Stand up to the bully - buy British!

Are you feeling powerless while watching the US president seeking to upset the world order? How about following the approach used to help stop apartheid in 1980s and focus on buying British? One person might not make a difference but if more of us try to implement this, the impact could be significant. It is working for Canada resulting in 4 Republicans in states near the US/Canada border voting against tariffs, in the senate, due to the pleas of their constituents. However it would mean avoiding Cocoa cola, MacDonalds, Amazon among others. Don't be powerless - take action!

I urge Boots customers to cultivate local pharmacies - Walgreen (who own Boots) are in a bad way, as is Boots. I find all the smaller Boots’ shops to have little stock and poor staff, it’s only the massive Boots in shopping malls who have any stock. There are fewer staff in the smaller Boots, and as someone who can’t stand for long, the queues are a no-no.

I didn’t know that Boots had been taken over by Walgreens. A lot of my father’s family in Nottingham worked for them and they were a very good employer back in the day. Many of the tills in our local Boots are self service now, I prefer SuperDrug.

I'm in the US. Please buy from anything but the US.

Do you really think trump is a Bully just because he didn’t let us off .
Why should he ?. He’s President of America he’s looking after his own people putting them first . We have a party in power that falsely got elected they have done nothing else but spout Lies and ruined this Country .
We had industries in the 80s we have Jack nothing now it’s all been sold off …
Wake up do something about the NOW this country is toast …
WHO would trust this Goverment .

Remind me, HarvI who was in power in the 80s. Oh yes, that would be the tories who sold our arse to the highest bedder.

I, certainly, shall be trying harder to avoid buying from the U.S. - can't stand his smug orange face! Can't remember when I last visited MacDonalds, Starbucks, or bought Coke or Pepsi. I'm not interested in owning aa Tesla.
For your interest, do you know what trump is slang for?Literally, a trump is either a playing card with an arbitrary high rank, or a loud blast on a wind-instrument: hence “trumpet”. So in British slang a trump is the sort of fart that makes a loud noise, like a squeaky flute.

I have boycotted Starbucks since I discovered that they suck money out of the UK and pay little tax on the enormous profits they make!

Same here Sueki44. I have deliberately avoided Starbucks for years and would drive or walk much further rather than give it my custom. I do my best to avoid any US produce - but in this global market it can sometimes be very difficult to pin down where something has originated. I do use Amazon, but always buy from UK or European sources - though almost everything seems to be made in China (including my Apple laptop and iPhone - yes US company, but made on China!

I live in the US. Please boycott our exports. If you follow news from the US, you know that Trump's tariffs are simply his Fiasco of the Week. If people in other countries refuse to buy our stuff, he'll back down.

I’ve never bought anything from the ridiculously priced American candy stores, or from the similarly priced confectionery in HMV, but I hope that people who do might stop.

Frenchgalinspain Sat 05-Apr-25 15:41:24

My husband and I predominately purchase Spanish products however, never any from The Usa due to the MSG and toxic additives.

We love worldwide cheeses and during the Christmas / New Year´s Holidays we enjoy preparing Cheese Platters .. However, never cheeses from The Usa.

We never eat in any Usa Fast Food Chains.

It is a true horror what is going on in The Usa.

A crazy unempathetic, cruel and heartless criminal putting tariffs on "Penguin Islands", a felon, and a lunatic to say the least ..

It is a unbelievable !!

Allira Sat 05-Apr-25 15:46:31

It is reported that exports from the UK to the USA will be subject to a 10% tariff but certain products are subject to a higher tariff ie 25%.

One manufacturer of car parts who regularly exports to the USA has just had his order cancelled by the company which regularly buys from him. The parts are all crated ip and ready to go. They're worth £350,000 so his company may now fold, certainly jobs are in jeopardy.

Geordiegirl1 Sat 05-Apr-25 15:59:13

Perhaps boycott Israeli produce and Israeli supporting institutions in this country who help to arm them - and are Insurers of armaments.

You are right Petra Mercedes does have a plant just outside of Tuscaloosa Alabama. I’ve been a resident here for many many many years but that is my hometown and I can assure you that all of the jobs at Mercedes are held by residents there because Mercedes trains folks and they pay well but yes all of the parts come from other countries every single one of them including the seats. Mercedes is pretty much of an assembly plant. I need to understand more about the terrace that have been put on USA goods before a comment because quite frankly I don’t trust anything that Donald Trump does. What he’s done to retirement funds is criminal quite frankly because the majority of professionals who manage those funds are now buying T bills because stocks are extremely volatile and have gone down so much.

I think Mr. Trump is an isolationist and in the world we live in I don’t think that works very well. It’s been so embarrassing the things that he and the vice president have said about other countries and especially about the EU. Shameful!!

I’ve posted about this recently. I’ve no interest in buying a Tesla, but I have an iPhone and an iPad.🙄 I don’t buy from coffee shops. I’ve just heard that Costa (previously Italian/British) is now owned by Coca Cola. I’d like to avoid Amazon unless I’m desperate. I’ve certainly no desire to visit America. I’d prefer to see Canada. 😎 Apparently lots of Canadians are cancelling their US ‘vacations’, i.e. holidays. 👏👏👏

TiggyW Sat 05-Apr-25 16:54:03

Geordiegirl1 - What do we buy from Israel? 🤔 If I knew I’d avoid it. Fruit and veg perhaps?

I don't know why we're making SO much fuss about this. We charge duty on imports. We call it 'VAT' rather than a 'tariff'. But it's the same thing.

I am afraid Amazon is so good at what it does that generally people won't boycott it.

Please use OnBuy, a British ‘Amazon’ type company. When I’m tempted to use Amazon, I look at OnBuy first. Yes, the delivery may take a day or two longer and yes, occasionally my order is fulfilled via Amazon for some reason, but on the whole, OnBuy does a good job.
I recommend. WWW.onbuy.com

No it isn't. Tariffs and VAT are not the same thing. Tariffs are import duties on goods when they first arrive in a country. VAT is a tax on goods and services, applied regardless of origin and applied all the way along the chain to the end consumer.

Allira Sat 05-Apr-25 17:48:26

Yes, we charge tariffs on imports and most countries do too.

What is not clear to me is why has this caused so much economic chaos just now. Trump imposed tariffs last time he was in power; did it cause this chaos last time? Are these tariffs more widespread and stringent?

Biden increased some tariffs Trump had introduced and dropped others.

What is different now?

It has just been on the ITV news that Jaguar Land Rover are halting all exports to USA.

We should be going to USA in October to stay with some of our GC’s other grandparents, we have decided not to go.

Its the scale.

BTW, that article is very interesting as it showed tariffs were not at all the gain/gain hoped for in a number of ways.

It's not tariffs as such, it's the trading deficit, hence the reason countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia etc have such high 'tariffs' imposed by USA, because Americans want to buy cheaper products. Whilst wanting to have more products made in the USA, it will take a number of years to get the manufacturing facilities in place so the American people will be paying more in the interim.
Fortunately I don't eat Macdonald's or drink coca cola, Starbucks etc I will certainly be looking to see where products are grown/canned etc to ensure they're not from the USA . I won't use X/twitter and I won't buy any American products on Amazon.

Allsorts Sat 05-Apr-25 18:28:51

I already try to buy British, not too easy. Trump will be history one day like everyone else. Vance seems a very controlling, cold person, he is as much a problem as Trump.

Asda is 10% owned by Walmart, it was sold to the Issa brothers and TDR Capital in 2021 but retained the 10%

Cadburys is now owned by Mondelez an American company, which has since changed the recipe for Cadburys chocolates, (it is now has a dreadful taste) so boycotting Cadburys chocolate won't be a hardship
