I think it shows what our supposed special friends actually think of us, as well as joking about people who woukd be killed and their crass stupidity in not realising a journalist there.
This. I cringe every time I hear a British politician mention 'the special relationship' as I have relatives in America, and I know that if you use the phrase there people look at you in utter bemusement - it means absolutely nothing to them.
Agreed. I don't think there is or ever was a special relationship.
My brother always worked in the US, over 40 years in NYC. He always wondered to their daft thoughts about the war of 1776 and if we care.
They tend to large celebrations for "Independence Day" (the 4th of July), including large quantities of beer (he refers to it as 'water-beer'), huge slabs of beef, corn, crisps, and apple pie.
Invariably, when inviting him, someone would ask if he was insulted? No, why? Because you lost, the 4th of July must be a bad memory. No, it's a day before 5th and a day after 3rd of July, every year, over 200 years ago.
They only want us to keep wars off their shores - simples.
