Marine Le Pen has been given a four year jail sentence for embezzlement. Her sentence will be suspended for two years with the remaining time spent fitted with an electronic bracelet, (probably not Dior)! She has also has been banned from standing at the next election.

Good!

Casdon Mon 31-Mar-25 13:57:50

It sounds like it was a fair cop, as there was apparently clear evidence that she had used public money fraudulently. I think the same thing would happen here in those circumstances.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 31-Mar-25 14:24:47

Farage doesn’t bear too much scrutiny either imo.

AuntieE Mon 31-Mar-25 14:31:57

Nice to hear there are still countries where those convicted of crimes cannot stand in elections!

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 31-Mar-25 14:47:42

Indeed AuntieE.

Hadn't Sarkozy and Chirac both been convicted, of something or other after their tenure? I seem to remember it was reported Sarkozy having to wear one of those ankle things, whilst he served out the rest of his sentence at home.

ronib Mon 31-Mar-25 15:07:32

It may well go to appeal.

That’s no problem though is it? Either there is clear evidence or there isn’t.

Hipfully take away the "suspended" bit.

Wyllow3 Mon 31-Mar-25 15:28:08

Erm..hopefully....

Mamie Mon 31-Mar-25 15:34:49

The prison sentence will go to appeal, but she cannot appeal about the ban on standing in 2027, which is the important bit.

Yes, he might be more careful with his friends and money raisers

According to the BBC news the fraud she has been tried for is fairly common amongst political parties in France.. and her ban from leading the party unheard of.. So France is making it pretty clear that they don't want a far right leader...

I wonder if we can learn any lessons on how to deal with Farage...

Casdon Mon 31-Mar-25 16:15:20

I think it’s usually happened before when a leader is in power or has already left. If it’s is found before they are in power it does make sense to ban them from standing, because if you know they are dishonest on the scale it seems to be, you wouldn’t want them in charge.

I am not sure about the accuracy of the story of other political parties embezzling money from the EU to fund domestic politics. Is that really what is being reported pascal30? I haven't done an exhaustive search of French media, but not seeing it at the moment.

BlueBelle Mon 31-Mar-25 17:28:05

Phew brilliant keep her out the game for a while

love0c Mon 31-Mar-25 17:39:01

To put the cat among the pigeons! It was stated she used money to pay wages. Another party has been accused of the same. However, this party was acquitted. Go figure!! My opinion and I am entitled to it. Well, at the moment I am. I won't be coming back here as there is little point.

Sadgrandma Mon 31-Mar-25 17:50:59

Is there any country that doesn’t have corrupt politicians?
