This has been confirmed today after the tower has been found to be unsafe.

Nevertheless the news has produced mixed feelings from local residents.

The only safe thing to do, but with a fabulous memorial to replace it.

What is shocking and utterly disgusting, is that the enquiry has never made anyone accountable- and so many are responsible, at so many levels. And compensation has been ridiculously low.

Many still waiting for justice. There should be a fitting memorial but no amount of artwork will compensate for the way these people have been treated and disregarded...

I know many felt that the building shoud stay as a reminder of the injustice of it all and I hope whatever replaces it will reflect the anger people still feel...

Good.
it is morbid to keep such a dangerous building as a memorial.
Ground Zero was cleared within a year.

JenniferEccles Fri 07-Feb-25 17:49:22

I agree eazybee
I have long thought it was morbid to keep the site of so many deaths.

A beautiful garden would be more fitting in my opinion.

I imagine it poses a threat to safety.. What esle could they do with it really...

Smileless2012 Fri 07-Feb-25 17:54:13

It's unsafe and needs to come down.

I would have thought it better to have something peaceful and beautiful where people can go to think of those they lost, rather than something to reflect anger keepingquiet.

Totally agree.
I am sure the will be a beautiful memorial for these lost souls. Just like they did in NYC with the awful event with the Twin Towers.

I too thought it macabre to keep it standing. A memorial garden with benches , plants and a plaque would be kinder I think.

It will be dismantled very slowly I think as surrounding buildings need to be taken into consideration. No ‘Fred Dibnah’ spectacular is planned.

Mt61 Fri 07-Feb-25 18:18:53

It should have been levelled in the first place, replaced with a nice park/ memorial. It must be harrowing for the people who lived there, or to have witnessed that fire, to have that building in plain sight.

Grandma70s Fri 07-Feb-25 18:32:12

I passed it not long after the tragedy, and felt it was a very sinister reminder. I was glad I didn’t have to look at it every day.

Wyllow3 Fri 07-Feb-25 18:36:20

Survivors had strong mixed feelings, perhaps why its taken the time it has

Far more sensible to replace it with new homes, better built to high standards for local residents.
Or allotments for residents to grow food.
Something productive and useful.

lixy Fri 07-Feb-25 18:55:45

I agree that it should be taken down but many properties still have unsafe cladding. While it stands it is a strong reminder that there is still work to do to keep people safe.

The memorial at the twin towers is austere, not a pretty garden but a strong monument. Everyone who was there when I was last year was silent and subdued; a very thought- provoking place.

I thought it was safe up to the 10th floor (or thereabouts)...

May be wrong.

NotSpaghetti Fri 07-Feb-25 19:05:45

I heard a survivor on the radio say that many survivors and beteaved want it "lowered" rather than demolished.

NotSpaghetti Fri 07-Feb-25 19:06:02

*bereaved

JenniferEccles Fri 07-Feb-25 19:24:55

I did initially think it should have been demolished years ago but the authorities were gathering evidence to try to prove who or what was responsible.

Anniebach Fri 07-Feb-25 21:06:50

I hope they won’t have to pay towards removal as we in Aberfan had to

Claremont Fri 07-Feb-25 21:09:00

I didn't know that Annie. How dreadful and inhumane.

M0nica Fri 07-Feb-25 22:05:03

It needs to come down. However tragic the fire and the deaths were, we all must gradually move on after tragedy strikes us, and keeping the ruins of this block looming over the neighbourhood, must make moving on with life very difficult. By moving on I do not mean forgetting, or mourning the less for those who have left.

If you have read Charles Dickens Great Expectations you will remember Miss Haversham who was jilted at the altar and spent the rest of her life wandering round her house alone, still wearing her wedding dress, with the bridal garlands still up and the wedding reception still laid out, mourning her loss and doing nothing else. What a wasted life. I think Grenfell Tower is a modern equivalent of the wedding breakfast. It needs to be demolished, the site turned into a garden and those that mourn can see the hope of flowers growing in an area blighted by death and destruction for so long.

Anniebach Fri 07-Feb-25 22:10:19

My uncle failed to move on, his wife, and 2 sons died and his house was rumble

Great Expectations was fiction

maddyone Fri 07-Feb-25 22:11:26

It’s morbid to keep it there, as a horrible reminder of that dreadful night. And horrible for people living in the houses around it, having to look at it every day.
A memorial garden would be much more fitting, where people can go and quietly reflect.

Anniebach Fri 07-Feb-25 22:13:34

It cannot be left standing, what of the costs to keep it safe from
