The other filled up very swiftly - so I assume a need for it’s continuation.

I think it’s you who is psychologically invested in the USA ronib, because you keep popping up on every thread where it’s discussed, dissing our government, and telling us not to interfere or express views on what is happening in the USA. Why is that, surely people can have opinions about what’s happening there without being shut down or quizzed about their views?

And I imagine it is safe to say that this particular person will bang on about freedom of expression on other threads.
Funny thing that.

Elegran Mon 24-Feb-25 16:07:27

And if we all think that - there must be truth in the possibility.

I have spent some time typing a reply to Ronib's pos questioning why I am interested in what is happening in the States at the moment, but return to post it and find that several of her posts have been deleted. Have I missed something?

Good news, just hope this cannot be overturned.

I don’t know I didn’t read the posts but got the gist.

Yes it’s quite the mystery Elegran - I am not deleting them ….

This is why I am interested in what is happening in the US at the moment.

What happens in the US has an effect on what happens in the rest of the world, whether we have any connection with the States or no, and what is happening is a revolution.

The ultimate effect of the actions of Trump and Musk could well be the destruction of the mechanism of running the country, the abandonment of the Constitution, and the close-down of governing, for lack of money, of structure, and of trust in those elected to govern. What would happen then could be anything from an election which brings back a president from the Democratic party (but who?) to an offer of a "deal" by President Trump to sort it all out, in exchange for a third term of indeterminate length, or perhaps to an offer from Elon Musk to buy the now worthless real estate, putting his vast wealth into the treasury, plus contributions from other billionaire businessmen in the US and other nations, in return for lifetime chairmanship of US. inc.

OK, that paragraph is conjecture, but can anyone predict that it could never happen? That "it can't happen here" ?

Now, it is possible that Trump and Musk and their supporters can negotiate this revolution successfully and without bloodshed, pass sensible and humane legislation to replace the instruments of government that they are destroying, and guide the USA into being "great again", but the fact remains that the population is deeply divided and hostile.

Of course every thinking person is interested in what is going on, and what ordinary people are doing.

The future's not great. The future's orange.

Interesting, POTUS is well and truly worried to DEI.

The Economist reports POTUS sacks America’s top military brass. The navy chief, the air force second-in-command and military lawyers have all been fired, too.

The first shot against America’s senior military leaders was fired within hours of Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th: General Mark Milley’s portrait was removed from the wall on the E-ring, where it had hung with paintings of other former chairmen of the joint chiefs of staff. A day later the commandant of the coast guard, Admiral Linda Fagan, was thrown overboard.

On February 21st it was the most senior serving officer, General Charles “CQ” Brown, a former F-16 pilot, who was ejected from the Pentagon. At least he was spared a Trumpian farewell insult. “He is a fine gentleman and an outstanding leader,” Mr Trump declared.

Other top brass were cashiered, too, among them Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the chief of naval operations; and General James Slife, the deputy head of the air force. Perhaps even more alarming, given the administration’s trashing of conventions across the federal government, the judge advocates general of the army, navy and air force, were dismissed, too.The sackings have little to do with kindling the “warrior ethos”, which the defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, vows to do. General Brown has clocked more than 3,000 flight hours, including 130 in combat. Admiral Franchetti had commanded not one but two aircraft-carrier strike groups.

Instead they are casualties of the culture wars that the Trump administration is waging against “diversity, equity and inclusion” (DEI). General Brown is the most prominent black military officer; Admirals Fagan and Franchetti were the first women in their jobs.

"A federal judge in Maryland issued a temporary restraining order on Monday, ^[today] blocking members of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency team and anyone “working on the DOGE agenda at the Department of Education” from accessing sensitive data until March 10."^

The italicising went haywire on that post.

Quite worrying, I suppose, for those without any income I wondered what would become of all the forces people he fired, no income?

Perhaps the federal judge can sort it all.

For those who love a laugh with their civil disobedience.

Someone hacked the TVs at the Housing and Urban Development and streamed an AI video of Trump licking Musk's toes.

They couldn't figure out how to turn it off so staffers were running floor to floor unplugging the TVs.

It is childish, yes. But harmless and we need a laugh right now.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Feb-25 18:44:06

A good description of "why" Elegran, I suspect most share it.

imaround, I am childish enough. to find it hilarious....and effective.
In the face of mass bullying humour is often powerful.

Yes - chaotic and thousands must wonder will there be a pay check. But I'm glad that legal action is being pursued, and of course waiting for the budget March 14th drama.

If that was the UK imaround, it would be LedByDonkeys behind it, they have pulled some very effective stunts aimed at pricking the balloons of the pompous.

It is effective Wyllow, because he doesn't like to be seen as anything other than all powerful.

You can see the video if you Google it. I wont post it here.

Babs03 Mon 24-Feb-25 19:08:33

@imaround I think seeing as Trump is so thin skinned when it comes to any kind of criticism that the more civil disobedience takes the form of a joke or prank which aims to mock the POTUS the harder it will hit.
Here’s to more of the same.
🤣

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 24-Feb-25 19:46:55

Norah, I share your anxiety about the fate of those summarily sacked by Mr Musk. It seems that many may not be eligible for any severance pay.
A significant number of people suddenly with no income, and no ability to spend, will have a very negative effect on the economy.
The story of the prank re Mr Trump and Mr Musk, however, did have a very positive effect on my mood!

This video is a good example of how Republicans are being received when they return to their districts from Washington.

This bill, if passed, would make it illegal for a woman to cross state lines to have an abortion.

I’ve just seen that 21 keybfederal employees in DOGE have resigned en masse.
‘The Associated Press, which first reported on the resignations, said their resignation letter states: “We will not use our skills as technologists to compromise core government systems, jeopardize Americans’ sensitive data, or dismantle critical public services,” adding “We will not lend our expertise to carry out or legitimize DOGE’s actions.”’
A courageous thing to do. Good on them.

Babs03 Tue 25-Feb-25 17:59:20

Great news!!
Hope to hear more if this as time goes by.
Well done those Americans fighting back.
