. I have been meaning to do this for awhile and have finally deleted the news app on my phone and I’m not watching any news on TV anymore
My mental health has got to come first…
Ignorance is bliss….

My yoga teacher advised us to watch the news only twice a week as there is not much we can do about most of it.
I do watch the news and read it on iPlayer and Reuters so I am a bit of a glutton for news but it doesn't often affect how I feel. I can go off out and forget it

So much of what you see and read in the news seems to be opinion rather than fact. That means you can go down a leafy lane of worry over so many things that never come to fruition or had no basis in fact in the first place.

If you limit your attention to the 'news' it's amazing how much of the rubbish spouted over the course of a week just melts like snow.

lixy Sun 09-Mar-25 17:14:58

Good idea.
Once or twice a week is plenty as so much is rehashed anyway to fill the time I suppose.
Local news is a daily watch for me though.

We have decided to no longer watch the late evening news- and only the early ones. And watch Question Time on catch up, earlier in the day.

The other night, we went out and got back just as the news starting- with that terrible meeting with Zelenski, Trump and Vance. I felt so sick and upset afterwards, and his words were stuck in my head 'you are gambling with WW3'.

Probably quite sensible Shinamae if it’s affecting your well being. Well done you for taking action to mitigate your anxiety.

I must admit I'm getting a bit addicted to the news and it's causing me a lot of tension. On the other hand, we do need to keep ourselves informed about what is happening in the world.
It's the feeling of helplessness which is so frustrating. I wish I could speak directly to Starmer and tell him just what I think of him and the way he is treating the people who voted him into office.

JudyBloom Sun 09-Mar-25 17:46:30

I totally agree Shinamae.

Claremont Sun 09-Mar-25 17:47:09

OK, I'll bite mum2three- never mind the news, reading your comments on here have probably caused me more concern than the news.

If it helps, then well and good.
I do think that rolling news is a mistake, it comes at you at all hours.
I can ignore it but not all can do that and it then breeds anxiety.

The happiest people I know, don’t watch the news, or read the news papers. . Just content with their heads buried in the sand.

Dh is an absolute fiend for news - he often seems to have it on from one source or another all day. We got into the car yesterday (my car!) for a 60 mile drive to a DD’s birthday lunch - he’d already put the radio on so before the car was even moving I said, ‘No, we are NOT having the bloody depressing news all the way!’
(We didn’t.)
On the way back (many hours later) I was too tired to argue about it, though.

JamesandJon33 Sun 09-Mar-25 19:25:37

I too have stopped watching the news…just occasionally I will take a peek. But it is all so worrying, and I feel a bit of a coward, not wanting to know.

fancythat Sun 09-Mar-25 19:38:05

I cut my watching of news down by about two thirds. About 6 months ago.

CanadianGran Sun 09-Mar-25 19:58:38

Oh, I understand! I've been swearing at the TV lately like a longshoreman (I actually am one.) It's been so upsetting, and as a Canadian, very worrisome with what's going on just to the south of us.

While it's important to stay current with what's going on around us, it can be overwhelming at times. I watch noon and early evening news, and look for other sources on line to see their point of view.

Limiting viewing to a few times a week, or even just the evening news would be better for me.

Well at least your battery will last longer by deleting those apps. They sap the power from your devices.
Plus you won’t have zillions of companies etc tracking you.
Win win.

Babs03 Sun 09-Mar-25 20:18:21

Am afraid I also need a break. Is just too depressing and crazy at the moment. Have been getting on with my online scrabble and jigsaws.

For as long as I remember, I’ve started my day about 7am with a cup of tea and the Today programme. The radio 5 phone in as I drive the dogs to the field. M news at one and 6pm then channel 4 at 7pm.
Increasingly I’ve been reducing my exposure to the news. It started with avoiding images and reports from Gaza and continued.
I decided to avoid the news from Trump land then I heard a snippet of the bullying of Zelensky, which resulted in me putting ch4 news on . I was incredulous and the shock has stayed with me.

So many friends and family feel overwhelmed, unable to influence, anxious about world peace with the result they’re cutting back on news

The hubris of the media gets me down. The tv news channels that play loud clashing music as a prelude to the usual gloomy world news. I now find myself saying FO to them all. It doesn't particularly distress me as I have a cynical nature and feel we are informed too much these days and not everything is that important or even truthful. None of it is new; imagine the horror of the world if Genghis Khan had blanket media coverage; we all be shivering jellies of hopelessness.

Sago Mon 10-Mar-25 09:43:58

We are thinking of doing the same, it’s all consuming at the moment.

Luckygirl3 Mon 10-Mar-25 09:46:24

I click on the news on my phone each morning - I skim past Gaza, simply noting that the carnage persists, I skim past all the sport, I look at the politics a bit, and delve into the arts. If there is anything that I feel I need to know more about, I research it. There is only so much misery that one can take, whilst also knowing there is nothing whatsoever you can do about it.

nanna8 Mon 10-Mar-25 11:36:06

Ah well, the AFL season is about to start and that takes up most of the news here. Haven’t heard much about Gaza lately and Ukraine isn’t mentioned that much now, either. It has been mainly about the Queensland cyclone which you do actually need to watch to find out if fam and friends are safe. Europe might as well not exist for all the news we get but they do go on about Trump.

Allira Mon 10-Mar-25 12:24:26

I've been following news of the cyclone online

Otherwise it's lunch-time news if we're in and 10 o'clock news at night.

Agree. I have always taken a keen interest in politics and current affairs but can no longer take the misery in the incessant news feeds.
This is no longer a world I feel safe or happy in.
