Farage. Well he’s Top of the Pops right now! 😂

(502 Posts)
FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 06-Feb-25 20:59:23

This tonight, from the ‘i’ newspaper (that I also now subscribe to, not just The Telegraph!)
.

“Nigel Farage stood up at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday to hostile silence. Squashed together in the Commons, MPs from other parties glowered at him, and then delighted as he appeared to fluff his lines when asking a question about the Chagos Islands.

Behind the scenes it is a different story, with individual MPs from other parties queuing up to ask the Reform UK leader to sign House of Commons wine bottles and drinks coasters for family members and constituents who are fans of his brand of straight-talking populism. It’s not clear whether those MPs acknowledge the cognitive dissonance involved.

There’s no doubt Reform is having a moment. On average, the last half-dozen polls have put the party on 25 per cent, putting it equal first with Labour. Three of those polls put the party in the lead, either solely or in tandem with Labour.

It’s causing tangible jitters among both Labour and Conservative MPs. At PMQs, Farage accused them of “panic.”

This week a group of around 40 Labour MPs from “Red Wall” seats in the north of England called for Sir Keir Starmer to send a stronger message on immigration as they seek to see off the threat from Farage and his crew ahead of local elections in May.

Behind the scenes, other Labour MPs have requested training sessions from No 10 on how to deal with Reform in their areas. “It really troubles them,” a Labour source said.”

C’mon REFORM!

Don't think they will vote for him again in Clacton. They have not seen much of him at all, but they were very surprised to learn about his voting record on workers' rights

I did read your post, yes the Civil
Service should be impartial, I agree, but there is a difference between should and are. I thought during the struggle to implement Brexit, they impeded the process, although that was just by it being reported in some newspapers.

Neither he nor his other MPs bothered to attend the debate in the House about Border Control.

... I'd imagine more so than "professionals from the private sector".

There may be bias - but in the private sector, there is also vested interests...

Yes.

It must be very frustrating to be a top career civil servant and to have your experience and advice to Ministers overridden constantly by SPADs.

I think it's about time Farage was pressed to give an opinion on actual Trump/Musk policies so we know where we stand in th UK.

Reform policy states

"Reform does not specify areas for departmental spending cuts, but insists the public should not face deteriorating services as a result of the savings. It suggests that part of the party's efficiency drive will come from replacing civil service leaders with successful professionals from the private sector, who are political appointees, who come and go with the government

www.civilserviceworld.com/professions/article/farage-floats-plans-to-slash-50bn-from-departments-and-cut-taxes

That sounds like a good idea, more efficient.

It's not a good idea.

Civil service leaders should not be political appointees.
The Civil Service proper should be independent of politics and should remain so. They are employees of the Crown, impartial and carry out the policies of the government of the day, whichever party is in power.
They are public servants, accountable to the public.

SPADS (Special Advisers) are political appointees and the government usually has a team of those but they are just temporary civil servants. Some try to abuse their power as we have seen in recent years with SPADS of both parties.

Farage's suggestion is worrying.

Getting the UK out of the EHRC would be a good idea too. Is the Civil .service impartial?

Replacing in house chief executives in the NHS with successful leaders from the private sector was tried in the 1980s. It was an unmitigated disaster.

Good post, Dickens. More from the odious Yenor in this piece:

www.wusf.org/education/2025-01-09/desantis-appointee-to-university-board-says-women-should-become-mothers-not-pursue-higher-ed

Speaking at the National Conservatism Conference in 2021, Yenor detailed what he sees as the “evils” of feminism, labeled “independent women” as “medicated, meddlesome and quarrelsome” and decried colleges and universities as "the citadels of our gynecocracy” — a form of government run by women.

“If we want a great nation, we should be preparing young women to become mothers,” Yenor said, "not finding every reason for young women to delay motherhood until they are established in a career or sufficiently independent.”

Yenor argued that higher education “delays growing up,” saying that college and universities are “indoctrination camps” that society should de-emphasize in order to make progress on “family matters.”

“Every effort must be made not to recruit women into engineering, but rather to recruit and demand more of men who become engineers. Ditto for med school and the law and every trade,” Yenor said.

In articles and speeches, Yenor has labeled DEI as a “grave and gathering danger to national unity and state governance," called for eliminating certain disciplines like African Diaspora Studies and said even departments of History and English could be on the chopping block.

This is Margaret Atwood’s dystopian Gilead approaching, isn’t it? No education, no jobs, no money. What else is there to do but rely on men for support and have their babies?

The comment about nappies? Not conspiracy theory but the smell not only of American’s drive to up the birthrate but of Reform’s James McMurdock behind the sales idea. He is doing his bit towards growing the population. When his conviction for kicking a young woman came up again recently, Tice defending him saying Mrs McMurdock had just had another baby. Why the two things should be conflated, as if fathering numerous children somehow mitigates a violent attack on a young woman, is anybody's guess. When McMurdock was elected last July he was decribed as a father of four so that’s five now.

Byline Times exposed McMurdock’s involvement in a number of failed companies one of which was Bulk Buy Shared Limited. No accounts were ever submitted and the company was struck off. I’m guessing it was something along the lines of WeSave that Farage is now promoting.

It does beg the question - what will the menz do when women resist - as surely great swathes of them will?

Can you imagine the judiciary and all its offices, the medical profession - controlled and run by men only, making decisions on women's legal rights, healthcare? Because if women are reduced to a basic education only, their roles will be inferior to the men's.

I suppose the growing number of 'Trad' wives will be OK with this but the genie is out of the bottle now and the rest of us won't be.

I think it's nightmarish - what I don't understand is why Trump's and Farage's supporters can't see where this might lead - for women.

What happens when women are not allowed to carry on in these professions? Only 38% of doctors in the US are women but that is a considerable number. I think over 50% of lawyers are women.

And yet so many women voted for Trump, something that I will never understand confused.

MaizieD Wed 12-Feb-25 15:12:49

It strikes me that the Reform vision of women's place, which they seem to be leaning towards, has similarities to the vision of Islamic views of women that Reform voters are convinced is accurate and are terrified they'll take over the UK...

Perhaps it's fine when imposed by white males, but not so good imposed by brown ones...hmm

Why in the world would a woman want to wake up to a flat-capped gurning racist who stinks of stale beer and fags?

I reckon that Purdy and Figg (or Dior) have missed a trick. Not Eau Sauvage but Eau Farage to fragrance the headboard. Nige is, of course, available for advertising.

Love that! Eau Farage, with the scent of stale beer, fags...and disappointment, and gentle notes of bu&&sh&t

Perfect for the man who wants to impress, wants to patronise, wants to suck up to presidents.

However, I am a woman, so might not be his target audience for the performance.
He does think that women love him, of course.
Last year, he offered, for a small sum, to ring a mother on Mothering Sunday, to wish her a happy day, as he was, in his own words " the mum's favourite " to wake up to.
