Shipping them all back en masse at the first hint of a settlement, whether they want to return so soon or not, before the infrastructure is working normally, doesn't seem ideal. They will need accommodation, work and an income, schooling, access to medical services, food supplies and so on, which could all be at a lower level than were present before the conflict.

Yes: if there is an agreed reliable peace then there are millions to be re-settled, this would have to be "bit by bit" - hopefully negotiated by the "willing countries" backing Ukraine.
I dont know what will happen now that the USA has announced it will end visas though.

Alternatively all the UK native curmudgeons who don’t appreciate the benefits of a mixed society could be deported, and we could keep (if they want to stay) the grateful, willing and productive Ukrainians here, to help towards the rebuilding of the UK for future generations.

When my husband came across from Ireland at 5 in 1960 he lived in London and had Jamaican, West Indian and Chinese neighbours.

We are talking about Ukrainian refugees on this thread. Not a place for racist generalisations.

In the schools in the very deprived area I work in, 30 % of primary school children are unable to speak English. Was that your childrens experience? Because it wasnt my childrens experience. But I live in a middle class village. Not hearing what the people in those communities are saying wont help.

My sister worked in a (secondary) school (academy) where that was the case, but there was a programme to fast track the children learning English, and most were fluent within a few months. Is that not the case where you are?

My town has a school for children who arrive with no English. My experience of several primary school aged children who were fleeing war torn Africa was they were quickly able to move into in main stream schools. Possibly areas of high deprivation/comparatively low rents have organised as a result of being used by government for

That so depends where you live, wouldn't you agree. Some areas have very little immigration, some, as our area, but not enough to overwhelm the local population.
As most of the jobs you describe are done by local people here I think you do a great disservice by saying all these jobs are done by immigrants.
The only concern I have, is the sudden influx of Turkish barbers.

Actually, no, I wouldn’t. I live near a rural town in mid Wales, but nonetheless the hospitals, care homes, hotels etc. are largely staffed by immigrants, mainly Eastern Europeans, Filipinos and Indians, who have come over on various schemes to attract people to work in shortage services.

No fast track learning English I am afraid, probably by necessity different at secondary level. I am not sure people quite understand how different the situation is in deprived areas and what that means for those who live there.

My DGD told me that one of the Ukrainian refugees in her class at primary school could speak some English, in particular he knew some very ripe swear words which she repeated to me (with glee).
I did say to her that he'd probably had a very tough time and perhaps could be excused.

Thinking back to learning a language in secondary school, I remember that finding swearwords and anatomical terms in that language was a popular occupation, particularly for the boys (we girls, of course, would not have dreamt of doing so - and if we did have a glance through the dictionary, it was only to translate what the boys were saying )

I remember merdre being rather popular amongst DS and his friends after a French exchange trip.

These Ukrainian children will have to learn Welsh as well as English - double whammy.

Rebuilding of the UK? Surely the Ukrainians should be going back and rebuilding their own war torn country
