Moving Away From Amazon

The more I hear about Bezos and his links to Trump the more I feel that spending money on Amazon is just morally wrong but it's hard to cut the ties. Amazon is a very easy experience and I've been using it for years but today I bit the bullet and started dismantling the ties. I'm ordering directly from companies, shopping locally or using eBay where suitable. My Kindle is pretty old school so I'm upgrading to a Kobo ereader so I can cancel Audible and eventually Prime. It takes a bit of effort but it feels good, I know my small effort won't touch a billionaire like Bezos but we each have to make our choices and this is one of mine, if millions of us did it then it would hurt his business. I also dumped Twitter when Trump won the election which was also hard as I loved Twitter but now I don't miss it at all. My final act of resistance for today was installing DuckDuckGo as my browser to stop Google tracking everything. Some way to go but life feels a little cleaner now smile

Well done Jane.
I’ve never had Twitter/X but I do use Amazon a lot.

Well done, I need to decide about this too!

This is the reason I have always avoided Amazon. My son is now delivering for them but the company is registered in a different name because they don't want people to know its Amazon.

Other retail sites have always been available. I am glad to read this though. For years when people have told me something is available on Amazon I said, 'I don't do Amazon,' and often get quizzical looks.

I have never used streaming services, including Sky, or bought newspapers. I have never been on Twitter/X.

I am thinking of ways I can get off facebook, but whatsapp are the same company and I use them to keep in touch with family. So any alternatives would be good to hear.

I am also thinking of Duckduckgo too!

Let's get our power back people!

OH has used Amazon a couple of times, but I have never. So no need to move away.

I only use Amazon for my Kindle, which I have had for more years than I can remember, and most of the books I buy, may be about 6 a year, are in the £1 -£2.00 range.

Otherwise I haven't used Amazon for years.

Let's get our power back people!

Sorry but empowerment to me means making life as easy and uncomplicated as possible given my age and the fact that I live on my own.

I don’t know what I’d have done without Amazon during four very difficult years including Lockdown.

EkwaNimitee Sat 08-Feb-25 15:41:13

Me too, merlotgran, it would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face!

Barleyfields Sat 08-Feb-25 15:41:16

I find Amazon far too convenient to stop using them I’m afraid. I don’t live near any shops, they sell everything and it’s usually delivered the next day for no extra charge. As merlotgran said, they make my life much easier.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 08-Feb-25 15:45:19

My mobility is compromised at the moment due to a silly accident, if it wasn’t for Amazon I would be trying to explain to DH what I need and where to purchase from.

I cannot see there being a satisfactory outcome for either of us…

kittylester Sat 08-Feb-25 15:55:53

What merlot says.

Marmin Sat 08-Feb-25 15:56:58

Well done. I installed duckduckgo a few years ago and it is fine.

I can truly see how it can be so useful for some people. Get it, 100%.

But - Lockdown is over, so for most people, not an issue.

and, also- sometimes (and I accept easier for some than others due to circumstances) we can and should put our own wishes aside for a good cause.

I will always remember Ken Loach's film 'sorry I missed you', and the massive pressures put on Amazon and delivery staff- beyond humane.

Cossy Sat 08-Feb-25 16:00:07

Much as I do admire your stance, currently it’s not for me. Amazon and Prime are just too convenient for me to want to give up.

I don’t do X anymore due to Musk, but still have fb/instragram and use WhatsApp daily

Cossy Sat 08-Feb-25 16:01:36

There’s always a plus side, Amazon do treat their staff slightly better now and do provide some people with an additional income stream.

Barleyfields Sat 08-Feb-25 16:03:03

A lot of people don’t drive and have no public transport. A lot of people are housebound. A lot of people have commitments which leave them no time for going to the shops. Do you think that putting Amazon workers out of work would be a good cause?

grandMattie Sat 08-Feb-25 16:06:38

Never used X, and have avoided using Amazon for years and years. I occasionally have no choice, but do it holding my nose!

grandMattie Sat 08-Feb-25 16:07:32

And I don’t have a car. If I can’t get something, unless critical, I do without

Whitewavemark2 Sat 08-Feb-25 16:21:21

Bluesky is a good alternative to X.

And far less unpleasant posts.

Much nicer.

Barleyfields Sat 08-Feb-25 16:25:23

I’m another who has never used Twitter/X.

MaizieD Sat 08-Feb-25 16:33:47

I haven't used Amazon for years. I can purchase anything I want on line from other retailers and get it delivered very quickly, often next day. I don't understand people's utter dependency on one retailer.

I'm weaning myself off twitter, especially as many of the people I followed have moved to bluesky, which, at the moment is altogether less toxic.

I have a facebook account which I don't access very often an rarely post on.

I do love Whatsapp, though 😢

I’m with Coasy here.
As I said, I really admire Jane for making a good effort, but I couldn’t do without Amazon now. I buy things all the time from them, often things that I’d spend ages trailing round different shops to find, or would be much more expensive if bought in a shop. I still go the shops most weeks, but I do rely on Amazon. And there is the point about people losing their jobs if Amazon was put out of business.
The only social media I do is Gransnet and Facebook. I have WhatsApp but I don’t think of it as social media as I only use it for messaging friends and family.

Wheniwasyourage Sat 08-Feb-25 16:45:26

I use Amazon for 2 things; a calendar which I cannot find anywhere else and for looking at the details of books or other things which I then buy from someone (anyone) else because their descriptions are often more detailed than those on other sites.

I've never been tempted to use X (or Twitter) but would miss WhatsApp for keeping in touch with family and friends.

Facebook I use only to find out what is going on around here but I don't have a personal page and don't post.

Changed to DuckDuckGo a while ago and it seems to work fine.

We all have to make our choices!

rockgran Sat 08-Feb-25 16:50:44

I try to avoid Amazon and use Ebay if possible. I prefer to use PayPal and Amazon doesn't accept (as it is a competitor).

B9exchange Sat 08-Feb-25 16:50:49

For me it is anything Meta related with its desire to hoover up my contacts that I won't use. We use Signal instead of Whasapp, and I won't touch Facebook, no desire to post my life online.

A few abstentions is not going to put Amazon out of business, and within a few years it will be drones dropping off your parcels, not the heavily monitored delivery drivers.
