Trump dismantling the Education Dept.

I haven’t read anything about this, so I am wondering what this actually means?

In the U.K. it would be a monstrous action, and state education would collapse, but does it have the same implication in USA ?

He is going to give education to each state to manage rather than from central government.

Indigo8 Thu 06-Mar-25 16:20:16

I have read an article about it in Forbes and it seems that some functions would be devolved to other departments and other functions to state, as opposed to federal, responsibility.

Without really knowing anything about educational administration in the USA, I am not sure how drastic a change this would be. Judging from other sweeping changes Trump has made, I have the feeling it will be bad news for quite a few people.

Grandmabatty Thu 06-Mar-25 16:22:22

Except the states won't be given the budget to run education from central government and then other areas will lose out on funding instead. That's his plan

Cossy Thu 06-Mar-25 16:22:29

Another disastrous EO might be signed this week, but apparently to close the department and its function in its entirety would take an act of congress.

It seems another move to keep education solely based on America and nothing else (?? 🤷🏻‍♀️) Seems Trump has no issue with English and Maths, but other subjects, in his opinion, might prove counter productive (?? 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Also what’s he’s doing will affect funding to places of education.

Madness, but no less or more mad than many if his EOs.

So no jobs, no healthcare, no education.

What a wonderful place America will be, Trumpland!

Thanks for replies. I must read up more!

Juggling garden, reading and a bit of spring cleaning.

Garden winning as it is beautiful and windless days we have had all week.

This will be a disaster. The first students affected are those with disabilities. That funding will be stopped.

Rheybare also trying to institute a voucher system where the states give taxpayer their own money back to be spent at private schools. This ends up nearly bankrupting the state's and the for profit private schools increase tuition rates by the same amount of the tax credit. All the while defunding public schools.

This will eventually lead to only the rich being educated.

Surely it must be dawning on all US citizens whose heads contain at least one brain cell that this President is not working for THEM.

He is turning the USA into a divided land of Have-it-alls and the Have-nots, where there is no certainty that working hard at two or three full-time jobs, going to church on Sundays or being law-abiding, not having lots of children, and never wasting time and money on frivolities like travelling abroad or being ill will not prevent you from having permanent membership of the Have-nots party.

I wonder, part to his transgender, diversity, sexist agenda?

“I say it all the time, I’m dying to get back to do this. We will ultimately eliminate the federal Department of Education,” he said in September during a rally in Wisconsin. "We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing,” Trump said.

What like Mr Trump, the truth perhaps?

The problem is that MAGA wants to be the haves.

They are jeering people losing jobs. They are harassing public servants. They are celebrating Ukraines destruction. They are enjoying watching this be torn apart. They will gladly lose out to own "the libs".

It is like a group of toddlers have been unleashed.

Trump isn't well known for his empathy towards anyone with a disability so although it saddens me, it is the measure of him.

This will lead, presumably, to schools being " encouraged" to teach only an "approved" curriculum.
A good start to a successful dictatorship, straight from the songbook of China and Russia.
I take particular offence at people's work being referred to as a swamp.

Casdon Fri 07-Mar-25 08:13:19

I think it’s most likely going to lead to greater polarisation between states. More liberal states will probably not change much, but the bible states will clamp down. I don’t see much difference between that and what Muslim countries do - they could well end up with segregation between boys and girls ultimately.

Those states will still have to find the money to keep the schools open, I wonder how long MAGA supporters will be happy when their children can no longer even get the education they have now.

Sounds too familiar. First you get rid of the intelligencia and those who don’t support your regime.

He is on record for saying that he "loves the uneducated".

growstuff Wed 12-Mar-25 04:26:36

Education in some American states is already a disgrace. I've seen timetables comparing what's on offer in the Mid West and California and New York. Some of the Mid West states have a curriculum which doesn't go beyond what we would consider primary education - which maybe explains a lot. It certainly is a country of "haves" and "have nots".

Not surprising - they voted for him.

It's not just about diversity. The curriculum in some bible belt states is dire. They learn hardly any geography or history and science is primitive, so pupils learn almost nothing about anything outside their own environment. It's the kind of stuff which was taught in the 19th century elementary schools in the UK.

They seem to know nothing even about Canada, their nearest northern neighbour. The indoctrinated are putting lots of facts and statistics about Canada and US-Canada trade on the net, which are contradicted by replies by Canadians (with better spelling and grammar as well as sounding like more factual facts)

The differences between the best and worst educated in the US is quite shocking, especially as the US has been from the beginning a republic and a democracy. Interestingly, a comparison of the French and US constitutions highlights the emphasis on equality in the French constitution, but not the American one.
