 400 children aged 11 -18 walk this path twice a day. In 2024 there was a machete attack and three bikes stolen by a local gang. No one was stabbed luckily just threatened but one pupil fought back and suffered a broken risk. The West Midlands where we live is a hot bed of knife crime.

Parents have asked for a CCTV camera to cover the area. The District Council says it’s not needed. This is the attitude that makes me mad.

CCTV cameras sounds a great idea. I hope the parents keep pressing for them.
