. I have been meaning to do this for awhile and have finally deleted the news app on my phone and I’m not watching any news on TV anymore
My mental health has got to come first…
Ignorance is bliss….

I "fasted" from the news for several weeks a couple of years ago and when I put it back on, I was shocked at the relentless negativity of it. So I'm back to watching only short summaries on occasion.

C S Lewis refused to read newspapers which caused much derision from his friends. He told them that he knew they would tell him anything he needed to know. One of those things of course was the war!

That’s good to know. smile

Only been a few days without actively seeking out news but it has really made a difference. I’m so glad I made this decision. 🤗

When at home we do tend to listen to the news. On holiday we never bother at all. I reckon we re both better for it!

GranE

Dictators and tyrants thrive on people turning a blind eye or burying their heads.

So what do you recommend we do?

My Daughter has never been interested in the news. She never watches it or reads it online. Hears anything important or relevant from work colleagues

I watch and listen to a lot of news. I also read a lot of hopefully reliable stuff online.

I find the current world situation fascinating, all the twists and turns. Some of it is astonishingly bad but there are also many positive stories.

It might make us concerned to watch the news but is a damned sight worse for people actually living through it. We should be grateful to have the selfish luxury of switching it off.

And frankly, if we are going to be nuked to smithereens I'd want to know (beforehand, obviously!) who was responsible.

Well, you carry on then….
And I will carry on doing what I’ve decided to do..

I was a proper news hound, as soon as I got out of bed I put the news on and as soon as I got home from work, that’s all stopped now
The one thing I will do is watch question time…

Author Marian Keyes said in a recent interview, she no longer follows the news. She suffers from depression and this is one way to cope.

Best thing I ever did was get rid of the TVs when it went digital. It was almost a total waste of time & money.

Sawsage2 Mon 10-Mar-25 16:15:18

Reading these comments make me worry 😟. I only listen to good news, even regional news is bad.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Mon 10-Mar-25 16:05:53

I stopped watching TV news a while ago. I've always felt you're not told the whole story.

pascal30 Mon 10-Mar-25 15:20:20

I'm a bit of a glutton for Newsnight but I watch in iplayer in the morning.. I don't watch news at night, just something light

AuntieE Mon 10-Mar-25 14:39:48

Each to her own here. I have chosen to listen to, or watch the news once a day - preferably neither just after I get up - I can face the world better after two cups of coffee, nor just before going to bed.

And I chose different news channels, as I find it helps to hear not only my own country's take on the situation, but one or two others as well.

Colls Mon 10-Mar-25 14:13:54

I try hard to only watch news on satire programmes.
I wish HIGNFY was on every week. That would suit me fine!

Kayteetay1 Mon 10-Mar-25 14:12:52

Agree. I have always taken a keen interest in politics and current affairs but can no longer take the misery in the incessant news feeds.
This is no longer a world I feel safe or happy in.

The hubris of the media gets me down. The tv news channels that play loud clashing music as a prelude to the usual gloomy world news. I now find myself saying FO to them all. It doesn't particularly distress me as I have a cynical nature and feel we are informed too much these days and not everything is that important or even truthful. None of it is new; imagine the horror of the world if Genghis Khan had blanket media coverage; we all be shivering jellies of hopelessness.

😲😂

Allira Mon 10-Mar-25 12:24:26

I've been following news of the cyclone online

Otherwise it's lunch-time news if we're in and 10 o'clock news at night.

nanna8 Mon 10-Mar-25 11:36:06

Ah well, the AFL season is about to start and that takes up most of the news here. Haven’t heard much about Gaza lately and Ukraine isn’t mentioned that much now, either. It has been mainly about the Queensland cyclone which you do actually need to watch to find out if fam and friends are safe. Europe might as well not exist for all the news we get but they do go on about Trump.

Luckygirl3 Mon 10-Mar-25 09:46:24

I click on the news on my phone each morning - I skim past Gaza, simply noting that the carnage persists, I skim past all the sport, I look at the politics a bit, and delve into the arts. If there is anything that I feel I need to know more about, I research it. There is only so much misery that one can take, whilst also knowing there is nothing whatsoever you can do about it.

Sago Mon 10-Mar-25 09:43:58

We are thinking of doing the same, it’s all consuming at the moment.

For as long as I remember, I’ve started my day about 7am with a cup of tea and the Today programme. The radio 5 phone in as I drive the dogs to the field. M news at one and 6pm then channel 4 at 7pm.
Increasingly I’ve been reducing my exposure to the news. It started with avoiding images and reports from Gaza and continued.
I decided to avoid the news from Trump land then I heard a snippet of the bullying of Zelensky, which resulted in me putting ch4 news on . I was incredulous and the shock has stayed with me.

So many friends and family feel overwhelmed, unable to influence, anxious about world peace with the result they’re cutting back on news
